Joseph Clifford Slack Jr. , known to his friends and family as Joe, passed away at his home in Rotan, Texas, on September 10, 2023. He was born on February 3, 1956, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Joseph C. Slack Sr. and Lula Belle (Hobbs). Joe will forever be remembered for his remarkable career in the United States Air Force. Throughout his life, Joe embodied a profound love for his country. He proudly served in the US Air Force for an impressive 30 years, leaving an undeniable mark on the military community. Rising through the ranks, he distinguished himself as a Chief Master Sergeant. He became the First Sergeant for the 16th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron—the Air Force Special Operations Command's largest squadron with over 950 personnel. Joe's journey in the Air Force began on July 28, 1976, when he enlisted as a Security Police Specialist. He retired from active duty on August 1, 2006. With unwavering commitment and utmost professionalism, he dedicated three decades to defending freedom and promoting peace. Joe found joy in various hobbies and interests outside his military service. He was an avid reader and had a deep appreciation for movies and music. One cherished pastime Joe particularly enjoyed was watching wrestling with his children, sharing laughter and memorable moments with them. He mastered his culinary skills in the kitchen, and his family will fondly remember him for his teriyaki chicken. Joe had a generous heart and always ensured others were provided for; his actions reflected that. Joe was a devoted husband to Belinda (Fortenberry) Slack, and together, they shared a beautiful journey. His unconditional love extended to his children: son Charles Clifford Slack and wife Melanie; daughters April Slack and Shailyn Justice Kendrick-Dickerson; and grandsons Carlo and Xavier. He loved his fur babies as though they were his best friends. To honor the life of Joseph Clifford Slack Jr. , there will be a visitation held on September 13, 2023, at Weathersbee Ray Funeral Home in Rotan, Texas. The visitation will begin at 6:00 p. m. The funeral service will occur the following day, September 14, at Weathersbee Ray Funeral Home. The service will commence at 10:00 a. m. , with burial in the Belvieu Cemetery.

Ruth Mildred Davis, the Sweetheart of Roby and a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully in her home on November 26, 2023, at the age of 100. She leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and unwavering support for her family, friends, and students. Ruth was born on May 11, 1923, in Houston Texas. However, she considered herself a true native of Port Arthur, where she grew up. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in May 1941, Ruth pursued higher education at North Texas State University in Denton. It was there that she became a member of the renowned North Texas State Acapella Choir under the direction of Dr. Wilford C. Bain. Ruth's passion for music led her to graduate from Abilene Christian College with a Bachelor of Music Degree. Throughout her life, Ruth held various roles that allowed her to touch the lives of many people. She worked as a legal secretary for 15 years before dedicating 23 years to teaching in schools. For several decades, she served as a dedicated schoolteacher and librarian for Roby ISD, leaving an impact on countless students who fondly remember her guidance and encouragement. Music was an integral part of Ruth's life. She served as the First Methodist Church organist for an impressive 43 years. Ruth often mentioned that playing the organ made her feel closest to God—a sentiment that showcased her deep spirituality and devotion. In addition to her role as an organist, she shared her love for music by giving private piano and voice lessons to many aspiring Roby students. Ruth's talent extended beyond music; she was known for her diverse interests and hobbies as well. She excelled in making homemade jellies, jams, relishes, and pickles—an art that earned her the title of a master craftsman in homemade delicacies. As the owner and operator of Early Texas Taste, Ruth enjoyed showcasing her products at arts and crafts shows and relished the opportunity to meet new people. Her green thumb was evident through her skill in growing plants and harvesting her own pomegranates, pears, pecans, and mesquite beans—all of which she lovingly used in her culinary creations. Ruth's creativity knew no bounds as she delighted in making jewel trees and exploring Cajun recipes. Her Gumbo was legendary among those fortunate enough to taste it. Not only did these hobbies bring her joy, but they also allowed her to share her passions with family and friends. Despite facing challenges as she grew older, Ruth remained a steadfast rock for her family. She faced being homebound with unwavering strength, never once complaining about her circumstances. Instead, she made the best of every opportunity and continued to inspire those around her with her determination and positive outlook on life. Harris Davis, the love of Ruth's life, became her husband in 1940. Together they moved to Roby, creating a treasured home filled with love and warmth. Sadly, Harris passed away too soon in 1970, but Ruth's devotion to him remained steadfast until the end. She never remarried, honoring their beautiful relationship. Ruth was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Patty Davis. Ruth is survived by her loving son Richard Scott Davis of Abilene, Texas; daughter Patricia Lynne Flach of Roby, Texas; two grandchildren: Jarris Davis (Laura) of New Castle, Oklahoma; Candace Flach of Roby, Texas; three great-grandchildren: Mason and Landon Davis of Oklahoma; Alexis Craver of Roby, Texas; and one sister, Charolette Peters of Spring, Texas. Funeral services to celebrate Ruth's life will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 10:30 am in the Roby Community Church located on N Church Street and WN 2nd in Roby, Texas. In the warm embrace of his loving family, Robert peacefully passed on to heaven Monday evening, September 25, 2023. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, October 14 at 1:00 p. m. at the Rotan Methodist Church with Jeff Sedberry officiating. Burial will be at Belvieu Cemetery. The family will visit with friends at the Rotan Community Center after the service. Born May 29, 1945, in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, to the late Frederico Martinez and Eleanor (Ozuna) Martinez, Robert's life was a testament to unwavering love, dedication, and craftsmanship. Robert's heart found its match in Susan Anne Weatherman, whom he wed on September 15, 1967, in Arlington, Texas. Susan, who preceded him in passing March 2, 2022, was his lifelong companion, a partner in farming, and the love of his life. From his earliest days as a young man until his final moments, Robert was a rancher, farmer, and welder. His passion for the land and the life he built upon it was evident to all who knew him. He and Susan ran their farm together, creating cherished memories along the way. Robert's heart was as vast as the land he worked in Fisher County, where he reveled in fishing, hunting, and telling wonderful stories. Beyond his love for the land, Robert was a master craftsman, channeling his creativity into building remarkable creations. His hands were gifted, and his legacy lives on through the tangible works of art he left behind. Robert was also a faithful member of the Rotan Methodist Church, where his spirit found solace and community. Robert's memory is lovingly treasured by his surviving family members, including his son, Josh Martinez of Lubbock, and his three daughters: Jackie Martin and her husband Kenny of Snyder, Kristi Immitt and her husband Jeff of Plano, and Lynne Jenkins and her husband Brian of Abilene. He is survived by four brothers: Jimmy Martinez and his wife Karen of Rotan, Ben Martinez of Rotan, Rene Martinez and his wife Edie of Richardson, and Hector Martinez of Odom, along with two sisters: Lupe Middendorf of Anna and Mary Helen Ackerman of Austin. Anna Martinez of Kingwood, Robert's sister-in-law, is also among the cherished survivors, including numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Robert's impact extends to the next generations, as he leaves behind eight grandchildren: Katie Pickrell and her husband Josh, Ryne Bennett, Ella Bennett, Sofia Immitt, Andrew Martinez, Faith Jenkins, Jeral Jenkins, and Jacob Jenkins. He also had the joy of knowing three great-grandchildren: Keraleigh Pickrell, Brynleigh Pickrell, and Raeleigh Pickrell. In Robert's journey to heaven, he joins those who preceded him, including his parents, his beloved wife Susan, his granddaughter Kera Danielle Martin, and his brother Joe Fred Martinez. His memory will forever remain a beacon of love, family, and craftsmanship in the hearts of those privileged to know him. Alta B. Hinson, 89, of Rotan passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2023. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday September 26, 2023 at the First Baptist Church of Rotan with burial to follow in Belvieu Cemetery. There will be a time of visitation prior to the service at the church starting at 1:00 pm. Services are under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home of Rotan. Born on August 9, 1934, Alta B. Hinson was the daughter of A. B. and Oleta (Mize) Parker. After graduating from Rotan High School, she completed her nursing training from Hendrick school of Nursing in Abilene and became an RN. She went on to complete her Bachelor of Science degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1970. She married the love of her life, Garvis Hinson on June 9, 1956. Alta dedicated herself to her profession and became a beloved member of the nursing staff at Callan Hospital and later at Fisher County Hospital. Throughout her tenure there, she touched countless lives with her kindness, expertise, and unwavering dedication to providing excellent care to her patients. Her passion for nursing was evident in all that she did. Outside of her professional life, Alta found joy in various pursuits. She loved quilting, sewing, reading, and crocheting. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Rotan, where she taught children’s Sunday School for many years, and was active in the choir, handbells, kitchen hospitality, and various children’s activities. Alta leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity. She is survived by her daughter Brenda McCall; son Paul Hinson and his wife Delanna; daughter Linda Brown; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Garvis Hinson, and her sons-in-law Jack McCall and Dean Brown.Show more

Walter Charles Cleveland, affectionately known as Charlie, left this earth to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 6, 2023, leaving behind a legacy filled with love and cherished memories. Born on August 9, 1941, in Rotan, Texas, Charlie was the son of Walter Hardin and Docia Leonora (Williamson) Cleveland. As a husband to Darlene Cleveland for 61 years and a father to two sons, Walter Charles Cleveland II and Wayne Timothy Cleveland, Charlie deeply cherished the bonds of family. His love for his grandkids knew no bounds; they held a special place in his heart. Hannah Parr and her husband Tyler, Claire Cleveland, Caroline Lee and her husband Chase, Walker Cleveland and his wife Katrina, Sarah Whitmire and her husband Clayton, William Cleveland and his wife Kelli were blessed to have shared unforgettable moments with their doting grandfather. Charlie took immense pleasure in witnessingtheir growth and was overjoyed at the addition of four great-grandchildren – Patrick, Sammy, Avery, and Harrison – with another little one on the way. Charlie will also be missed by his beloved brother Leonard Cleveland, as well as countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Charlie's life was marked by his dedication to farming and ranching. He carried on the proud family tradition with passion and skill. The farm he owned was not only his livelihood but also a symbol of generational heritage, belonging before him to his father and grandfather. Charlie loved others as himself - just as scripture instructs. He dedicated time to meeting the needs of others by way of a listening ear, acts of service, and prayer. During his time on the volunteer fire departments in Paducah and Rotan, Charlie often ran into danger to save people, animals, buildings, farms, and ranches. Known for his affable nature, warm personality, and wonderful sense of humor, Charlie was truly "one of the good ones. "Those who knew him best would attest to his zest for life. He approached each day with thankfulness for the simple joys given to him by our Heavenly Father. Whether working on the farm, spending time with loved ones, or simply embracing a quiet evening on the porch with Darlene, Charlie lived life the right way - humbly and full of gratitude. The loss of Charlie will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing leaves a void in the lives of his surviving family and friends, but each is rejoicing that he is truly healed and home! A Celebration of Life service will be held on September 9, 2023. The event will take place at Rotan Methodist Church located at 209 N McKinley Avenue. The service will begin at 10:00 AM. Gary David West, 77, passed away August 31, 2023. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 at the Roby First Baptist Church, Roby Texas on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The burial will be on Sunday in Pickwick McAdams Cemetery, Possum Kingdom Lake Graford, Texas. Gary was born September 25, 1945 to David Isaac and Alpha (McKay) West in Sweetwater, Texas. He went to Roby School. He was a Navy Vet who served on the USS Independence during the Vietnam War. In the Navy he worked as a welder. Gary married Tempie Bridges November 22, 1971. They have shared fifty-two years together. Gary went to saddle making school in 1974. After finishing they moved to Seymour, Texas and opened West Saddler. In 1980 Gary and Tempie moved back to Roby with their son Ty Justin West, born November 22, 1979. Gary loved being a rancher, his grandkids, outdoor cooking, reading, friends and family. Gary loved to dance; he met Tempie at the Texas Cowboy Reunion in Stagecoach in Stamford Texas and had danced for fifty-two years. They have gone many a mile across Texas and met many new friends. Gary is a member of the Fisher County Rodeo Association. He enjoyed fishing and watching Rodeo on TV. Gary worked as a rancher/cowboy, welder, Fisher County Precinct 4. Gary went to work for TDCJ and retired in 2010. He was a vital asset and was incredible with training dogs. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, David Isaac and Alpha West; sister, Evelyn Musgrave; sister-in-law, Thelma Kimbrell; and son, Ty Justin West. Gary is survived by his wife Tempie; grandchildren, Kyler, Kadee, and Sara; sister, Fern Arendell; brother-in-law, Travis Bridges (Kay Lynn); nephews, Russ Arendell (Sally), Lucas Bridges (Ana), Eli Bridges(Emily); niece Geslia Monroe (Alan); great nephews, Jordan, and Jesse,; great nieces, Micah Snider (Will), Julia, Sarah, Emma and Alexandria, and many friends. He loved spending time with his friends and family, he had a contagious smile and beautiful blue eyes.
