Charles Morris

Age - 77

Charles Frank Morris passed away in Graham, Texas on November 30, 2023. He was born in Lampasas, Texas on August 15, 1946, to Willace John (W. J. ) and Dorothy Morris. Charles spent four years in the United States Army as a staff sergeant while stationed in Italy and Fort Bliss. He was a lifelong learner with an insatiable desire to learn and develop new skills across many different areas of interest. In his early years, Charles worked with his father on a farm in Williamson County. He married Ellen Pitcock at First United Methodist Church, Graham in July 1971. They moved to Hutto, Texas and in 1972 Charles opened a home construction company in the Austin area. After many successful years, Charles and Ellen moved to Bryan, Texas where he enrolled at Texas A&M to study petroleum engineering. Becoming an Aggie (Class of ’82, Whoop!) was one of his greatest joys. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Charles thrived in the academic setting. When a professor presented a formula on water injection and solvability that at the time had not been solved, Charles presented the solution in a paper, earning an acknowledgment from A&M and the opportunity to present his findings at an industry conference in New Orleans. His formula was implemented into the curriculum at A&M and continued to be taught for years. Following his graduation from A&M, Charles accepted a position with Pitcock, Inc, and in 1984 he moved his family to Graham, Texas. He spent many years working in the oil and gas industry, eventually retiring from the Texas Railroad Commission. He then began a hobby of woodworking which he enjoyed greatly. He had immense pride in creating beautiful pieces of art and many of his family and friends are fortunate to own one of his pieces. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Graham, Rotary Club of Graham, and the Young County A&M Club. Charles (or Poppy as his family knew him) loved to travel and many of his best memories are from trips around the country with his grandchildren – lighthouses in Cape Cod, whitewater rafting at Yellowstone, deep sea fishing in Biloxi, gelato in New York City, and Native American pow wows in Oklahoma. He was their constant supporter, often being one of the first in the audience or in the stadium, ready to cheer them on. He also liked road trips, taking the "road less traveled" to see the scenery, crops, and geography. Charles is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen Pitcock; daughter, Mary Heartfield and husband Alex; daughter, Amanda Wells and Justin Masters; grandchildren, Chase, Mia, Rebecca, and Graham Heartfield, and Garrett and Emily Wells; sister, Nancy Johnson and husband Eric; mother-in-law, Mary Pitcock; sister-in-law, Suzanne Morris; brothers-in-law Louis and wife Meredith Pitcock and Tom Pitcock; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, David Morris; and his father-in-law, Louis Pitcock Jr. Charles will lie in state Monday and Tuesday, December 4-5 at Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held December 11th at 10 a. m. at First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Third Generation Fund at First United Methodist Church Graham (700 Third Street) or Rotary Foundation (my. rotary. org or 1560 Sherman Ave, Evanston, IL 60201).Show more

Jackie Piland

Jackie Piland

Age - 86

November 29, 2023

Jackie Bob Piland, age 86, passed away peacefully in his home on November 26th, 2023, with his daughter, Heidi, by his side. Jack, as we all called him, was born on April 27th, 1937, in Fort Worth, Texas, to JB and Ruth Piland. Jack was raised in the River Oaks area of Fort Worth and graduated from Trimble Tech High School in 1955, ironically the same year the second generation Chevrolet Bel Air debuted. Jack loved fast cars and raced in many sanctioned drag races and has a box full of trophies to show for it. After high school, he was drafted for a stint in the Army and was honorably discharged after his service, which included time in Hawaii. Jack attended trade school where he became licensed in construction and carpentry. His long career in construction led him to a job in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where he met Ruth Hughey in early 1963 at an A&W Root Beer stand. They were married on August 31, 1963, and relocated to Houston where Jack took a job with Cadenhead Construction. Jack and Ruth had a love affair that lasted 60 years. After Ruth passed away several weeks ago, we talked to Jack, and he couldn’t remember them ever spending a night away from each other. That is so rare. They welcomed Heidi into the world on October 13, 1965, their only child. She was the apple of his eye! After Heidi was born, Jack and Ruth moved to Hurst where they lived for the next 32 years. Jack, Ruth, and Heidi loved to go camping and so enjoyed going with their friends. This ultimately led them to look at property at Possum Kingdom Lake, where they purchased their existing homesite in 1976. They moved to PK full time in 1995. Jack and Ruth became fixtures at Possum Kingdom Lake, with Ruth being involved in the community civics and Jack in most ongoing construction projects. If it wasn’t done up to Jack’s specifications, then it wasn’t done right!! Jack was a family man, always there for Ruth, Heidi and his granddaughter, Sloane. He was faithful, hard-working, and always 100% had their backs. Jack was generous with his time. He never shied away from hard work when it came calling, especially when his PK neighbors needed a helping hand. He loved golf and had two hole-in-ones to his credit. Jack loved company to come visit and was never happier than on summer holidays when everyone was at the lake. He loved to play shuffleboard, throw washers, and generally loved to compete. We’ll miss him for being the ringleader for those fun times. Jack is survived by his daughter, Heidi Urban and her husband, Stacy Urban, granddaughter Sloane Cooper, three nieces, Donna Wright, Kelly Bailey, and Shelly Howle. The family extends their gratitude towards the team at Solaris Hospice. They were so caring as they assisted us in Jack’s final days. A graveside ceremony will be held Wednesday, December 6th at 1pm, at Pickwick-McAdams Cemetery at Possum Kingdom Lake. The family welcomes those afterwards by gathering at Heidi and Stacy’s house to celebrate Jack’s life. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at alz. org.Show more

Babe Ruth Wisdom-Peterson-Laymance, ninety-five, of Nixa, MO, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 7, 2023. Babe has finally realized her heart's desire, "I want to go home. " No more sickness, pain, or heartache. Babe entered this world on October 20, 1928, to William E. and Mattie P. Wisdom of Jermyn, TX. She was preceded in death by O. B. Peterson (husband) 1946-1981 and George T. Laymance (husband) 1982-2001. As a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by two sons: Rev. Dr. Mikeuel E. and Rev. Charlene (wife) Peterson of Springfield, MO, and Danny L. and Mary (wife) Peterson of Franklin, PA; one daughter: Pamela R. Peterson and William (husband) Boner of Waxahachie, TX; grandsons: Mikeuel (Mike) L. Peterson, Brian Peterson, and Logan Smith; granddaughters: Michella A. and Rev. Cristina Duque, and Makenzi L. Duque. Babe served as a housewife, attended nursing and cosmetology schools, and ministered in the Loving Assemblies of God church. Additional education came from living on a farm and ranch near Markley, TX. There, she learned to cook on a wood stove, turn a windmill on and off, attend to cattle, plant a garden, butcher chickens, turkeys, and hogs, and avoid snakes. At an early age, Babe became a Christian and later a member of the Loving Assembly of God church. After moving to Graham, TX, she became a member of the First Assembly of God church (now Faith Center) in Graham, TX. She served as a Sunday School teacher, sang special songs, and led her children to follow Jesus Christ. Babe and a close friend, Earlene, would have a prayer meeting and be led by the Holy Spirit to go to a stranger's home and find the woman of the house too ill to serve her family. They would have prayer, sweep and mop the floors, cook a meal, and clean the kitchen. All of this expresses God's love for seemingly forgotten people.
