October 7, 2023
Somerville, MA
On Monday, October 2, 2023, Joseph Alexander Clements (Clem) passed away peacefully at his home in Somerville, Massachusetts, surrounded by his family. He was 90 years old. Clem was born to Harry Norman and Jennie Clements on December 30, 1932, in Newport News, Virginia. Clem was a devoted family man and loved each family member dearly. Clem is survived by his wife, Martha, and their two children, son Stephen Clements and his wife Jean Clements of Framingham, and daughter Leslie Hughes and her husband John Hughes of Somerville. He is survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Clements of Austin, TX, Keri Clements of Windsor, CT, and Devin Hughes of Somerville, and his great-grandchild, Isabelle Clements of Austin, TX. He is also remembered and loved by many nieces and nephews (known to some as "Uncle Alec" and to others as "Uncle Clem"). Clem was preceded in death by his siblings, Harry Norman Clements II and Norma Goalder, of Virginia and Carrie Snow of Florida. After graduating from high school, Clem joined the Navy, where he served for 4 years in Newport, R. I. He served aboard the USS Yosemite, a destroyer tender, performing maintenance on battleships as a Bell Diver. While in the Navy, Clem met his wife, Martha Brown of Somerville, MA, on a blind date. Clem and Martha married less than a year later and were happily married for 66 years. For all the years they were married, Clem and Martha held hands everywhere they went. Clem worked for many years at G&L Welding and Raytheon. After he retired, in the winter, Clem and Martha traveled around the country in their RV and, in the summer, spent time in East Wakefield, NH, at their second home. Clem was a member of the Masonic John Abbot Lodge and was an amateur Ham radio operator. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and watching the Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins games. As a younger man, he enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Clem's main passion was woodworking. He designed and created furniture for his home, family, and friends. His latest passion was building stunning custom-made wooden gear clocks. He kept pictures of his creations on his cell phone and would proudly show them off to one and all. In memory of Clem, in place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, https://t2t. org/donate To plant Memorial Trees in memory of Joseph Alexander Clements, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.
