Joseph Campbell, known as Joe, was born in May Pen, Jamaica January 05, 1952. His mother, Anecia, had eight children with Fred Campbell, a farmer. The family moved from Lucky Valley, Jamaica to a farm named Woodleigh in May Pen. Their dad grew tobacco and sugarcane. Joe sometimes mischievous played with his brother Howard, and developed an interest in horse betting, which also sparked his love for numbers. He eventually followed his older brother, Edgar, to the U. S. where he obtained an engineering degree at The University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Followed by a masters in mining engineering at the Southern Illinois University where he met his wife Sherese Larkins. Joseph and Sherese married and had one son, Justin Campbell. The family moved across the country for his career. Joe went on to have a lustrous career in oil & gas, working for some of the biggest names in the industry such as Exxon and Shell. At one point, most likely the only black mining engineer in the country. Joe loved taking trips with his son back to Jamaica showing him the "ropes. " Teaching him how to ride a min-bus or eat a beef patty without burning yourself. All who knew Joe would say he was simply a funny guy and made you laugh when around him. When it came to sports, he loved soccer and track. When it came to furniture, he'd only buy an antique, and when it came to music, he was still singing Marvin Gaye up until his last few days. He could take one man's trash and make a dollar out of it. That was his life motto. On September 1st, 2023 Joe, age 71, was called home to be with the Lord. He was surrounded with love the night before with his son and ex-wife. He leaves behind his brothers, Edgar and Howard, along with his sisters, Marlene, Shirley, Angela, June and Pat. There will be a service from 5:00 p. m. until 9:00 p. m. , Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Claire Brothers Funeral Home, 7901 Hillcroft Street, Houston, Texas 77081. Venugopala Kalapatapu

Venugopala Kalapatapu

Age - 80

December 7, 2023

After a prolonged illness with dementia and brief hospice care, Kalapatapu Venugopala Rao ("K. V. Rao") passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 5, 2023. In many respects, Mr. Rao was a case study in contrasts: a converted left-hander who wrote right handed but played sports lefty, an electrical engineer by trade with a deep passion for the arts, especially poetry and story writing. Mr. Rao was a man of faith who happily served as the family astrologer and palm reader, but hated for anyone to base their lives on his prognostications. Notwithstanding all of his contrasting interests, though, in one aspect Mr. Rao was uniformly consistent: he loved his family with great passion and humor, and will be missed terribly by all who were close to him. K. V. Rao was born on May 5, 1943, in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, (British) India. He was the quintessential middle child, as the fifth of ten children, but he also took great pride in his role as the Elder Brother to his two surviving siblings, Vaidehi and Vyjayanthi. Mr. Rao spent his formative collegiate years at Anantapur Engineering College, now known as JNTU College of Engineering Anantapur. Notwithstanding his engineering degree, Mr. Rao's tales from this period typically centered around his service as the head of the mess hall, where he cultivated and refined his passion for cooking authentic vegetarian cuisine native to the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. In 1968, Mr. Rao met and married his life long spouse, Lakshmi. Together they moved from Machilipatnam to Haridwar, where the Ganges River emerges from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains, and then onto the United States. Mr. Rao was the proud father to three children, Viswanath (and Malavika), Seshasai (and Alanna), and Sagarika (and Amar Kosaraju). And Mr. Rao was even more proud to be "Thatha" or grandfather to eight grandchildren, of whom he loved to take pictures in age order: Ella, Asha, Jaisal, Anna, Jaya, Andrew, Meena and Katie. In his later years, Mr. Rao was also an affectionate and loving grandfather to Lakshmi's late sister's grandson, Jitendra Gopaluni, who returned the affection by selflessly taking care of Thatha's needs as his health began to fail. Ultimately, Mr. Rao was an early-rising homebody who loved to cook his own dinner, play Scrabble with his children and grandchildren, read the newspaper, watch Wheel of Fortune and go to bed early. Beyond his love of family, friends, cooking, astrology, writing, Scrabble, and Wheel of Fortune, Mr. Rao's life legacy would be incomplete without reference to his devotion to working hard in pursuit of the American Dream. Mr. Rao emigrated to the United States in 1973, obtained his citizenship by 1977, and voted in every Presidential election from 1980 to 2016. His job took him from Europe to Japan and places in between including the jungles of Colombia, South America, back country work tents in Nigeria, Africa, and the Persian Gulf desert towns of Saudi Arabia. Every place he went, he took immense pride in the impact of the work he did on the local and global communities who benefited from it. In his passing, we remember Mr. Rao for his quick wit, his forgiving nature, and the great pride he took in his family, his work, his country and his cooking. Funeral services will be held on December 10 at 10:00 am at Winford Funeral Home, 8514 Tybor Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to Alzheimer's Association (www. alz. org) in honor of Venugopala Rao Kalapatapu.Show more
