Anthony Marciano

Age - 88

November 14, 2023

Anthony Francis Marciano, Jr died on Friday, November 10, 2023, and the world is a much smaller and much sadder place without him; for "to know him was to love him. " Tony was born to Anthony and Antoinette Marciano on September 30, 1935 in Mount Vernon, New York, the second of three children; older sister "Chubby" and younger brother Ralph. From an early age, Ton's compassionate and caring nature was revealed in the special care he gave to his epileptic sister and his younger baby brother. Everyone relied on "My Junior" as a source of comfort and support when things were hard. As Tony got older, his natural sports talent emerged as the varsity football ace at Archbishop Stepinac High School, where he played both offense and defense. In 1951 he was recruited by Horace Mann but turned them down because of family commitments and instead transferred to AB Davis HS in Mount Vernon, NY where he cracked three ribs to end his football days. In 1956, Ton enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia where he spent two years as a charm school instructor. Here he honed his lifelong craft of fixing and repairing any machine, skills he later translated to his appliance repair business in Rockland County, NY. In 1958, after discharge from the Army, Tony enrolled in the Naval Reserves, raising a family in upstate NY with his wife Joan and two treasured sons Richard and Todd. And when a tragic car accident claimed the life of Richard, his eldest son, Ton's crisis of faith compelled some major changes to his life. In November 1982, Ton married Arlene Derison, converting to Judaism, and became the father of two young girls, Leslie and Adriene. His addition to the family changed three people's lives and brought an abundance of love and devotion where he won the hearts and minds of these three women. Tony spent the rest of his life bringing love and laughter to those around him. His ever-present whistle and his unique Ton-isms made him a source of overwhelming joy. He was one of the most caring and genuine people who truly thought about, and worried about, everyone he loved. To have his love shine your way was such a special and unique thing. And with Ton, his love was not discriminate, for he brought happiness and comfort to everyone's path he crossed. Tony leaves behind a growing family that will miss him every day. From his son Todd (and Sandy) Marciano, his daughter Leslie (and Tom) Tevlin and his daughter Adriene Pernice; his grandchildren Richard (and Kelsey) Marciano, Adison (and Danielle) Marciano and Bari Pernice (and Zach Griffy). And the latest addition, his fourth great-grandchild, namesake Liam Anthony as well as great-grandchildren Ethan, Liana and Wesley Marciano. Tony chose to be cremated and declined a more formal memorial, instead there will be an intimate gathering in Monroe on Saturday, November 18th from 12P - 5P. Harriet Abrahami, our vibrant and indomitable mother, died on November 1, 2023, after a brief illness. She would have celebrated her 95th birthday on December 24. Born in Brooklyn in 1928, she attended New Utrecht High School, cheered on the Brooklyn Dodgers and developed her formidable organizational and management skills as the Executive Assistant to the President of Israel Bonds during the 1950s. She moved with her young family to New Rochelle, NY in 1970, where she has resided ever since. She brought energy, organization, tenaciousness, kindness and sharp humor to everything she did, including leadership roles and projects for her beloved Bayberry community and for Vernon Plating Works, the company founded by her husband with the help of a loan of much of her savings, as well as in running her own household over the years. Harriet radiated love and warmth toward the people around her, and cherished her family deeply. She is survived by her children, Rachelle and her partner Bill Gordon, and Zev Abraham and his wife Karen; and grandchildren Ethan and Jeremy Abraham and Eli Bel Haj Larbi. Rena Strauch

Rena Strauch

Age - 89

November 2, 2023

We have lost our darling Rena, our family matriarch. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Rena passed away peacefully at home at 89, just a few months shy of her 90th birthday. Cherished wife of Berish "Bob" for 68 years, adored mother of Robert (Laura) and Laurie (David), and grandmother to David, Kimberly (Philip), Carolyn (Gabriel), Alexandra, Matthew, Julia and Jason. Beloved sister to Joseph and Marjorie, Bernard and Missy, Arnold and Chaya, Harvey and Audrey, and Andrew and Ellen. Arriving on February 21, 1934, Rena grew up on the corner of Norfolk and Rivington as the only daughter to Rae and Emil Feuerstein, and a welcome addition to her 3 older and 2 younger brothers. Rena's stories of growing up on the Lower East side with her beautiful family were so vivid that you could almost taste the challah and chicken soup her mother made every Shabbat, and picture her brothers running downstairs to work at their dad's shoe store (Manny's). Rena was a voracious learner and had a lifelong passion for Judaism. She was determined to go to the top Hebrew School, and she enthusiastically skipped her way down to Down Town Talmud Torah every week. Rena was also a skilled piano player and avid musician, and, upon discovering the legendary High School of Music and Art, she knew she had to find a way to attend. She researched how to apply, commuted uptown on her own for an audition, and was thrilled to be accepted. Once there, she wanted to ensure that her two younger brothers would get to have the same wonderful experience and convinced them to attend. In 1955, she graduated from Barnard College, where her studies also included multiple classes at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and she subsequently earned her Master of Arts from Teachers College, Columbia University. Among her many lifelong accomplishments, Rena was also a pioneer in creating the egalitarian alternative services at Beth El Synagogue Center of New Rochelle, NY, where she proudly chanted from the Book of Ruth. Additionally, Rena served as president of Beth El's sisterhood, taught Hebrew for many years, and led a Hebrew book club. Just like her parents, Rena and Bob had a love affair for the ages. They met in their freshman year at Barnard/Columbia University, got pinned in sophomore year, engaged in junior year, and married right after their college graduation. While Bob attended medical school, Rena provided financial support through her teaching career. She was the most dedicated and caring first grade teacher in Harlem, staying after school to make sure that every student reached their reading grade level. One time, when a student was concerned about her mother undergoing surgery, Rena stopped her class to call Bob, a medical student at the time, and was able to provide her student with an update on her mother's condition. Rena provided unwavering support in every way for Bob as he pursued his medical career, and was akin to his chief of staff when he became chairman of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center, single-handedly planning the social agendas and details for major U. S. and international medical conferences. She was a constant presence at Bob's side throughout and an incredible asset to him, never failing to remember the names of Bob's colleagues, their spouses, and their children. On the rare occasion Bob would attend an event on his own, everyone would ask: "Where is Rena?" Throughout the years, Rena was the driving force behind keeping the family traditions and sharing beloved stories. Her memory was crystal clear until the end, and she always relished recounting the fine details of all the important events. She and Bob hosted annual Thanksgivings, Passovers, and Hanukkahs for as many as 80 family members with joy and nachas. Rena's "holiday announcements" at these parties of everyone's achievements delivered to the assembled family were legendary. Nothing made her happier than providing delicious potage and speaking to family, friends, and loved ones. She imparted wisdom and warmth to all who knew her, and her shining optimism was infectious. Rena was truly an Eishet Chayil, and we will love her always. Memorial services will be held at Beth El Synagogue Center, 1324 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY at 10:00 a. m. on Thursday, November 2, 2023.Show more
