LeRoy Gerald French, age 82 of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Society in Larimore, ND. LeRoy was born on February 17th, 1941 in Grafton, ND. He was the son of Edward and Natalie (Nettie) French. He attended and graduated from high school in Grafton. After high school, he had various occupations but his longest career was in the construction industry. This makes a lot of sense due to his love for the outdoors. He would spend most of his days in the summer riding his mountain bike all around Grand Forks and would take several trips to Turtle Mountain State Park. The winter months he could be found getting his exercise by walking indoors at the mall with his hand and ankle weights. He enjoyed watching football and hockey games and especially enjoyed attending UND football games where he tailgated with his brother Marvin and niece Francine. In the evenings, he would venture to the local dive bars to play BINGO, if the giveaway was worth his time. He had a way of knowing when he had a good chance of winning and his intuition turned out to be correct most of the time! He really enjoyed the quiet life he made for himself. LeRoy is survived by his sister, Elaine Novak, Grafton, ND; his brother, Marvin French, Grafton, ND and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Lawrence, his sister Caroline, his brother Edward, his brother-in-law: Vivian Novak and his sister-in-law Geraldine French. A burial and celebration of life will be planned for late Spring/early Summer of 2024.Show more

Helen C. Haug, 94, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at her home in Grand Forks. Helen was born on April 4, 1929 to Emil and Agnes (Gust) Kozel. She grew up in the Red River Valley and graduated from East Grand Forks Senior High in 1947. After high school she worked as a telephone operator. Helen was united in marriage to Les Haug and together they had seven children. Helen cared for many children, as a daycare provider, for over 40 years. Helen is survived by her children, Claudia (Stefen) Honl, Grand Forks, Coral (Phillip) Blanchard, Waynesboro, GA, Forrest (Kimberly) Haug, Gyndon, MN, Diana (Larry) Hayes, Buxton, ND, Darby (Kevan) Rabat, Middletown, MD, Holly Boulware, Brookings, SD and Natalie (Karl) Kostelic, Brighton, CO; and 13 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, Emil Jr. , Robert, Ted and George Kozel; sisters, Agnes Kobetsky, Ann Lind and Mary Kozel; and son-in-law, Jeffrey Boulware. ObituaryDonald Merlin Fertig, age 84, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully at his home on November 21, 2023. He was born in Hallock, Minnesota on September 29, 1939, to the late Donald and Margaret (Blair) Fertig and grew up in Roseau, Minnesota. He joined the United States Air Force after high school. He proudly served his country for 22 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant. He enjoyed sharing stories of his time in the military including his year in Vietnam. After his retirement from the military, Donald worked at C&R Laundry for many years and as a courtesy driver for Altru Clinic in Grand Forks. Donald is survived by his wife, Mary, children, Paula (Craig) Monette, Donna Fertig, Amber (Bryan) Trosen, Tony Bowman and Malinda (Andy) Deitz. He was a proud papa to 12 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, sisters: Bonnie (Bruce) Greene and Margorie Kompeleini. Donald loved watching sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings, Twins and North Dakota Fighting Sioux. He was a councilman and proud member of the Hosana Full Gospel Church in Grand Forks. Robert C. Johnson, age 74, of Grand Forks, ND (formerly Valley City and Jamestown, ND) passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on November 27, 2023. He was born in Valley City, ND on October 31, 1949, to the late Robert C. Johnson Sr. and Mary Ann (Beck) Johnson. Robert was the oldest of 10 children. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol C. Johnson. Robert and Carol had two children Teri (Dave) Holt, Grand Forks, ND and James (Traci) Johnson, Savage, MN. He was the proud grandfather to five grandsons: Jaeden Holt, Ben Johnson, Brandon Holt, Zach Johnson, and Rylan Holt. The joy in Bob's life was spending time with his family, and grandchildren. Pride in his grandchildren was evident any time you talked to him. Enjoying golf and following his grandson's sporting events was his passion. He enjoyed good music, good food, and playing cards. Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His laughter and sense of humor will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. Robert is also survived by seven siblings: Deb (Jeff) Johnsen, Pam (Wayne) Aslesen, Rod (Paulette) Johnson, Greg Johnson, Barb Allen, Nancy Gehring, Kirby (Kris) Johnson. Roy Wayne Evans formerly of Broken Bow passed away Wednesday, November 28, 2023 at the age of 59 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He was born September 16, 1964 in Chandler, AZ the son of Troy Wayne and Vera Yvonne (Wilmoth) Evans. Roy was a 1982 graduate of Broken Bow High School. He worked as a welder in Oklahoma, Kansas and North Dakota. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and working on his Jeep and pickup. He never met a stranger and enjoyed playing the Slot machines. He is preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Yvonne Evans; niece, Rita Brantley and brother-in-law, Kevin Monroe. Roy leaves to cherish his memory, daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Aaron Harder Broken Bow, daughter, Samatha Evans of Idabel; daughter and son-in-law, MacKenzie and Lane Wallace of Marion, Kentucky; brothers, Rodney Evans and wife, Judy of Broken Bow, Randy Evans of Garvin; sisters, Rhonda Brantley of Eagletown, Robin Shupert and husband, Darin of Idabel, Ranelda Colson and husband, Kenneth of Golden; grandchildren, Tyler, Andrew and Kelsie Dillard of Idabel, Jaden Harder of Broken Bow, Forest Wallace of Marion, Kentucky; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. John Howard

John Thomas Howard, 86, Grand Forks, died Monday, November 20, 2023, at Edge Wood Vista, East Grand Forks. John was born September 26, 1937, in Lepanto, Arkansas, the son of Thomas and Mary (Barber) Howard. He grew up in Lepanto, where he attended school, graduating in 1955. In August 0f 1956, John joined the US Air Force, where he proudly served until August of 1977. He was a member of the security force serving abroad in Germany, Thailand, and many other Air Force Bases in the United States. John met his wife Mary Dawn, and they were married in Grand Forks in 1968. In 1978, John began working in Thompson, North Dakota as the Chief of Police. He kept the streets safe and the traffic slow until his retirement in 2000. John loved to go bowling and had a perfect 300 game. He loved to fish and would take his children and grandchildren fishing with him. When he would take his girls fishing, John would only get to bait their hooks and take the fish off the line of all 7 of them. John loved to hunt deer and spent many years hunting with family and friends. He loved traveling with Mary Dawn, and spending time with his 18 grandchildren. John is survived by his children: Cindy (Galen) Ibes, Marlyce Peterson, Valerie Peterson, Shelly (Roger) Bondy, Diana (Gary) Kunz, Jim (Tammy) Howard, Brenda Peterson, 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter Sherry, grandsons: Michael Peterson, Matthew Howard; sisters: Norma, Agnes, Bobbi, and brother Tommy.
