Giovanni "John" Smecca, Entrepreneur, Mentor, Provider, and most of all, Loved One passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday November 20th, 2023. John Smecca was born in Gela, Sicily November 7th, 1940. After serving as a Drill Sergent in the Italian Army, John came to the United States where he spent some time working with his brother in New Jersey. After hearing Glen Campbell's "Galveston" during a card game, John decided to move to the island where his life came together. John found happiness in the similarities between the island and his hometown, built the Marios we know and love today, and met the love of his life. John and Ellen's love story began at Marios Flying Pizza, and before long they were happily married in 1971. They spent the following years establishing their roots and building the foundation for the beautiful family and legacy that we have today. Along the road, John had his fair share of good times, whether it was spending time with friends and family or going gambling on weekends with his wife Ellen, he always knew where the party was. Nothing could get in the way of John and his love for scratch-off's, card and table games or anything that he could try his luck at. In his younger days, racing was his go to adrenaline rush, and with his buddies there wasn't anything they couldn't do, from working on their cars or racing the tracks with his infamous Tosto, the adventures never ceased. His nephew Franco said it best, "He was a special man of talent, of humanity, of desire to live, with thousands and thousands of stories to be told through his communicability and his irony. "John is preceded in death by his parents Giuseppe and Franca Smecca, his siblings Antonio "Tony" Smecca, Giuseppina Campagnola, Lia Russello, and his nephew Gilbert Barham. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Ellen Moon Smecca. His children Franca Smecca (Shane Snider), Marisa Rojas (David), Giovanna Buckley (Ross), Giovanni Smecca (Rocio).
