YOAKUM: Julius Rudolph (JR) Best, Jr. , age 76, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2023. He was born January 24,1946 in Yoakum, TX to Julius and Willie Mae (Hansel) Best. J. R. worked as a Marine Technician for Texas Department of Transportation for 32 years, for VISD as a carpenter for 8 years and worked for Sweet Home School for the last 4 years as a bus driver. He also served as vice-president for the Pilot Grove Association for many years. Survivors are his wife, Shirley Ann (Joost) Best; daughter Amy Ann Ferry Grimes; sons Julius R. Best III and Michael Shane Best; grandchildren Devin Michael Plisko (Bailey), Abigail Lynn Ferry, Justin Grimes, Justin Ferry (Savannah); great grandchildren Allison Lynnlee Ferry and Cooper Ferry and numerous cousins. Preceded in death by his parents; son Christopher Wayne Ferry and great grandson, infant Carter Ferry. Graveside Service 2 p. m. , Friday, October 6, 2023 at Witting Cemetery in Witting, TX, with Rev. Kenneth Hodges officiating. YOAKUM: Clarence R. Beaufils, Jr. , 89, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. He was born February 28, 1935 in Denver, Colorado, to Clarence R. Beaufils, Sr. and Annie Elizabeth (Young) Beaufils. Clarence was a member of the Colorado Air National Guard, and during his tenure flew the globe with the CANG Aerial Demonstration Team called the "Minute Men". He was in the United States Air Force for 33 years, (attaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant), where he fought in two armed conflicts, the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict, as well as several other strategic deployments, retiring in 1985. After retirement he joined the Coastguard Auxiliary program where he became Coxswain Certified. Clarence married Diana Cullens of Denver, Colorado. Since Clarence was retired they were free to follow Diana's career rise, which brought them to many great cities and many great friends. They were married 35 years. In his earlier years, he trained and showed horses, and competed himself in rodeo sports. In his later years, one of his biggest joys was derived from training labrador dogs for hunting, as well as engaging in his own bird hunts. Diana joined him in this effort whenever her free time allowed. In his most recent years, he was involved in training Retrievers for hunting and field performance events, and was an accomplished Master Level AKC field performance judge and a Finished Level UKC/HRC field performance judge. Until his health started failing, one of his most fun moments, with Diana by his side, was duck hunting in the Laguna Madre on the Texas Coast, where he once took a hail Mary shot, and downed five birds with one shell, gaining, from his friends, the nickname, "Five Feathers". Survivors are his beloved wife, Diana Beaufils of Yoakum; daughters, Elizabeth Michelle Beaufils and Janine Beaufils of Colorado; sons Michael Andre Beaufils of Washington and Adrian Richard Beaufils of Oklahoma. SHINER: Leola Milton, age 102, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023. She was born September 1, 1921 in Yoakum to the late Jerome and Jessie (Harrison) Hall. Leola was the last surviving of the four children born to the Hall family. She attended Evergreen School in Edgar and then attended Asbury School until the 10 grade. Her family helped with farming and harvesting crops, and picked cotton for a living, traveling to Gonzales, Shiner and Edna Communities. Ms. Leola was baptized at Zion Baptist Church in Edgar and remained an active member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Her faith carried her through the many changes that occurred in her 102 years. On April 2, 1944, she married Boston Milton Jr. , and moved to Shiner where they were owners of Milton's Cafe for 29 years. Mr. Boston passed away July 1998. There were no children born to this union but Ms. Leola helped raise Mr. Boston's grandsons from a previous union, and they loved and cared for her all her life. Ms. Leola was the caregiver to the household of the late Mrs. Lassie Wolters and Mrs. Garden Yates. For 55 years she was the caregiver to the household of Mr. and Mrs. Don Kaspar, thus having the pleasure of watching and caring for 4 sons and 10 grandchildren of the Kaspar family. Survivors are her grandsons, Kelvin Flowers (Renelda) of Killeen, Pastor Boston Lynn Gates (Paula) of Yoakum and Douglas Gates (Pastor Sandra Gates) of Shiner; special niece, Dell Ruth Brown of San Antonio and a host of extended family and friends. Preceded in death by her parents; husband Mr. Boston; sister, Ethel Hall; brothers, Woodro Hall, Zernon Hall and Ira Hall. Funeral Service 10:30 a. m. , Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Methodist Church in Shiner with Pastor Jimmy Hastings officiating. Burial to follow at Bluebonnet Cemetery. YOAKUM: Frances Marie Morrow Walden, 90, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, November 7, 2023. She was born August 22, 1933 in Stratton to Sidney and Lucy (Myers) Morrow. Frances cherished her time growing up with her four siblings at Stratton. She was the youngest child in the family. She loved her siblings with all her heart, and shared many fond memories of her childhood with her children and grandchildren. Frances graduated at age 16 from Yoakum High School. After a trip to UIL State in shorthand, her superintendent thought she would make a fine employee so she went to work for him after graduation. He then encouraged her to apply for jobs in Victoria and she moved to DuPont at a young age to join the typing pool. She worked as a secretary at DuPont and later worked in Civil Service in San Antonio. Frances met her beloved husband, Bill, through the efforts of their church family and they married after a very brief courtship. Their "two weeks of dating" became part of the family lore, especially since they were married for 52 years. She was a pastor's wife from the beginning. Frances loved being a wife and mother. She baked, sewed, and canned. She made her last batch of jelly from the wild grapes at Stratton in June after picking them herself. She was famous for her chocolate chip cookies and carrot cake. She loved her church family and her children and grandchildren and taught her family nothing but kindness and the importance of remaining true and faithful to the Bible's teachings. Survivors are her daughters, Karen Barber and husband Dr. John Barber of Stratton and Lucy Murphy and husband Pat Murphy of Marble Falls; son Ron Walden and wife Cindy of Seguin; 10 grandchildren, Justin Murdock (Kirstyn), Kelly Murdock Murray (Lee), Travis Murdock (Becky), Rachel Murdock Brandt and husband Shawn, Sarah Murphy, Campbell Murphy, Garrett Walden and wife Shauna, Joshua Walden (Jessica), Courtney Walden Miller (Cole), Emilee Walden; and soon to be 14 great-grandchildren: Hailey and Connor Walden, Keaton, Wyatt, and Holden Walden, Jessa, Avery, and Cayson Miller, Wiley and Clara Murray, Natalee and Audree Murdock, Maverick Murdock and Baby Murdock in December, and Stella Brandt. She also welcomed into her heart Gray Marrs and Nathan Houk, who spent so much time with her in Marble Falls these past few months. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill Walden (2016); sisters, Virginia Styles and Margaret Benbow; and brothers, TJ Morrow and Sterling Morrow. YOAKUM: Ellorine Emily Knape, 97, went to meet her Lord, Tuesday, November 7, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born October 22, 1926 in Moulton to Gustav Gummelt and Emily Christine (Kaase) Gummelt. Most knew her as "Renie". She graduated from Moulton High School and attended business college. She married her beloved Harold Knape on December 30, 1945 in Moulton, Texas. Harold was the Yoakum School Superintendent for many years and Renie was the worker behind the scenes, raising their children and helping out where needed in the community. Renie was a devoted member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Yoakum for many years, until her move to Hondo in 2019, where she attended St. Paul Lutheran Church. She worked as a secretary at Trott Clinic for 15 years, and enjoyed sewing, playing bridge, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. She was quoted for having said, that the greatest lesson in her life was to "Spend time with God each day". May her legacy of kindness and faith be an inspiration to others. Survivors are her daughter, Kathy Richter and husband Robert of Hondo and son, John Knape and wife Jan of San Antonio; six grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold Knape; daughter, Charlotte Knape.
