Durham: Edna E. Davis, 98, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2024 at her home. Edna was born June 1, 1925, in Durham County to William and Pearl Elliott. She graduated from Mills High School in Louisburg April 13, 1943. Edna worked at Sears in Durham for 42 years until her retirement in 1989.Edna was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and the Agape Bible Class. She enjoyed traveling with the Joy Club, traveling to the Holy Land and many other places.Edna was preceded in death by her parents William and Pearl Elliott; her husband Dee W. Davis; her sisters Aileen McGriff, Virginia Bennett, and Peggy Thomerson; nephew Donald Bennett. She is survived by her sister; Bobbie Dampier (husband Lawrence); nieces, BJ Perez and Deborah Bennett; nephew, Michael Dampier (Kim); great nephew, Robert Bennett; niece Dara Bennett; great-great nephew Zackary Bennett. Graveside services will be held on March 5, 2024 at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be Pastors Marc Francis and Shay Reyner with music by Al Huffman. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, make donations to Ridgecrest Baptist Church in her honor.

Mrs. Ethel Williams was born on June 29, 1948, to (the late) Dorothy Anna Blackwell and James Earl Land in Granville County, North Carolina. Mrs. Ethel Williams was preceded in death by her daughter Elizabeth Ann Williams. Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband, Walter "Wayne" Williams; son, Franklin Wayne Williams (Patricia); daughters, Torino Faye Chappell, Angela Michelle Roten; two sisters, Barbara Land Blume and Mary Harper; brother, Lawrence Henry Land; 11 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Williams was a lifetime resident of Durham, North Carolina. Ethel was a member of the First Pentecostal Church of Durham. Pallbearers will be Roger Dale Hatcher, Wes Andrew Davis, Randy Wilson, Nathan Greenhill, Michael Vavrick, and Walter Greenhill. Funeral Services are pending at this time. Flowers are acceptable.

TIMBERLAKE: Ada Walker Beakes, 72, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham with her family by her side. She was born in Durham County to the late William Herman Walker and Helen Pearce Walker of Durham.Mrs. Ada Beakes was a wonderful and loving wife of over 50 years to her sweetheart Tom. Family and close friends would loving call them “Tomada”. She was a wonderful and caring mother to her dear daughter whom she loved taking adventures with and babysitting her 4-legged grand dogs. She and her Sister were inseparable, growing up and growing older, they did everything together.She loved camping and spending time at her beach house in Emerald Isle with family and friends. Many days spent enjoying time on the screened in porch, bicycling around the island or on the beach relaxing and fishing.Mrs. Beakes was a devoted member of her church, Helena Methodist Church for over 30 years and served as their active recording church secretary.She is survived by her husband, Thomas Beakes; daughter, Stacey Beakes Mullenex (Donnie); and sister, Patricia Walker Deffenbaugh (Rex); nephews, Justin Deffenbaugh (Ericka), Blair Deffenbaugh (Laura).A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, March 5th at Helena Methodist Church with Marty Boddie officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at the church. She also leaves behind her Aunt Barbara Eve McCorkle, cousins Ben Fuller III & family, Dustin Fuller & family, Trey West & family, her brother Timothy Dickerson & family, of Hillsborough, NC and the extended Wright family.A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.Barbara will be remembered for her sweet tooth, her kindness, selflessness, gentle manner, and her quiet yet fierce devotion to Caiden and Shannon. We celebrate the life of James Curtis Owens, Jr., born November 26, 1987, in Durham, North Carolina. On February 26, 2024, he peacefully took his final rest and entered into eternal life at age 36. James Jr. was the son of James C. Owens, Sr. and Tiny E. Owens. James Jr. was a loving son, brother, and friend to many. He never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. He loved cooking, grilling, knitting, and spending time with his family and friends. To know him is to love him. He resided in Durham, North Carolina. He was educated in Durham Public Schools and received his high school diploma at Southern School of Energy and Sustainability High School. He attended Shaw University, North Carolina Central University, and completed his Medical Assistant degree at ECPI College of Technology. He worked as a caregiver for the Ficks’s Family, who loved him dearly. He enjoyed being a nurse and caretaker to others. James Curtis Owens, Jr.’s death has deeply affected his family. His memories will be forever cherished by his parents James, Sr. and Tiny Owens; two sisters, Crystal Houze and Tomika (Anna) Houze; his grandmother, Belinda Houze; Grandfather, Robert Worley; two nephews, Malik and Lavar; one great niece, Armani; a host of relatives and friends; and his beloved dog, Brownie, whom he adored so much.

Sandy was also a past member of the Sidney Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her sons, Michael Borden (Sarah) of Oxford, NC and William Hoffman (Paula) of PA; her brothers, Earl Hendee (Diane) of Sidney, NY and Richard Hendee (Karene) of Katy, TX; her grandchildren, Ryleigh, Davin, Raelyn, Jacob, Alexis, Amber and Cassie and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles "Chuck" Borden, whom she married on December 14, 1968, her step-son Bryan Borden, and her brother Jack Hendee.Visitation will be on Saturday, March 2, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan, located at 503 College Street, Oxford, NC. Burial with graveside service will be held March 5, 2024 at 1:00 pm in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney, NY.
