Winthrop, MA

Kathryn (Mulkern) Wallace of Winthrop passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on September 9, 2023, at the age of 69. She was surrounded by her loving family. Kathy faced her illness like she lived her entire life: courageously, without complaint, and with an unwavering positive spirit. Kathy is survived by her devoted husband and best friend, Stephen, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage and 51 years of adventures. She was the most beloved and proudest mother of Elizabeth and her husband Allan Smith, Annie and her husband Will Dunne, Joseph Wallace, and Julia and her husband Pat Fullerton. Nana was an adoring grandmother to Wally Dunne, Mae Smith, and Tommy Dunne. Kath was survived by her dear younger siblings, Mary Ellis and her husband Al, Maureen Mulkern Lojko, Trisha Tabbut and her husband Jim, and Jimmy Mulkern and his wife Juko. Kathy leaves behind a loving pack of friends, including Kim Geraci and The Girls, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kathy was greeted in heaven with a hot pot of coffee by her parents Ed and Julia (Voke) Mulkern, her in-laws Arthur and Ginny (Morris) Wallace, her brothers Eddie, David, and John Mulkern, and many other beloved family members and friends. A 1975 graduate of Salem State College, Mrs. Wallace went on to become a lifelong educator, molding the minds and shaping the behavior of hundreds of elementary school children at several schools, including Our Lady of Grace (Everett) in the 1970s, the Dalrymple Elementary School (Winthrop) in the 1990s, and her alma mater, St. Rose School (Chelsea), where she spent the last two decades of her career before retiring in 2020. Kathy spread her dry wit and quiet humor on adventures spanning from the top of the European Alps to the white sand beaches of Grand Cayman with Stephen and the rest of her family. You could typically find Kathy on her front porch with a cup of coffee, Sudoku, iPad and/or a good book watching the world go by. A lover of all things peach and plaid, she looked forward to traveling the world with Stephen, steak dinners with The Girls, turtleneck weather, Pizza Fridays, game nights with her siblings, and spending time with her greatest joys: Walla Walla, Mae Mae, and Tom Tom. Kathy will be deeply missed, but her memory and generous spirit will live strong with all who loved her. Kathy and her family are eternally grateful for the exemplary love and care of Dr. Denis Balaban and the rest of the neurology team at Massachusetts General Hospital; Paula Brousseau and Annette Costa of Boston Home Infusions; Sarah Koontz of Mass General Brigham Home-Based Palliative Care Team; and Molly Kelley and the rest of the Care Dimensions team. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the funeral home on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 9:00 AM followed by a funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church 3420 Winthrop St. , Winthrop at 10:00 AM.
