COLLARD, RICHARD LEE 95, of Waterford passed into the presence of Jesus his Savior on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. He was born on January 26, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan to David and Rose (née Tustin) Collard. Beloved husband of the late Beverlee Ann Collard (née Sloan) for 68 years; loving father to Lee Ann Collard of Waterford, Mark (Laurie) Collard of Sterling Heights, Ruth (Patrick) Hanna of Cambridge, Ontario, and Steve (Lydia) Collard of Sterling Heights and the late Kevin (Lorna) Collard of Sterling Heights; proud grandfather to 8 grandchildren, Becky (Chris) Lozano, Nathan (Jennifer) Collard, Gordie (Tammany) Hanna, Julie (Sam) Tovar, Andrew Collard, Derek Collard, Kristi (Dave) Metz, and Alyssa (Ted) Bogar; great grandpa to 8 great grandchildren, James Hanna, Emery and Sawyer Lozano, Henry Collard, Daniel and Jacob Metz, Elizabeth and Rowan Collard; brother of Thomas (Linda) Collard, Jerry Collard, Douglas (Sunny) Collard and the late Ronald (Pat) Collard; brother in law of Elaine (Gerald) Simpson, Charles (Alice) Krause, Kenneth (Donna) Sloan, the late Marilyn Krause, and the late Sharron (Keith) Dunmore; uncle of many nieces and nephews. Richard attended Corunna Bible Chapel and loved the fellowship there. He was known for singing hymns with gusto at full volume and for his love of the Bible and his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is known to hundreds as “Coach Collard” having coached youth sports teams for decades in the Waterford area. He was the athletic director for Waterford Village school. He formed the Waterford Girls Fastpitch league enabling many girls to participate in sports prior to the enactment of Title IX. He volunteered, worked part-time, and coached in Waterford Parks and Recreation for over 30 years. He created the Oakland Merchants Girls Fastpitch Organization. He was honored for his efforts by his induction into the Waterford Township Hall of Honor in 2002 and the American Softball Association Metro-Detroit Hall of Fame in 2006. He graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1947. In his teens he worked in produce at Schmidt’s Market, delivered the Detroit News and ran a newspaper station. He worked full-time until the age of eighty-nine for several companies as the manager of aircraft parts departments, including Detroit Aircraft Supply, Van Dusen, Q Air Parts, Royal Air and Michigan Aviation. The family wishes to thank Tina Fisk for her loving assistance with the care of Dick and Beverlee for many years at their home. We also want to thank all of the staff at dad’s second home, The Village Place Restaurant, for their kindness and service over the years and for hosting his 95th birthday party. Joy Ann King

Joy Ann King, age 76, of Waterford, passed away on February 17th, 2024. Daughter of the late George and Eugenia Wallace. Joy married her late husband, Elvin King, on December 1st, 1973, and spent 32 loving years together. She is survived by her brother George (Lise) Wallace Jr; nephews Brian (Theresa) Trazfer and Bob Trazfer whom she loved very much. She is preceded in death by her favorite sister Linda (Brian) Trafzer. Joy graduated from Waterford Kettering high school in 1965. She loved living in Waterford around all the lakes and participating in events at the Waterford Senior Center. She spent 25 years of her life working for the State of Michigan assisting the disenfranchised and trying to make a difference in their lives. Joy recently became Catholic and a member at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. Father Le Vodivodi of Holy Family Catholic church administered the holy sacraments of healing, reconciliation, confirmation and the Eucharist during her stay in Genesys hospital. Joy shared with us that she experienced great peace, joy and felt truly loved by Jesus and was very grateful to Father Le for bringing her the sacraments and reminding her to never be afraid, Jesus is always right there with each of us. Those of us who were lucky enough to know Joy knew she was a social butterfly who enjoyed attending parties and loved picnics. She also loved wildlife, especially cats and “Roddy” the golden retriever who would visit her while at The Oaks at Woodfield assisted living. Joy had a special place in her heart for her rose garden which was something she would take great pleasure tending to every day. Joy wanted to make sure to thank all the priests, her friends, neighbors and everyone who took care of her, prayed for her, helped her in any way that she was very grateful to them and for them. PHELPS, LAWRENCE L. of Waterford; February 14, 2024; age 73; Beloved husband of the late Karen Phelps; Cherished father of Brandon (Kirsten) Phelps and Bryan (Kristina) Phelps; Loving grandfather of Nickolas, Ryan, Lily, Mikayla, Christian and Brianna; Dear brother of Dave (Barb) Phelps, Carol Spencer, Mary (Paul) Whitener, John (Pam) Phelps and the late Joe (late Maryann) Phelps; also survived by Daisy, his faithful companion. Mr. Phelps was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Waterford and worked for the General Motors Corporation Truck and Bus Division. He served in the National Guard during the Vietnam Era.  Larry was reunited with the love of his life on Valentine's Day.  Everyone who was blessed enough to know him will forever remember his kindness, generosity and gentle nature.  He lived for game nights with his family and friends, watching his grandsons play hockey and his granddaughters on stage.  He had a passion for traveling, playing the guitar, golfing every summer and snowmobiling in the winter.  Brandon and Bryan will forever remember their beloved dad as their coach, their biggest fan and the father they aspired to be.   He will be missed.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, 5481 Dixie Highway, Waterford. Charles “Chuck” John Conlen Jr., age 91, of Waterford, passed away February 10, 2024. He was born on December 1, 1932, in Clifford, Michigan to the late Elsie (nee Voelker) and Charles Conlen Sr. Loving husband of 65 years to Ruth (nee Donahue); father to Cheryl Conlen, the late Craig Conlen, and Chuck (Misiel) Conlen; grandfather to Ryan (Jennifer) Kidwell, Riley Conlen, and Manelle Conlen; great grandfather to Daniel Kidwell, Shawn Kidwell, Emily Kidwell, and Kylie Kidwell; and very dear friend to Tracy (Patti) McBride. He is preceded in death by siblings, Winifred “Peg” and Forest. Chuck proudly retired from the Navy after 20 years having served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars, was a member of Admiral Richard Byrd’s Operation Deep Freeze in the Antarctic, and a team member of the Navy’s national pistol marksman team. Chuck later worked as a Metrologist with General Motors for 30 years. Chuck served as a reserve police officer for the City of Pontiac, was a member of the Governor’s Top 20 pistol marksmen, and was a lifelong member of the 32nd Degree Masons and proud member of the Shriners. Chuck enjoyed spending time with the Honda “Gold Wings” Motorcycle club, making his own barbecue sauce for his famous spareribs, enjoying a good cigar, and loved watching his grandkids play sports. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, 12 p.m. at Coats Funeral Home-Waterford. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
