Kathleen Hughes of Mahanoy City passed away Sunday September 10th at Schuylkill Center in Pottsville. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Anna (Reing) Long and a brother Robert Long. She is survived by a sister Mary Lou Rushanan of Frackville, two sons Richard Hughes and his wife Angela of Barnesville and John Hughes of Frackville, grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews . Catherine Mary Sema, age 86, of Mahanoy City, passed away peacefully Monday morning at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born at the former Locust Mountain Hospital she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. & Catherine (Derrish) Moore. She was a 1955 graduate of Mahanoy City High School and a 1958 graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Trenton NJ and worked as a nurse for 40 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in Mahanoy City and the Woman's Guild of the Church. She was a member of the Catholic Nurses Association. Catherine was an avid Phillies fan. She took pride in caring for her home and family. Her favorite pastimes were reading and baking especially her mother's pumpkin pie. She is survived by her husband of 64 years Michael. Children: Kathleen Wettstein, Michael Sema and his wife Tammy and Judith Illingworth and her husband John, a brother Thomas J. Moore a niece Danielle M. Moore and 8 grandchildren , 3 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews through marriage. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by the Rev. Kevin P. Gallagher on Thursday morning at 11 AM from St. Teresa of Calcutta Church. Interment will follow at Sky View Memorial Park in Hometown. Friends may call at the church on Thursday morning beginning at 9:30 AM. Richard Peter Scherer, age 69, of Mahanoy City, died on Sunday morning. Born at the Ashland Hospital on July 9, 1953, he was the son of the late Charles "Pinky" Scherer and Eleanor Hansbury Scherer of Mahanoy Plane. He was a 1971 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School and the Schuylkill County Vocational Technical School. He was employed in sales for various agencies, the most recent being Baltimore Life Insurance. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Mahanoy City, and served as a trustee. He enjoyed volunteering his time for church fundraisers and social events. Richard devoted his time to the Mahanoy Area School Board for several years. He also played an integral role with the Mahanoy Area Alumni Association. You could always find Richard and his late wife, Janet, attending their daughters' school events. It was their greatest joy and they served on many of the Mahanoy Area Boosters Organizations together. Richard loved spending each summer in Ocean City, New Jersey with his family. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Janet E. Scherer and a brother Charles Scherer. Richard is survived by two daughters, Amy Scherer of Elizabethtown and Laurie Scherer of Hummelstown; a sister Kathleen Lawrence and her husband James of Lancaster; a brother Michael Scherer and his wife Christine of Lancaster; a sister Margaret Ellen Aldahonda and her husband Carlos of Lancaster; a brother Kevin Scherer of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; a sister-in-law Maggie Scherer of Frackville, his best friends Keith and Debbie Northey of Mahanoy City; a mother-in-law Joan E. Brady of Mahanoy City; a sister-in-law Joan K. Brady of Pottsville; a brother-in-law John Brady and his wife Theresa of Cary, N. C. ; many cherished nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Bailey. Richard's laughter was everybody else's medicine. He will be always be remembered for his humor, smile and contagious laugh. He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Please celebrate Rich with a loud, "E-A-G-L-E-S, Eagles!" Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral on Saturday morning at 11 AM from the First United Methodist Church in Mahanoy City. The Rev. Bridget Wagner will officiate. Interment will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery in Mahanoy Township. Friends may call at the church on Saturday morning beginning at 9 AM.
