Mildred J. Birzer, 95, of Ellinwood, Kansas, passed away October 28, 2023, at the Ellinwood District Hospital. She was born June 20, 1928, in Erie, Kansas, the daughter of James Leo and Leila Pearl (Inman) Norris. Mildred was a longtime Ellinwood resident, formerly of Walnut, Kansas. She graduated from Walnut High School with the class of 1946. Mildred was a homemaker and worked for Thill Printing in Great Bend for 12 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society, and former member of the Supper Skippers Bowling League. Mildred was an avid bridge player and enjoyed watching Kansas Jayhawk basketball and the Kansas City Royals. On May 20, 1952, Mildred was united in marriage with Jerome J. Birzer at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, north of Ellinwood. He preceded her in death on June 13, 2008. She is also preceded in death by her parents; son, Tony Birzer; six brothers, Ken Norris, Bernard Norris, Bill Norris, Charles Norris, Raymond Norris, and Harold Norris; and two sisters, Loretta Guy, and Lorraine Westhoff. Mildred is survived by her three sons, Tim Birzer and wife Donetta of Lyons, KS, Steve Birzer and wife Janice of Ellinwood, KS, and Marvin Birzer and wife Belita of Felton, DE; two daughters, Kathy Hertel and husband Glen of Ellinwood, KS, and Bernie Rahe and husband Greg of Lawrence, KS; daughter-in-law, Betty Birzer of Ottawa, KS; fifteen grandchildren, Jennifer Birzer, Jaime Birzer, Joe Birzer, Sarah Birzer, Ryan Birzer, Cole Birzer, Kelsey Yeakley, Connor Birzer, Eli Birzer, Jesse Wahlmeier, Jill Suchy, Jason Wahlmeier, Lyndsae Schoenthaler, Dan Rahe, and Megan Rahe; and sixteen great-grandchildren, Landen Birzer, Gunner Birzer, Caleb Birzer, Clair Birzer, Carson Birzer, Brock Yeakley, Baya Yeakley, Kaylin Wahlmeier, Keaton Wahlmeier, Coltyn Suchy, Atley Suchy, Josey Schoenthaler, Canon Schoenthaler, Luke Schoenthaler, Baby Wahlmeier, Nathan Rahe, and Caroline Rahe. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A. M. , Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellinwood, with Father Terrance Klein officiating. Burial will follow at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, north of Ellinwood. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 8:00 P. M. , Monday, October 30, 2023, with Altar Society Rosary at 3:00 and a Parish vigil will be held at 7:00 P. Ricky James "Rick" Phelps, 62, peacefully passed away on August 15, 2023, at his home in rural Ellinwood, Kansas. He was born on June 30, 1961, in Great Bend, Kansas, to James and Eunice (Williams) Phelps. On June 7, 1997, he married Kathryn "Kathye" Ramsey in Pawnee Rock, Kansas. She survives. A lifetime resident of Barton County, Rick was the owner/operator of Dogwood Tree Service. Rick was a dedicated follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend, NRA, and former member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. He was a gun enthusiast, coin collector, enjoyed horses and mules, but especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Devin (Kate) Ramsey, Keylin (significant other, Shaelee) Phelps, and Brevan Phelps, all of Great Bend; three daughters, Amanda (Jeremy) King of Pratt, Madilyn Phelps of Salina, and Isabella Phelps of Ellinwood; five grandchildren with two more on the way, Dylan, Ryan, Lauren, Renly and Aryiah; his mother, Eunice Lane of Hoisington; and two brothers, Damon (Brenda Roat) Phelps of Hoisington, and Jimmy (Laurie) Krebs of Newark, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, James; and a son, Brandon Lee Phelps. Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p. m. , Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p. m. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p. m. He was born on March 6, 1948, to Eugene & Okla (Dixon) Addington, in Independence, Kan. A long-time area resident, Jimmy was an electrician for C&P Electric and M&M Line Construction. He enjoyed carpentry and remodeling trailer houses. Jimmy loved music and collected many albums throughout the years. He enjoyed helping his family and friends but especially loved family gatherings. Survivors include, his sister, Mary Rose Lauber of Great Bend; many nieces and nephews, including, Anneda Mossberg (Shawn) of Ellinwood, Raven Hamit (David) of Great Bend, Tommy Drewel (Kristi) of Great Bend, Kenneth Rowe of Ellinwood, Larry Lauber (Jayda) of Great Bend, Charles Rowe of Great Bend, William Rowe of Great Bend and Jason Lauber of Lyons. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bobby Addington; and two sisters, Rossie Lauber and Marie Drewel.
