Joseph Alton "Alf" Braxton, 80, of Heathsville VA, went to be with the Lord on May 8, 2023. He was surrounded by his loving family and companion Carole Jett. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Braxton, father, Lorenzo Braxton, wife, Charlotte Capps Braxton, brothers and sisters, Jesse Dalton Braxton, Rufus "Knot" Braxton, LD Braxton, Ray Braxton, Roy Braxton, Elbert "Tuck" Braxton, Annabelle Braxton Blalock and Maggie Ruth Braxton, grandson, Carter Braxton Mann. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Braxton Myers, (Mike) of Spotsylvania, his daughter, Marie Mann, of Waynesboro, grandchildren, Joseph Howard Mann (Jennifer) of Reedville, Elizabeth Mann of Afton, Hunter Braxton Myers (Maddie), of Stafford, Madison Layne Myers, of Spotsylvania, and seven great grandchildren, Tyler, Carson, Brennan, Chloe, Isiah, Macklynn, and Kyle. Alf retired in 1995 from the Department of Agriculture after 32 years of Civil Service. He and his family enjoyed a second home in Fleeton Beach for several years before retirement. Upon retirement, he and his wife Charlotte relocated to the Northern Neck and purchased the Bailey Cockrell House on Main Street in Reedville, VA and operated a bed and breakfast there for several years. Alf was a spiritual man who enjoyed sharing God's love through music and mission with others. He served in many positions over the years at Afton United Methodist Church filling in as lay leader, Leadership Board Chair, Choir Director, and accompanist. He used his musical talents to speak into the hearts of all who came to church. He will be especially remembered for playing the piano before services where he praised God through the prophecy of the music he shared with those who listened. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and was loved and admired by many. The impact of Alf's life and legacy will be felt for years to come. He loved to play his baby grand piano and sing for his friends and neighbors and was quite an entertainer. Alf enjoyed a full and active life; never met a stranger and always went out of his way to help a friend in need. Funeral services will be held at Afton United Methodist Church, 5130 Hacks Neck Rd. , Heathsville, VA 22473 on May 13, 2023 at 2:00pm. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
