Kenneth Durrough Obituary

Age - 88
September 12, 2023
Carrollton, GA
Kenneth "Clyde" Durrough, affectionately known as Papa, of Carrollton, GA passed away peacefully at his home on September 5, 2023. He was reunited with the love of his life, Martha, for eternity. Born June 9, 1935 in Coweta County, GA, Clyde was a cherished child of six born to the late George and Ila Durrough. He was also preceded in death by his wife Martha Shinn Durrough, siblings, Linni, Lindy, and Milford Durrough and Ruby Horsley. From his earliest years, you could find Clyde singing, writing songs, and mastering playing multiple instruments. He made playing the guitar, mandolin, steel guitar, and piano seem effortless. His heart belonged to music, nights out singing in the band with his brother Charles, riding around town with his buddy Delmar Shoemake, gardening, and John Wayne films. Eventually his journey as an "ole bachelor" would lead him to meet his wife. She drove from Carrollton to Newnan one night to hear his band play. She later agreed to go out with him because she thought he would be fun. At the time she was a devoted single mother to Steve Lee who would later become Clyde's one and only child. He loved him fiercely as if he were his own son. On June 10, 1966, after Steve graduated from high school, they were married. They spent the next 57 years of their lives making memories and laughing together. She would become his greatest love. He never quit singing or playing guitar with the band. We spent many weekends listening to him sing to his family and friends with a humor for which he was always known. In 2001, he was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame. He was our favorite cowboy and his brother Charles would argue that he was the best country singer to come out of Coweta County. Clyde was a Worshipful Master Mason at Carroll Lodge # 69 for more than 50 years. He served in the National Guard in his early years and was retired from Douglas & Lomason Co. He is survived by his son, Steve and wife Pamela Lee, brother Charles and wife Mary Ann Durrough and multiple nieces and nephews. He was affectionately called Papa and loved endlessly by Debbie McCort, Stephen Gillis, Laurel Runels, Brittany (Corey) Hyde, Kyler and Averi Roller, Hayden and Emerson Hyde who loved and cared for him as a grandparent. He was also loved by life long family friend, Bonnie Caine. He cherished every moment spent with family and friends, filling their lives with love, laughter, music and wisdom. His legacy will live on through the values he instilled in all he knew. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to family friends Debbie McCort, Stephen Gillis, Carol Johnson and Hospice nurses who cared for him during his final days. Memorial service will be held at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Saturday, October 14th at noon. His dear friend Rev. Mike Harris will be officiating. Messages of condolences may be expressed to the family online at www. almonfuneralhome. com. Almon Funeral Home of Carrollton has charge of arrangements.
