Josephine Espaillat (Joann), 78 of Hoboken, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 11, 2023, at Peace Care St. Joseph's, Jersey City, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Hoboken to the late Marie Kazmierski (Jaccodine) and James Barbara. Joann was a lifelong resident of Hoboken. Before her retirement, Joann was a clerk for Lasker, Stone & Stern, New York City for over 30 years and then for several years at Hamilton Park Nursing Home, Jersey City. Joann loved spending time with her family, friends and dog Milo. She was an avid bird lover and a food connoisseur and enjoyed collecting recipes. She is predeceased by her mother Marie Kazmierski (Jaccodine), step-father Vincent Kazmierski, brother John Kazmierski, nephew Vincent Kazmierski, and Aunt Vera and Uncle Edward. Surviving are her children, son Anthony Walenty and wife Mary Beth of Parlin, daughter Jamie Ann Espaillat of Hoboken, her grandchildren Anthony Walenty and fiance Abbey, Nicholas Walenty and wife Katie Rose, Amanda Walenty, Jailin Rosado, and Julian Rosado. Her sister Annette Aiello, brother-n-law Raymond Aiello, sister-n-law Joan Kazmierski, niece Bridget Kazmierski, and cousins Janet and Sally Zelinski. Extended family and friends who will miss her dearly. The family will welcome friends at Lawton-Turso Funeral Home, located at 633 Washington St, Hoboken, NJ 07030. Visitation for Joann will take place on Wednesday, September 13th, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anne Roman Catholic Church, located at 704 Jefferson St. Hoboken, on Thursday, September 14th, at 10:00 AM. Cremation services will be held privately. Kathleen Anne Filak, of Jersey City, NJ passed away on Monday November 13, 2023. Kathleen was born and raised in Jersey City. She was a loving daughter, sister, and aunt. She graduated from St. Dominic's Academy in 1981. She also attended Providence College in Rhode Island and Georgetown University in Washington, DC. before graduating from New Jersey City University with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and a Masters of Arts in Mental Health Counseling. Kathy had a passion for working with young adults and loved her time working as the Assistant to the Director of Advisement at NJCU and as a counselor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a number of years. She later became a full time caregiver for her parents but was still able to put her talents to use offering counsel and advice to her many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Her ability to listen and offer advice without being judgmental was a gift, and Kathy's family and friends are going to immensely miss those late-night conversations with her. She was also a therapist for the Alfred M. Fiume Foundation, a cause very near and dear to her heart. Kathy had a keen intellect and unending compassion for others. She will be remembered for her warm smile and her amazing sense of humor, which included an ability to find comedy in any situation. She was extremely well-read and could converse on just about any topic, and was especially passionate about her hometown of Jersey City and the revitalization of Journal Square, in her own backyard. Kathy is survived by her father Andrew T. Filak, her sisters Barbara Goss (the late Jimmy) and Maureen Sauer (Shaun) and her four brothers , Andrew, Jr (Patricia), Michael (Carol), Douglas (Jacqueline) and Ronald Filak (Michele). She is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews, as well as a large extended family, and her beloved "morkie" FiFi. Kathleen was preceded in death by her mother Grace Miller Filak, her companion and confidante Fred Filak, and her niece Beth Anne Fusco Sharp. A visitation for Kathleen will be held Friday, December 8, 2023, from 6pm to 8pm at Evergreen Funeral Home, 159 Garrison Avenue, Jersey City, NJ. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 3026 Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City, NJ.
