Joseph Anthony McHugh, 77, formerly of Old Forge and Moosic, passed away Oct. 5, surrounded by his family at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida, after battling chronic illness. Born Nov. 21, 1945, he was the son of the late Betty Gilotti McHugh. He was raised in Old Forge and was a graduate of the Old Forge High School's Class of 1963. He enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Guam during the Vietnam Conflict. Joseph was a renowned chef who spent more than 35 years as the head chef and owner of Nana's Pasta House in Moosic until his retirement to Vero Beach in 2012. Joseph had many talents beyond cooking, such as skiing, fly-fishing and golfing. Joseph also enjoyed travel and had an eye for photography. Joseph was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles and word games. But more than anything, "Papa Joe" loved his grandchildren without abandon and found them to be endlessly entertaining. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Patti Keating McHugh, and their children, Tony McHugh, South Riding, VA, and Sheli Pratt-McHugh and husband Adam Pratt, Scranton; grandchildren Penelope Louise and Emmett Joseph Pratt; siblings Lorraine McHugh Atapovich, Scranton, and Marlene McHugh Marmo, Florida; in-laws Susan McHugh, Old Forge; Stan Carey, Old Forge; Michael Robert Keating (Peg), York; Barbara Lutman, Kansas City, Mo. ; William Keating (Nancy), Swoyersville; Mary Beth Miglionico (Al), Springfield, Pa. ; Carol DeLeo (Harry), West Pittston; Marge Keating, Lancaster, South Carolina; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Joseph was predeceased by siblings Robert and Larry McHugh and Carol McHugh Carey; in-laws Michael and Betty Keating; brothers in-law Brownie Atapovich and Al Marmo; and niece Marla Miglionico. He was the grandson of the late Sal and Jenny Gilotti. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at 10:00 a. m. at the Prince of Peace Parish, 123 West Grace Street, Old Forge. Elaine Mae Hameister, 93, entered into eternal rest on December 1, 2023. Elaine was born on September 2, 1930, in Mt. Clemens, MI, to Charles and Elsie Sanders. On February 20, 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Hameister, who survives. The Hameister's have enjoyed nearly 70 years of joyous, spiritual matrimony. Also surviving are daughters Susan and husband Randy Thomas and Cynthia and husband John Ross, and their extended families. A polio victim at the age of 19, Elaine persevered with a gritty countenance and overcame numerous health obstacles. She received a BS Special Education degree from Eastern Michigan University and taught school in Flint, MI in the 1960's. Because of Bob's employment with Fisher Body, Elaine spent her married life in Detroit, Flint and Birmingham MI and Cincinnati, OH. They retired to Petoskey, MI in 1988 and eventually relocated to Vero Beach in 1996. With Elaine, no one was a stranger and her friends were many!Elaine was a strong proponent of volunteerism and served on a variety of boards and organizations including the YWCA, Petoskey MI Community Foundation, and most dear to her heart, Hospice and VNA in both Petoskey and Vero Beach. She was also a proud sister of the PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization). A forever wordsmith, Elaine took great pleasure in completing the crossword, jumble and cryptogram on a daily basis. In later life, she authored numerous books including "Let's Put Nice on Ice", "What is Moving?", and a favorite of many Vero Beach residents, "Yes Grandma, A Ladybug Went to Bethlehem". Elaine's creative, clever and witty repartee will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Renaissance Senior Living and the VNA Hospice community, with special thanks to nurse Margery, for their care and kindness. Elaine's life journey was made more comfortable by the joyous companionship of Helen Muzaki, Victoria Dobson, Meeka Gooden, and her special angel, Lashanda Williams. We are forever grateful. Ellen Theresa Murphy 87 of Vero Beach, FL passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Friday December 1, 2023 in Vero Beach, FL. Born June 16th, 1936 in Jamaica, Queens, NY to Louis T. Klein & Margaret Klein, Ellen was a loving wife and mother whose children meant everything to her. Ellen was raised in Jamaica Queens NY with her brothers and sisters, and then met and married Robert A. (Bob) Murphy from Jersey City NJ on November 18, 1961. They began their married life in Jamaica and had four children, before the family moved to East Windsor, NJ in 1969. They met many wonderful families and lifelong friends in East Windsor in their neighborhood and at their church St. Anthony of Padua in Hightstown NJ. After spending three years in Schaumburg, IL, they returned to New Jersey and resided in West Windsor for 18 years during which Ellen was employed as a Customer Service Representative for Dow Jones & Co in Princeton. Ellen retired in 1999 and relocated to Renaissance at Manchester NJ in 2000 (enjoying winters in Vero Beach) until her final move to Vero Beach in 2017. Ellen was a devout Catholic and her faith was a very important part of her life. She taught Sunday religious education classes, learned American Sign Language to be able to teach several deaf children in her parish, and served as lector. She was active in the Renaissance community where she enjoyed her weekly canasta game with her sisters and close friends and was a member of the Irish American Club. She enjoyed visiting her grandchildren, especially on their birthdays and special events and milestones in their younger years. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading and participated in the seemingly constant viewing of college and pro sports events on television. She is predeceased by her husband Robert A (Bob) Murphy in 2011. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert J and Maryann of Middletown NJ, Michael P & Debbie of Plain City OH, Thomas & Roni of St. Petersburg FL, daughter Noreen E Sousa & husband Jeff of Vero Beach FL, sister, Margaret Kerner and 4 grandchildren, Patrick Murphy of Edina MN, Bob Murphy of Madison WI, Erin Murphy of St. Petersburg FL and Haley Murphy of Middletown NJ. Christopher Thomas Chomenko, 53, of Vero Beach, Florida. His death was sudden and unexpected. Sunrise ~ November 14, 1970 Sunset ~ November 30, 2023 Christopher was born in Chester, Pennsylvania to the late Thomas Alexander Chomenko and Marjorie (Massey) Chomenko. Most of his youth was spent being reared by his favorite aunt and uncle, Oxana and Egor Szwec. A jack of all trades, Christopher worked hard to provide for his family. Chomenko Maintenance, Repair and Attic Insulation was his latest business endeavor with partner, Daniel Cannon. Christopher enjoyed tropical fishing, watching cartoons and spending time with loved ones. He will be dearly missed. Those who will still cherish memory are his best friend, and wife of more than 20 years, Wanda Mosley Chomenko; his three children, Desiree Shi Chomenko, Terrell Rasheed Bey, and Zekiel Thomas Chomenko; brother, Lawrence "Larry" Chomenko; sister, Marlene Chomenko; niece, Amanda Chomenko Geis, whom he loved more like a daughter and her husband Chris; mother in law, Dwana Thompson "mommy" as he affectionately called her; brother in law, Jerome K. James Anderson Urner, 84, of Vero Beach FL and Bay Head NJ, passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2023. Born and raised in New Jersey, Jim was a graduate of the Pingry School in Basking Ridge, NJ. He earned his BA at Grove City College, Grove City, PA, and an MBA at Trinity College, Hartford, CT. He raised his family in Granby, CT, where he was a weekend farmer; his career was in life insurance marketing and sales support. His last 25 years were as Vice President at Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company in Hartford, CT. Jim was a life-long member of the Bay Head Yacht Club where he enjoyed sailing, tennis, and bridge. He was a decorated sailor in single or double-handed boats on Barnegat Bay, claiming championship titles from 1953-2001. Jim was honored to be elected to the rank of Commodoreof the BHYC from 2007-2009. He was also proud to have been awarded BHYC Bridge Player of the Year in 2015. As an Internationally certified White Water Slalom judge, Jim was invited to judge kayak and canoe slalom events in the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, GA. Additional community involvement included: Vestry member of St. Alban's Church in Simsbury, CT, Councilman of Bay Head municipality, volunteer at ReClam the Bay, and Foundation Board Trustee of Ocean Medical Center (Brick, NJ). He was a devoted supporter of UConn Women's basketball, the Giants, and the Mets. Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years Sherrerd Welles Urner of Bay Head, NJ and Vero Beach, FL, and three children: Nancy Urner-Berry (Scott), of Simsbury, CT; James Anderson Urner, Jr. (Jill) of Glenmont, NY; and Katherine Schott (Jared) of Pawtucket, RI. Also, grandchildren Margaret, Katherine, Jimmy, Jack, Katie, Hannah Dempsey, Jared, Kelly (Troy), and great-grandchildren Oula, Kjell and Ursula; brother Stephen Urner (Jane) of Seattle, WA, and nieces Betsy and Nancy; step-brothers Nathaniel, Sherman and Gordon Gifford, plus beloved Kellogg cousins. Charles Bernard Hommel passed peacefully on November 1, 2023 at VNA Hospice in Vero Beach. He fought a valiant fight and was surrounded by his loving family. Charlie was born on May, 28, 1952 to Helen and William Hommel. He attended and graduated from Perth Amboy Vocational High School. This is where he learned the craft of carpentry, which he excelled at for the next 50 years. He shared his knowledge and love of the trade with his friend, Thoma, his brother-in-law, Bob, and his son Charlie. Charlie also loved sports and when he wasn't watching his son or grandsons compete in basketball, football, baseball or golf, he was watching his beloved Mets or Jets on tv. Charlie was a true sports fan and cheered for many teams through the years. Charlie was predeceased by his parents and by his brother, Billy. Charlie leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years, Karen Marie of Vero Beach; 2 brothers, Richard and Robert; his daughter, Melinda, of Port Reading; his son Charlie (Angy) of Colonia; and his much loved grandchildren, CJ, Dylan, and Hailey of Colonia and William of Port Reading. Charlie had many friends and loved doing what he could do to help them. He will be remembered by these friends as a truly stand up guy. His family will remember him by his loyalty, his wittiness and his willingness to enjoy every cherished moment with his loved ones.
