John Walter Schnurer of Gulliver, MI, age 85, passed away early Tuesday June 21, 2022, with his loving family at his side. He was born in a cabin on the River Road near Merwin Creek in Manistique, on January 28, 1937, the son of Clayton John Schnurer and Muriel Edith Anderson. John attended schools in Manistique. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. John was a plumber by trade, and spent the greater part of his life in Gulliver, MI. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church of Gulliver. John enjoyed picking blueberries, working in the garden, woodworking, fishing, trolling on Merwin Creek, hunting, telling and writing stories, and even published one book called "Big Daddy Wrote a Book". John loved spending time with kids and grandkids. He was affectionately known by loved ones as an "ornery ass bullshitter". John will be greatly missed. John is survived by his life partner Jessie Schnurer of Gulliver, MI; daughters Joni (Daniel) McCracken of Gulliver, MI, Barbara (Amos) Whittenmyer of Newberry, MI, Brenda Carter of Gaylord, MI, Tina (Anthony) Collison of Gaylord, MI; sons Kevin (Nancy Irie) Schnurer of Wallace, MI, Dale Schnurer of Gulliver, MI, Michael (Jodi Bosanic) Schnurer of Manistique, MI, Ronald (Lisa) Schnurer of Manistique, MI, Donald (Deb) Schnurer of Albert Lea, MN; numerous loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Muriel, his brother Donald Schnurer, granddaughter Melanie Schnurer, and great-grandson Bradley Carlson. Graveside Services will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Wood Cemetery in Gulliver, MI, with Pastor BJ Ash officiating. A Celebration of Life will follow at the VFW Post in Manistique.
