Joseph D Gomes, age 94, a dedicated husband, father, educator, and pilot, entered eternal life on Monday, September 11, 2023. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born on October 11, 1928, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to the late Gabriella and Manuel Gomes. He had one brother, Mario Gomes, and seven sisters: Fernanda DeAndrade (Dan), Marie Baldasari (Nilo), Pat Sylvestre (Leo), Rose Calhoun (Joe), Alice Fournier (Leo), Dorothy Talik (Joe), and Carol Perry (John). Joe joined the Navy when he was 17, serving for two years aboard the USS Portsmouth as a radar operator. His ship was commissioned after WWII and embarked on a Goodwill Tour to several countries in the Mediterranean, the Adriatic, and along the coastal African areas. While in the Navy, Joe and Martha DuPonte were married at St. Leo's Church in Pawtucket, RI on November 15, 1947. They were high school sweethearts and their marriage flourished for a remarkable 75 happy years. Following Joe's discharge from the Navy, he graduated from Providence College in 1953 with a degree in Education. He was a lifelong teacher at Middletown High School and participated in the planning of the curriculum for this first high school in Middletown's history. Joe taught English and Spanish. He also served as a faculty advisor for Tempo, Middletown High School's literary magazine. He concluded his career in the vocational program teaching Carpentry. In addition, Joe taught at the Newport War College working with foreign officers improving their proficiency in English speaking skills. As a loving father, Joe often included his children whenever helping relatives and friends with building projects, passing on to his children his invaluable knowledge. Joe's life was guided by his dedication to God which was expressed through his service to his community. In 1963, St. Mary's Vincent DePaul Society sponsored a family from Cuba during the Cuban crisis. Joe and Martha were deeply involved in this family's successful resettlement, which included the parents and three children. Joe and Martha served as Godparents for the Baptism ceremony of the family's youngest child. Joe's proficiency in Spanish allowed him to serve as interpreter for much of the family needs. It was a rewarding challenge for all involved. For over 70 years, Joe was an active member of St. Mary's Church where he attended daily Mass. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society. He also initiated the recitation of the Rosary after Mass with a dedicated group of attendees. This devotion continued for 33 years. Joe was an avid sailor and shared this pastime with his family and friends. For a few summer months, he was a sailing instructor with the YMCA. His many young students were thrilled to sail the two Pearson sloops in the program. In addition, Joe was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 6, St. Mary's Parish. The experience of traveling in canoes on the Wood River with the troop was a treasured memory for all. One of Joe's greatest passions was aviation. He earned his Pilot's license in the early '80s. He and his wife Martha (a Pilot also) enjoyed extensive flying in New England, Florida, Nova Scotia, and a month-long cross-country trip to California. He inspired many others to pursue their pilot's license, including his daughter Celia and grandson John. Joe is survived by his wife Martha, his nine children: Larry Gomes (Kate), Rosemary Pelissier (Joe), Celia Gomes (Gerry), David Gomes, Stephen Gomes, Andrew Gomes (Heather), Robert Gomes (Tee), Matthew Gomes, Anita Marshall, and by his sister Dorothy Talik (Joe). Joe also is survived by his ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The wake will be held Friday, September 15, 2023, 9:00 am at the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High Street, Bristol, RI. She especially took pride in her confident, talented and beautiful four granddaughters and handsome and smart grandson. But, in her later years, it was the arrival of the three "amigas" her wonderful great-granddaughters that kept her young, engaged and happy. They looked forward to seeing vavo and she could not wait to see them and spend time recreating the many things that she had taught her children and grandchildren. Her siblings brought her great joy as they spent many happy years with laughter, stories, and perfecting many family recipes. They gave her much happiness and strength. She was a humble, kind, strong and wise woman, who relied deeply on her Catholic faith, one she quietly practiced with action and deed for over 50 years as a faithful parishioner at St. Elizabeth's Parish. Debra Marshall

Debra Marshall

Age - 67

November 19, 2023

Debra Joy Anderson Marshall, the self-proclaimed Goddess of Knowledge and Power, 67, of Bristol, RI passed away on November 14, 2023 at Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport. She was the wife of Thomas Marshall and mother of Katie Marshall (Marc Powell). Deb was born in West Hartford, CT on August 11, 1956, she later moved to Portsmouth, RI where she graduated from Portsmouth High School. She then attended the University of Rhode Island and Roger Williams University. She is survived by her sisters, Dawn Turcotte and Diane Huber and their husbands David Turcotte and Peter Huber as well as Tom's brothers and their wives, Robert and Ann, David, Gary and Lisa Marshall. She loved being an aunt to her nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Turcotte (Danny), Kelsey Turcotte (Tyson), AJ Huber (Kelsey), Shelby Simpson (Trevor), Arlo "Abs of Steel" Huber, Morgan Turcotte, Jacob "Ocho" Hornoff, John Marshall (Julia), Gary Marshall, Kit Marshall (Chris), Gregory Marshall (Monica), and Bethany Powell (Adam). She also leaves behind her cousins Kathy, Brian and Mike Conroy as well as great nieces and nephews: Chloe, Charlie, Leo, Lauren, Cameron, Elliot, Aubrey and Emmy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Judith Anderson, and her in laws, Robert and Ethel Marshall. Deb began her career as a call center manager for AT&T, but her true calling was teaching. When AT&T's Providence call center shut down, she went back to school to become a teacher. She then spent over 15 years at Kickemuit Middle School. It was at KMS where she claimed the moniker "the Goddess of Knowledge and Power". Neither her students, nor fellow teachers escaped the nickname and it quickly spread throughout Bristol. She was a leader in the Bristol/Warren community, and spread her core values of education, kindness, and selflessness to everyone she crossed paths with. Deb organized many of the celebrations at the middle school, primarily to make sure there was a cake from Cake Gallery included, otherwise it was just a meeting. She shared her flexible "teacher schedule" with others, often hosting the neighborhood kids on snow days and she probably holds the record for most carpool miles driven. Outside of school, she was a strong role model for the young women she coached on the cheerleading teams for the Bristol Mustangs, Kickemuit Wildcats and Mt. Hope Huskies. Coaching youth sports usually lasts as long as your kids are involved, but not for Coach Debby; she started coaching before Katie was old enough to be on the roster and continued well after Katie graduated high school. In fact, she rarely coached her daughter's team at all, demonstrating her dedication to helping as many people as she could. She served in leadership positions at the local pop warner and RI high school cheer organizations and was a judge for competitions across the region. Deb wore many hats, off the field, and on the field, both figuratively and literally. You could always pick her out in the crowd by looking for the crazy hat she picked for the event. She loved road trips with Tom, especially to spend Thanksgiving in Norfolk. Summers were spent with her sisters and the rest of the neighborhood in Snug Harbor with penny candy, boat rides and lobsters. If you invited her to a game or performance, she would be there proudly cheering you on. She loved a perfect Sunday morning coffee (hot, light no sugar with a straw) while completing the crossword; extra points if there was a clue should could read to Katie or Tom to guess. Her favorite party trick was knowing each and every Division I College's Mascot, her favorite being the Rhode Island Rams. Always the teacher, she would gladly teach you all about Rhody Basketball (and just how close that Duke game . She loved reading and waited each year for the new Stephanie Plum novel to which she would laugh so hard she'd drop the book. Dogs made her smile and she would stop whatever she was doing to pet one that crossed her path. Along with her friends, Deb made sure that each year's 4th of July parade experience was special, waking up at some ungodly hour to head down to the route to make sure we had the perfect spot in the shade. She never forgot the magic of Christmases when Katie was young and worked hard to make sure every family got to experience that magic at least once. Deb was known by many and loved by all, most of all she will be missed greatly by Katie, Tom, and all of those who she loved most Services are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road Warren, RI where the family will receive relatives and guests on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 9AM to 12 PM, this will be followed by a service at the funeral home at noon. In lieu of flowers please consider an act of kindness or a donation to either the Four Hearts Foundation for an inclusive and adaptive playground (checks can be mailed to PO Box 912 Portsmouth, RI 02871 or by visiting their website: ) or the college fund of a child you love. Jennifer Tobin

Jennifer Tobin

Age - 77

October 10, 2023

Beloved wife, stepmother, and Nana, Jennifer (Wignall) Tobin, of Bristol, RI died peacefully on October 7, 2023 following a lengthy illness. A Master Gardener, and lifelong nature enthusiast, Jennifer was aptly born in the throes of springtime, on May 5th, 1946, in Kent, "the Garden of England. " Her childhood held many happy memories of her late parents, Rosina and Lambert Wignall, and her sister Pat. She fondly remembered numerous trips to London, her father's love of photographing the family, cheerful holidays together, and closest to her heart were teatimes spent in her mother's warm and loving company. Like many who came of age in the 1960's, Jennifer's fierce and independent spirit blossomed, and she was inspired to expand her horizons. Her first endeavor as an au pair provided opportunities to travel and live abroad in Europe. In 1969, Jennifer settled in Chicago, where she worked at the British Consulate. Jennifer stayed in touch with her family oversees, and loved sending American pop culture treats to her nieces, Cindy, and Tracy, who cherish the memory of receiving Elvis's memorabilia from their cool aunt one Christmas. What would become Jennifer's greatest and most fulfilling adventure began with a connection forged in humor. While enrolled in a class to become a volunteer for the Lincoln Park Zoo, Jennifer appreciated the wit and snark of a fellow classmate, which peppered the otherwise bland content of their instruction. Meeting Bill in 1983 and marrying him only a few short months later was the joy of Jennifer's life. Together they became Master Gardeners, bought a farm, and housed numerous cats and a very special dog named Finnegan. When they weren't nurturing a spectacular yard of native plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables, attending classical music performances, visiting family and friends, or volunteering, they enjoyed many camping trips, jaunts to Rhode Island, and holidays with Bill's three children, Quinn, Brendan, and Nell. The three fondly remember Jennifer's aptitude for baking, and their delight followed by dismay in learning that the delicious bread they'd just eaten was made from zucchini. Though Bill and Jennifer had hoped to retire to Colcannon, their farm in Indiana, illness rerouted their plans to Rhode Island. Jennifer and Bill enjoyed being close to the children and their grandchildren, not to mention a whole new population of native plants, flowers, and trees to learn about. The deep bond that Bill and Jennifer shared was evident to all, but especially in their last few years together. Jennifer's tireless and devoted caretaking of Bill through multiple, debilitating illnesses was heroic, as was her creativity with various, layered jello configurations when he could no longer eat solid food. Jennifer's indomitable spirit called her to make new friends through gardening and stay active after Bill died in 2020. While Jennifer's final illness cruelly robbed her of independence and her quick wit, the retreat into memory brought her to a place and time where she would often be observed enjoying tea with her mother, or imagining herself in the kitchen, waiting for Bill to come in from the garden. Jennifer's legacy is in the beauty and magic of nature, which she so diligently worked to preserve, and in the example of care and dedication she modeled in her love for Bill. Jennifer is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother-in-law Barry. She is survived by her sister Pat Hudgell, nieces Tracy Ford and Cindy Parker and their families, Quinn (Samantha) Tobin, Brendan (Nina) Tobin, Nell (Joe) Melanson, and grandchildren Oliver, Sam, and Hayden Melanson, Charlie Tobin, Tallulah Tobin, and Erich and Scott Alberg. Services will be private. In Jennifer's honor and memory, we encourage you to go outside, plant something beautiful, or help your local library or animal shelter.Show more
