Katherine StiliadesSeptember 22, 1927 - June 3, 2023Resident of Walnut Creek, CaliforniaKatherine (Kay) at 95 years old, passed away peacefully on June 3rd, in Walnut Creek, California. Devoted and loving wife to Solon (Sal) Stiliades for 53 years, until his passing in 2002. She leaves behind her adored daughter & son-in-Law, Joanne & George Booras, grandchildren, Alexander (Jodie) and Anthie. Survived by her sister-in-law Despina Peppas, and many nieces and nephews. Kay started her career as an underwriter for Liberty Mutual Insurance. She moved on to be a Real Estate agent, listing and selling properties in the Bay Area. Kay & Sal loved to remodel homes and build apartment buildings. In her spare time, Kay loved to keep herself knowledgeable with current affairs by reading and watching CNN and FOX news. Kay was a member of the Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland, Ladies Ascension Philoptochos, Daughters of Penelope, East Moline Club, and the Pan Macedonian Association of SF. Kay enjoyed attending Bible study on Tuesdays and helping with the Senior events, and cooking and selling Greek deserts at the Macedonian Easter and St Demetrios picnics. She also volunteered for many years at Samuel Merritt Hospital in Oakland. Her most cherished memories were made during her yearly vacation with Sal, and her sister and brother-in-law Helen & Jerry Vrionis spending time at the Whaler Kaanapali Beach Maui Condos, South Lake Tahoe and Pinecrest. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 13th, 10:30 am, at the Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 4700 Lincoln Ave, Oakland. Interment at Oakmont Memorial Park, 2099 Reliez Valley Road, Lafayette. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made in her name to the Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral Maintenance Fund. Nick Bang's enthusiasm for life was contagious. He wanted everyone he loved to be genuinely happy. Nick was born in Oakland, California, on February 27th, 1987 to Gordon "Andy" and Margaret Bang. His sister Christina was 3 and his brother Michael was 17 months old. His family moved from Alameda to Moraga when he was a year old. Nick's brother Patrick was born 3 years later --their family now complete!Nick's childhood was a happy one - constantly moving, busy playing backyard games of hide and seek with his three siblings and gathering with local family and cousins for every holiday. Nick's family went camping most summers and enjoyed the Lair of the Bear family camp each June from 1991-2001. Family trips included Florida, Disneyworld, the Bahamas, Alaska, and Las Vegas where Nick was always "up to something" fun, risky and always exciting! Winters brought vacations to Tahoe where Nick excelled on the slopes as a skier and snowboarder!Nick was a natural athlete. He played every team and individual sport - soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, swimming, football, wrestling, skateboarding, track and field, cross country, lacrosse, volleyball, skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, hiking, running, yoga and weightlifting!Nick was a boy scout in Troop 212, and he received his Eagle Scout award in May, 2004 and his Eagle project is still being used by MVPC Nurtury today. Nick was never an amateur for long when it came to hobbies he enjoyed. He was a skilled juggler and yo-yoer at a very young age, excelled in sports and games, and when we picked up a new craft, he would study it to mastery. This inclination toward mastery laid the path to his admirable career teaching music. Music came naturally to Nick. Growing up in a family of musicians, Nick forged his own path in vocal music. After joining the choir in high school Nick graduated from Campolindo High School in 2006 and completed a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Performance from California State University East Bay in 2012. Nick established his own business teaching music after college graduation. He was quickly hired by Campolindo Choir as a Vocal Coach, working with the Men's Chorus. He also worked with the SF Young Women's Chorus, taught at Music N Beyond and performed with Festival Opera. His passion for teaching also led him to teach Music Together, where he guided classes for parents with young children. His strong musical foundation made learning new instruments easy for Nick. In his thirties, having mostly studied voice and piano, Nick quickly picked up ukulele, mandolin, and guitar. Ostensibly for use as aids in his classes, he soon mastered the instruments and developed a personal performance style that combined his various expertise into a unique musical experience. Nicholas is survived by his loving parents Margaret and Andy, his three siblings Christina, Michael and Patrick and their spouses, Colby, Faryn and Karin, and his three young nephews Michael, Jonathan and Malakai. Curtis Val Winkel passed away November 3rd at the age of 64 in Castro Valley. Curtis was born to Carolyn Winkel (Matthias) and Val Winkel on February 7, 1959 at Peralta Hospital in Oakland. He was born with severe mental and physical disabilities that set the course for his life. He was predeceased in death by his mother and father, Carolyn and Robert Matthias and biological father, Val Winkel. He is survived by his brother, Glenn. Despite his disabilities, Curtis was a very happy child. He enjoyed many of the same activities as other children especially swimming. Curtis was raised by his single mother, Carolyn, and lived with her in Orinda until 1971. Curtis' need for care along with his size and strength made home care no longer possible. Curtis moved to the Good Sheppard Lutheran Home in Terra Bella, CA on 5/1/1971. Curtis received excellent care at Good Sheppard. In 1989 he was moved to the Sonoma Developmental Center to better handle the increasing level of care that he needed. Curtis thrived in Sonoma and was one of the last clients to live there prior to it being shut down in 2018. Curtis moved to a group home in October 2018 administered by the Region Center of the East Bay. He received excellent care in this facility. All that have familiarity with Curtis' history are thankful and grateful for kind and professional care Curtis received during the course of his life. Charles Edward Stewart Patrick passed away on October 19 at the age of 85 in Walnut Creek, California. Stewart, as he was known to friends and family, was born to William Leonard Patrick and Josephine Mary Patrick, and grew up in the town of St. Helens in Lancashire, England, where William worked as a research chemist involved in the war effort. After graduating from the Oundle School, Stewart served in the 37th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the British Army Royal Artillery from 1956-58, stationed in Malta. While there, he played rugby for the regiment and acted in a modern army dress version of Shakespeare's "Henry V. "Stewart earned a BA and MA in natural sciences from Cambridge University, where he rowed in the 1959 Trinity College rugby boat. After working at ICI as an industrial engineer for several years, he crossed the Atlantic to earn his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Stewart spent several years working for McKinsey & Co. in New York and then London, eventually returning to the United States and becoming a U. S. citizen. He lived for many years in Rye, New York, working with McKinsey, then Continental Can Co. and finally PepsiCo. In the 90's, he moved to Philadelphia to be Compensation and Benefits Director at Cigna Corporation, and subsequently at the St. Gobain Corporation, from which he retired in 2005. Outside of work, Stewart was an active participant in the British Officers Club and the Honorable Artillery Company. Stewart had a lifelong love of music. While living in Pennsylvania he joined the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church choir, and after he and his wife Elenita ("Leny") Bader-Patrick moved to Walnut Creek, California, in 2012, he joined the Livermore Choir and served on their Board of Directors. He also participated in numerous barbershop quartet competitions, and traveled to many countries with Leny, making friends and tasting new wines along the way. If a chorus of "Happy Birthday" broke out near Stewart, he couldn't resist joining in and adding the bass line. Stewart is survived by his wife, his sons Nicholas and Rupert and their wives Rossana and Sara, stepdaughters Christine and Caroline, grandchildren William, Cecilia, Cameron, Charlie, Alex, Claire, Alexander, and Madelyn, and by his younger sister Julia and former wife Gilly.Show more

Jeannette passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on October 16th at her beloved care home, Brookdale Senior Living in Danville, Ca. The second oldest of eight children, Jeannette was born to Peter Medora and Marie Therese LeBesque in Chicago, Illinois. Jeannette was an accomplished operatic soprano at an early age. This talent took her to traveling to parts of the US where she performed for many audiences in Illinois, New York and Texas. In her late twenties, she moved to San Francisco where her Uncle Chris LeBesque and grandmother Marcelle lived. She eventually settled in San Francisco's North Beach district and was introduced to her future husband, Jack Garaventa who was a good friend of her Uncle Chris. They were married for 20 years and had one child, Robert. She enjoyed living on Russian Hill and taking the cable car to shop downtown. Although, Calabrese Italian/French by heritage, "Lala" Jeannette became an expert cook whipping up great Northern Italian Genovese dishes and continually learned new recipes from her mother-in-law Adele and the Garaventa families during summer weekend gateways to Novato and Concord. Jeannette rekindled her love of singing and incorporated learning songs of her French heritage in 1971. She enrolled in the Alliance Franciase in San Francisco to increase her mastery of the French language and became a choir member at Notre Dame des Victoires. It was during this time she met Jean Guy Duport who was an accomplished local singer of French songs who performed regularly for the Bay Area French Community. They eventually married and became a well known French duo known as "Jeannette et Guy". She and Guy performed regularly in the mid 1970s at the Fairmont Hotel's April in Paris engagement and all French fraternal organizations like Ligue Henri IV and Les Faneurs among other groups. They settled in San Ramon in 1985 and performed for many years as a team until Guy's passing in 2009. After retiring from Equifax Corp in 1992, Jeannette spent her later years as a doting grandma to her three grandchildren and enjoyed her friends, various women's clubs and casino trips. In 2018, she moved to the Brookdale Senior Living facility in Danville where she met her loving companion, the late Sonny Vinet. They spent all their time together enjoying the group outings and each other families' events until his passing in October, 2022. Jeannette was predeceased by her husband Jean Guy Duport, her brothers, Albert, Joseph and Eddy, sisters, Marcelle, Martess ,Telou, Maya, stepson Jacques Duport , stepdaughter Jeannette Cornu and former spouse, Jack Garaventa. She is survived by her son, Robert Garaventa (Lynette) stepson, Michel Duport (Carole), grandchildren, Lynn Giannini (David), John Garaventa (Brittany), Michael Garaventa (Lauren), great grandchildren, Charlotte and Richard Giannini, Gianna Garaventa and many relatives in the extended Medora, Garaventa and blended Duport families. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 10:30 AM at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 440 La Gonda Way in Danville, Ca. Luncheon to follow at St. Isidore's reception hall. A special thank you goes out to all her loving caregivers at Brookdale Senior Living and Hospice of the East Bay.
