He was born on May 23, 1947, to the late George Robert Smith, Sr. , and Edith Sumner Smith in the mountain town of Bat Cave, NC. Bob's journey through life was marked by countless memories, achievements, and the love he shared with his family. Bob had an extensive career, most notably as a partner at Mortgage Lenders of America until his retirement and the sale of his business to Zillow. He proudly served in the United States Army, and was a man of immense integrity, blessed with a sharp intellect and a commanding presence. His wit, often dry, yet incredibly clever, always brought joy and laughter to those around him. One could often find him showcasing his exceptional golfing skills at Thornblade Club, where he mastered the sport he loved. You could find him hitting birdies and making memories every Saturday with his golfing buddies. If there was a tournament, his competitive nature never failed, as he worked towards aces at every hole. Not only did Bob have a remarkable talent for golf, but he also possessed a deep appreciation for beauty and nature. His meticulous attention to detail was showcased in the breathtaking landscape of his backyard, which featured a serene tea house, two tranquil koi ponds, a fire pit, and a variety of beautiful trees and flowers, with decor that states "nature is the art of God. " It was a place of solace and peace, and a reflection of his creativity, taking over a decade to complete. Bob's discerning palate held a particular fondness for an exquisite Napa Cab. With a glass in hand, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, savoring every moment and creating lasting memories with his cherished family. He was a loving husband to his devoted wife, Susan "Susie" Smith, and a dedicated father to his daughters Jennifer "Jeni" Smith Traynham and Ashley Smith, and their respective husbands, Ruston Traynham and James Keiner. His love was amplified through his grandchildren, Jacob and Mary Layne Traynham, and Madelyn Keiner, who called him "Grand Bobby. " Sisters, Barbara Wingate and Nancy Couick, along with many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and family members, will forever treasure the time spent with Bob. His legacy of love, compassion, and strength will continue to inspire all who knew him. To honor and celebrate Bob's remarkable life, a memorial service is to be held on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at 2:00 p. m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown Chapel.
