Dennis Gottschalk

Dennis Gottschalk

Age - 78

October 23, 2023

Dennis "Big Den" Gottschalk passed away on October 19th surrounded by his family and lots of love. Denny was born, raised and resided in his hometown of Winona, MN his whole life, other than his time serving in the Coast Guard. That was not only a source of pride for him, but began his lifelong love of the water, including all the good times on the Mississippi River with his family and many friends. Our family also appreciated the special services and kindness the Winona VA showed to him. And it was during his time in the Coast Guard while stationed in Cleveland, OH that he was set up on a blind date with a lovely blonde named Judy and the rest is history. While Big Den wasn't at all big in stature, he had the biggest heart of anyone we knew along with a great big, wonderful personality, so the nickname sure was fitting. Big Den loved the simple pleasures in life, including an ice-cold Busch Light, a cruise in his red Mustang convertible, a piping hot Rocco's pizza, grabbing Kwik Trip coffee and finding trouble with his best friend of 60+ years, Robert "Brother Bob" Grant, doing projects and grabbing a beer and burger with his best buddy Paul "Tollie" Tollefson and telling his granddaughter Clara Jude she was literally the best at everything she did. That included watching Clara for hours on her trampoline and on her swing set (a gift from Grandma built by Big Den and Brother Bob) doing all her tricks and shows for Grandpa. It was a match made in heaven. Denny spent his entire career as a successful salesman, not surprising to anyone that knew how much he loved to talk and meet new people. He retired at the top of his game and loved his second career as full-time Grandpa. One of Big Den's passions later in life was travel. He loved going on international cruises, spending time in Florida during the winter, visiting Seattle and sunny California. Our family also wants to say a very special thank you to the staff at Gracewood Senior Living in St. Paul, MN for all their care and compassion for Big Den. Denny is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Judy, his adoring daughters, Michelle Gottschalk and Kimberly Gottschalk (and son-in-law Tommy Kueppers who saved him from finally being the only guy in his immediate family), his beloved big sister, Diane "DeeDee" Gottschalk, the light of his life, granddaughter Clara Jude Kueppers, his favorite sister-in-law Janie May (and the whole Cleveland Crew) and so many family and friends that he loved deeply. Denny was preceded in death by his treasured Mother and Father, Ruth and Arnold Gottschalk, his dear siblings, Darrel Gottschalk, Ardys Malesker, Merlin "Butch" Gottschalk and Sharon Gottschalk as well as his shenanigan co-conspirator, brother-in-law Tommy May. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Winona County Veterans Services at 225 West Second Street Winona, MN 55987. There will be an upcoming Celebration of Life for Big Den on Saturday, December 9th (his birthday month) at The Riverport Inn in Winona. More details to follow but know there will be a cold Busch Light or a hot cup of Kwik Trip coffee for all of those that can join us. Patricia Altobell

Patricia Altobell

Age - 80

September 27, 2023

Patricia "Patsy" Altobell, age 80, of Winona, MN, died on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Adith Miller Manor, with her loving daughters by her side, after a heartbreaking cognitive and physical decline from dementia. Patsy was born February 4, 1943, in Rochester, MN to Sandino and Sidonia Altobell. She grew up in Winona with her five siblings and many neighborhood kids always playing together and the families taking care of each other in the neighborhood. She graduated from Cotter High School. She married in 1963 (later divorced) and after her three children were born and in school, Patsy went back to school herself and graduated from St. Teresa College with an Art degree and plans to teach. When she decided teaching wasn’t for her she tried many different career paths from dispatcher, to bartender, to photo retouching and Certified Nursing Assistant to name a few. She moved to New Mexico briefly and then on to Southern California. She returned to Winona and dedicated herself to her children and to helping others in need. When her kids were younger, she made sure that the neighborhood kids would all get fed breakfast on weekend mornings and would recognize all of them with treats or small gifts at holiday time. She gave her kids the best and most creative birthday parties and always had fun, creative and crafty things for them to do. She was known for welcoming everyone into her home for big spaghetti dinners on New Years Day. She was a selfless and fierce woman and mother. She especially loved music and dancing. Patsy had two daughters who were her pride and joy. She would jump at the chance to travel with them and she spent time with them daily, helping in any way needed. Patsy suffered horribly from dementia, and while it robbed her of so very many things, her feistiness remained. Throughout all of it, her intelligence and silliness would still come through in small ways. She will be remembered for her endless encouragement, wisdom, intelligence, giving, caring and kind ways. She is survived by her loving daughters Jenny (Boomer) Olsen of Winona, and Shelley (Mike) Olsen of Winona; two sisters: Sandra and Marie; two brothers Allan (Judy) and Steve; grandson Bryan; many wonderful nieces and nephews and their families and of course special friends who shared so many fun, amazing memories over the years. She lost her one son, Ted in 1988 and struggled to accept that loss throughout the years. We are beyond thankful that her pain and suffering are gone. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Special thanks to the staff at Adith Miller Manor who took care, showed kindness and patience, and practiced person-centered care with Patsy. Her family is forever grateful. Please celebrate her life by raising a glass and toasting the great years - she would want that. Patsy’s remains have been graciously and gratefully accepted by Mayo Clinic Anatomical Services. In lieu of flowers the family asks to consider donating in memoriam to the Winona Area Humane Society or the Alzheimer’s Association. To remember Patsy — pay it forward, show a kindness to a stranger, compassion and forgiveness to those that offend, and be a good human to all. A celebration of Patsy’s life is being planned, and will be announced later. Online condolences or memories may be left for Patsy’s family at www. watkowski-mulyck. com.Show more
