Kenneth I. "Irv" Tharp, age 76, passed away at 6:10 AM on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at his residence in Oquawka, Illinois. He was born April 23, 1947 in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Kenneth S. and Eva (Kenney) Tharp. Irv was raised and educated in the New Boston and Keithsburg area schools. On September 11, 1965, he married Elaine Kay Link at the Rosetta Baptist Church and she is surviving. Irv was the owner of Tharp Construction and Tharp Brothers Directional Boring. He retired in 1998. He enjoyed hunting, harvesting coon, deer, elk, bear, and mountain lion, fishing, travel, and had an affinity for collecting BB guns. Irv was a great lover of the outdoors. In his younger days, he traveled to Florida where he was a commercial fisherman. Irv enjoyed his custom built fishing boat, adding to his passion of fishing. More than anything, he loved to eat catfish and smoke his catch. Irv's family stressed that he enjoyed Sunday dinners with his family; kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and there was always enough food to feed anyone that came over. He was a longtime member of the Oquawka Eagles Club. Irv was also a member of the Keithsburg Christian Church. Irv is survived by his wife Kay Tharp of Oquawka, IL, one daughter, Laurie (Randy) Short of Oquawka, IL, two sons, Kenneth (Mary) Tharp of New Boston, IL and Ronard (Darci) Tharp of Kirkwood, IL, grandchildren; Abby, Randie Lynn, Roxanne, Erica, Mallory, and Miranda, and his great-grandchildren; Bella, Rileigh, Reyna, Renlee, Braylee, Cooper, and Hank. He is also survived by one sister, Doris Whitesell of Rock Island, IL, and one brother, Roger (Linda) Tharp of Aledo, IL. Irv is preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Dorothy Harader, Ester Gibbs, Mary Gilmore, and Martha Stewart, and brothers; Lyle, Jim, Frank, and Marvin Tharp. A funeral service for Mr. Tharp is planned for 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at the Keithsburg Christian Church in Keithsburg, Illinois. His family plans to receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM prior to the service at the Church. Interment will follow at Greenmound Cemetery in Keithsburg, Illinois. Menu Floyd Leon Utsinger, age 85, of Belle Plaine, formerly of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at his home, where he was under hospice care with Care Initiative. The family will hold a Celebration of Life Gathering at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements. Floyd "Leon" Utsinger was born October 23, 1938 in DeKalb, Illinois, the son to Floyd R. Utsinger and Mary VanWinkle Utsinger. He attended Aledo High School in Illinois, graduating in 1956. He furthered his education at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. On November 6, 1977, Leon and Linda Koenig were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo. He was employed with John Deere in Moline as a manufacturing engineer, working 30 years, and retiring at the age of 47. Following retirement, Leon stayed busy building houses and additions. He enjoyed woodworking and creating yard art using old implement parts. The couple enjoyed snowmobiling together with their friends for over 25 years. Leon being mechanically inclined, did most of the maintenance on the snowmobiles. He owned his own plane, a Cesna 150, and loved time in the sky. Boating on the Mississippi was also a favorite activity for Leon and Linda. Leon is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Linda; three daughters, Bobbi Thomsen and husband Rick of Orion, Illinois, Terri Siegel and husband Mike of Vero Beach, Florida, and Jill Osowski and husband Mark, also of Vero Beach. He leaves behind six grandchildren, Brandon and Bryce Thomsen, Damon Wigant, Mitchell Pawli, and Kayla and Andrew Osowski, and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Don Utsinger and wife Dianne of Sarasota, Florida, and a sister Carol Hagan of Cary, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents. Kathryn S. "Kathy" Hopkins, age 73, of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 8:05 PM on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at her residence. She was born September 28, 1950 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Lean and Pauline Rae (Rhoades) Russell. She was raised in the Gladstone area, attending Gladstone grade school. She attended and graduated from Union High School with the Class of 1968. On January 17, 1970, Kathy married Thomas "Pat" Hopkins in Gladstone, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on November 24, 2021. Kathy began work as a teachers aide at the Gladstone Grade School and later worked at Ferruzzi Grain Elevator in Gulfport. Kathy last worked as a supervisor at General Electric in Burlington, Iowa from which she retired in 2012. Kathy enjoyed gardening, reading, the morning cup of coffee in her garage, and eating at Applebee's. Mostly, she loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her pet cats. Kathy is survived by her mother Pauline Russell of Burlington, IA, two daughters, Tracy Hopkins of Galesburg, IL and Jody Hopkins of Oquawka, IL, one son, Daniel (Melissa) Hopkins of Burlington, IA, one sister, Ann Russell of Burlington, IA, and one brother, John Russell of Burlington, IA. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Kelsey Gilmour, Kole (Makayla) Gilmour, Dylan Hill, and Natalya Hopkins, and her great-grandchildren; Aubree, Jaelynn, Jaxson, Jayse, Kashton, and Kameron Gilmour. She is preceded in death by her father, husband, and one brother, David Russell. As were her wishes, cremation is being accorded. Robert "Bob" Hand, 68, of Oquawka, Illinois, died Monday, October 16, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington. Born October 11, 1955, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Edward and Maxine (Zippe) Hand. He married Fay Adams on September 17, 1977. They later divorced. Bob was a pipefitter for Local #25 of Rock Island, Illinois for 40 years. He enjoyed his birds and dogs and loved taking motorcycle rides and nature walks. He was a true outdoorsman. He was an amateur Ham Radio enthusiast who was fluent in morse code. Bob is survived by his two children; David (Rhonna) Hand and Jennifer (Evan) Hand both of Oquawka; three grandchildren, Ethan (Anahi) Hand, Alicen Hand and Riley Hand; great granddaughter Maya Hand; his two American Bulldogs, Jax and Brody; his stepmother, Barbara Hand of Burlington; his siblings, Steve Hand, Susan Carper and Becky Heiniger; step siblings, Linda Ellis, Jim Howard, Sandy Steele and Sally Miller; half-siblings. John Hand and Julie Conrad and special friend Kathy Monshower of Thompson, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ed Hand and special friend Eve Cochran. Barbra Jane Dunbar passed away on September 20, 2023 in Oquawka, Illinois. Barbra is survived by her mother, Pamela Dunbar, Oquawka, IL; a brother, Patrick (Marissa Keistler) Dunbar, Peoria, Illinois; two adopted sisters, Sonya (Shannon) Smithson, Chillicothe, IL and Deborah (Wesley) Talley, Monmouth, IL; one daughter, Caleigh Martz and one son, Bentlee Talley; an adopted daughter, Adison Rowland and many other bonus children. Also, one nephew, Brendan Dunbar, Peoria and a niece, Katie (Cameron) Velasquez, Monmouth; one adopted nephew, Isaac Talley; two aunts, Cris Dunbar, Cameron, IL, Lisa McDorman, Cameron, IL; a cousin Marshall McDorman, Chicago; one great niece, Everly and great nephew, Ezra; and many, many great aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Howard and Patricia Dunbar. Barbra loved her children first of all. Furthermore, she loved fishing, hunting and crafting. Additionally, she enjoyed the Knox County Scenic Drive every year for the last 34 years; going to Demo Derbys and watching the Dallas Cowboys and the St. Louis Cardinals games. Win or lose she was their biggest fan. She also loved animals of all kinds, and always wanted a big farm with a lot of animals. Barbra loved country music, old country and new country. Garth brooks was her favorite however, she also loved to listen to Johnny Cash and Lorretta Lynn. Her favorite Jonny Cash Song was: "One Piece at a Time" and her favorite Lorretta Lynn song was "Your Looking at Country". Her favorite Movies were the "Fast and Furious", "Nightmare before Christmas," "Twister" and "Beetle Juice". Barbra graduated from United High School, Monmouth, IL, the class of 2005. She worked as a receiving clerk for Farm King in Monmouth, IL and then, worked for Country Market in Monmouth, IL. She never met a person she didn’t like and always had a kind word and a smile for everyone. Memorials Services will be held at the Cameron Christian Church on Saturday, Sept. 30th 2023 at 2:00 P. M. Arlan R. Fox, age 76, of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 9:19 AM on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at his residence. He was born June 30, 1947 in Wheatland, Iowa, the son of Lester R. and Ella L. (Schnack) Fox. Arlan attended schools in Wheatland, and was a graduate of Wheatland High School with the Class of 1965. On May 6, 1965, he married the love of his life, Bobbie (Roberta) Snyder in Rock Island, Illinois and she is surviving. They were often teased about never being apart, always together, and that is what they both wanted and enjoyed. Arlan proudly served his Country in the United State Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was with the 1st Air Calvary/2/8 Recon Division, from which he received various medals including the Bronze Star with the V device. Arlan also spent time during his deployment in Cambodia. That part of his life was a "game changer" in his own words. Arlan always said "God, Family, and Friends is what matters, because there is no tomorrow. " Arlan worked for J. I. Case Company for thirty-six years, retiring from there in 2001. He liked antiques, collectables, and anything that brought back memories of his childhood. This history behind these items is what inspired his crazy habit. He and Bobbie collected, bought, sold, and set-up at shows and traveled that Country looking for more items. The friends made in this hobby was one of the driving forces to keep traveling. Arlan is survived by his wife Bobbie of Oquawka, Illinois, three daughters; Dawn Fox of Quincy, ILMelissa (Tony) Fox of Gladstone, IL, and Sonya (Norm) Fox of Des Moines, IA, two sons; Todd (Val) Fox of Davenport, IA and David (Nancy) Fox of Hagerstown, MD. He is also survived by six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relative. Arlan is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carolyn. A funeral service for Arlan Fox will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 28, 2023 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois.
