John Michael "Mike" Jernigan, 79, of Wichita Falls passed away on August 31, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 27th at Lunn's Colonial Chapel in Wichita Falls, Texas, with the Rev. Steve Sullwold officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home. Son of the late John and Ida Mae "Monk" Jernigan, Mike was born on July 23, 1944, in Little Rock, Arkansas. After moving to Wichita Falls while in elementary school, he graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1962 and then earned a BA degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where he was a member of the speech and drama fraternity. Following college, Mike enlisted and served in the U. S. Army Intelligence for 3 years, stationed in Germany. Returning to Wichita Falls, he worked as a broadcast journalist at KAUZ television station and then spent many years with OETA, the PBS television station in Oklahoma City, until retirement. Upon retiring, Mike graciously moved back to Wichita Falls to help care for his aging father with much gratitude from the rest of the family. He was an avid reader, loved listening to classical and jazz music, and enjoyed photography. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Ann Jernigan Binford (Frank). He is survived by his brothers Tim Jernigan (Susan), Jeff Jernigan (Nancy), and David Jernigan (Patty); sister Jill Jernigan Bray; 14 nieces and nephews and 8 grand nieces and nephews. Lucky Cleaver was born in Waxahachie, Texas July 16,1922. He graduated from Oak Lawn High School in 1940, before going on to spend two years serving his country in the United States Army during World War II, as a member of the 320 Barrage Balloon Battalion. Before joining the military, in 1942, he married the love of his life, Marie McKnight Cleaver, whom he affectionately called "Whetie. " They were married for 44 years before her death in 1986. During his early years he was a trained boxer, and it was one of his favorite sports to watch on television. After leaving the military, he attended Prairie View A&M University for two years and owned and operated a dry-cleaning business. Later, he moved to Wichita Falls, in 1950. There he worked at the Wichita Club and First Baptist Church from 1982 retiring in 1989. He also served as a deacon in his brother, Leroy Cleaver Jr. 's Jackson Memorial Church of God in Christ. Lucky loved to dance and when he heard music, he couldn't help but move to the beat. He took great pride in his expertly manicured lawn and vibrant Christmas light display. He had an infectious laugh and never met a stranger, just a friend he hadn't spoken to yet. He could often be heard reminding his family that "God is good" often adding, ". . . not some of the time, all the time. " Born L. G. Cleaver, he assumed the name Lucky when he enlisted in the Army. He was told he could not use initials, so he chose the moniker "Lucky. " He was known as "G-Daddy" to his grandchildren. Growing up, he was called "Wee-Wee" because he was the smallest of the three brothers. He was preceded in death by his two brothers Leroy Jr. and Emanuel, and sister Juanita. He leaves to celebrate his legacy, his four children Loris (William Sr. ) McNeel, Congressman Emanuel (Dianne) Cleaver II, Dr. Zora (Lee) Durham, and Marie Barge. Virginia Carol Lakey, 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 with her husband and grandson by her side. She was a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Friend, and Wife. Virginia was born to Robert Kiser and Florence Wolford in Fort Knox, Kentucky. She Graduated High School from Tombstone Union High School in Tombstone, Arizona. She Attended Western New Mexico University before moving to Texas where she graduated with a nursing degree from Midwestern State University. Virginia worked as a nurse in the operating room at Wichita Falls General Hospital for over 20 years. She worked as an assistant to Dr. Bates and retired from United Regional Healthcare System working in the quality control department. In 1995 Virginia volunteered her knowledge and skills for humanitarian purposes with Dr. Mustafa in the Middle East. She was a member of the AORN (Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) and a past president of the Senior - Junior Forum. Virginia married Shawn Lakey on June 6, 1979 in Sierra Vista, Arizona. They enjoyed traveling, and bonded over their love for desert landscapes and plants. Virginia was an avid reader, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with her dogs. Virginia touched the lives of many no matter the size of the interaction. She worked hard, and could make a big impression with a small amount of time. She was loving, dependable, funny, and caring. She was the best. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Kiser; her mother, Florence Wolford; and her sister, Laura Kiser. She is survived by her husband Shawn Lakey; her two daughters, Lauralee Gilbert and husband Jerry, Deanna Hall; her grandson Coleman Hall; and many cherished and beloved friends. Maxine Mae Holland 98, of Wichita Falls, Texas, passed away on November 21 2023. She was born May 25, 1925 in Bennet, Nebraska to Andrew and Anne Rodaway. Maxine grew up on a farm and graduated from Hickman, Nebraska High School in 1943. She married Richard Daniel Spomer in November of 1944. Dick preceded her in death on December 21, 1991. The couple moved from place to place with Dick's business, eventually purchasing Wichita Poster in 1972, which became Spomer Outdoor Advertising. Maxine was involved locally with National MS Society. She was involved in the political campaigns of Governor Ann Richards and State Representative John J. Gavin. She also owned Spomer Travel Service. In February of 1996 Maxine married George Holland and moved to Horseshoe Bay, TX. After George preceded her in death on May, 24, 2019, Maxine moved back to Wichita Falls to be with family. Maxine is survived by her children, Kathy Hammons (Howard), of Sacramento, CA, Lonnie Samek (Chuck) of Gainesville, TX and Rick Spomer of Wichita Falls. Surviving grandchildren are Hilary Buchanan (Ryan) of Sacramento, CA, Ashley Hollenbeck of Sacramento, CA, Bradley Marcus (Janice) of Austin, TX, Shawn Pautz of Richardson, TX, Jason Pautz (Barri) of Dallas, TX, Rhianna Sehr (James) of Carmichael, CA, Zachari Samek of Gainesville, TX, Rick Spomer (Betsy) of Houston,TX, Lois Mann (Tyler) of New Braunfels, TX. Great grandchildren Bailey Buchanan, Jacob Marcus, Kate Marcus, River Pautz, Keira Mulligan, Audrey Sehr, Sebastian Spomer, Carter Mann, Ramsey Mann and Denver Mann.
