Rene Schnurr

Rene Schnurr

Age - 76

December 10, 2023

Rene' Holmes Schnurr, 76, of Louisville, KY, transitioned peacefully to her Heavenly Father on December 6th surrounded by her loving family and dear friends. Born in Indianapolis, IN, on August 31st, 1947, to Kenneth Lyle Holmes and Rosamond Stokes Holmes, she graduated from White Fish Bay High School in Wisconsin in 1965. Later in life, she attained a B. A. in Education ('95) and a Masters in Teaching ('97) at U of L, and Rank One ('04) and Reading Recovery ('06) certifications from Indiana Wesleyan. Rene' would be the first to tell you she held the most degrees of anyone in her family. A devoted wife, awesomely fun mom, fiercely loyal friend, and proud aunt and grandmother, Rene's life was defined by dutifully yet cheerfully playing whatever role her family required for them to thrive. Whether this took the form of being a stay-at-home mom, taking on part time jobs at clothing stores, or enjoying a fulfilling 23-year teaching career in JCPS, her unique flair and energy benefitted those lucky enough to cross her path. Never one to take life too seriously, she always went out of her way to celebrate any person or occasion she could. Making quasi-heart-shaped pancakes on Valentine's Day for her family made that day special. More importantly, she started the tradition of exchanging poems with her sons every year, which carried on for over 30 years and eventually included her daughters-in-law and grandchildren. This treasure trove of loving words and fond memories is a priceless gift she left for us all. Ensuring her hair, nails, and outfit were always stylish and on point, the self-proclaimed "Princess" of the family gladly added the title of Nana 'Ne as her family grew. Regular slumber parties with her "girls" complete with decorations, presents, and matching "jams" for all was one of her favorite pastimes. Her fondness for animal prints was only riveled by her affinity for glitter, and she proudly passed these tastes down to her granddaughters. Regardless of whether she was trying to return an item at a store without the receipt or requesting a chore to be completed by one of her boys, Rene' was particularly adept at getting her way. The phrase "yes, dear" was perhaps the most often repeated line by her loving husband, Big Marty. A parishioner and consummate volunteer at Ascension Parish for many years, she later joined Southeast Christian Church and loved serving regularly in the Children's Ministry. She is survived by her sons Ken (Mandy) and Marty (Andrea) Schnurr, grandchildren Mia, Macy, Eleanor, and Marty (IV), her brother Dana (Jill) Holmes, nieces Bailey and Molly, and nephew Luke. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Marty Schnurr, Jr. Rene's visitation will be on Tuesday, December 12th from 3 - 7 pm at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Her celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, December 13th at 12 pm at the Chapel in the Woods, 1407 Moser Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nativity Academy at St. Boniface, 529 East Liberty St. , 40202.Show more
