John Marshell Hastings, of Shepherd, Texas, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the age of 77. Born on August 5, 1946, in Columbia, South Carolina, John was the son of John Marshal Hastings and Mary Ross Leckie Hastings. In his early years, John pursued a career as an electrical lineman before transitioning to become the proud owner of Hastings Salvage in Shepherd, Texas from 1988 to 2013. For over four decades, alongside his cherished wife of 40 years and 8 months, Lynn Hastings, John called Shepherd home. John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and hard work and he will be missed greatly. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Hastings, as well as his brother Gene Hastings. John is survived by his devoted wife, Lynn Hastings; his children, Wendy Yountz and husband Gray and Robert Hastings; stepchildren, Charles Walters and Robin Miller; brother, John Hastings; sister, Marion Mathis; grandchildren, Jenny, Amber, Marshal, Tito, Brittany, Travis, Cody, Clint, Sierra, and Ty; and twenty great-grandchildren

Barbara Ann Barlow, aged 81, a resident of Shepherd, TX, passed away on August 23, 2023. She was born on June 16, 1942, to Arvin and Annie Smith. Barbara's passing is preceded by the loss of her parents, her daughter, Sharon Barlow, and her brothers, Clifton Smith, Rex Smith, Billy Joe Smith, W. A. Smith, Jimmy Smith, Otis Wayne Smith, as well as sisters, Dorothy Charers, Katherine Comalander and Wanda Lavia. Barbara is survived by her beloved husband, Walter Barlow, Jr. (affectionately known as Tobe), her son, Walter Barlow III, known as Trey, along with his wife Tracy. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Brandon Barlow, Bradley Barlow, Shelby Barlow, Ashley Barlow, and Kaylee Barlow and great-grandchildren, Jacob Winstead, Katy Barlow, Maverick Barlow, Bryghton Henderson, and Kiley Henderson. Barbara was the epitome of a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her unwavering love for her family was evident in every facet of her life. She held her family close to her heart and cherished the time spent with them. Her warmth, kindness, and love created a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her. As a wife, Barbara stood as a pillar of strength and support for her husband, Walter, throughout their journey together. As a mother, she provided care, guidance, and unwavering love to her son Trey. As a grandmother, she showered her grandchildren with affection and created countless treasured memories. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, who will hear stories of her love and kindness. Barbara's absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Dorris Marie McGowen, born Dorris Marie Miles on June 27, 1959, in Livingston, Texas, peacefully passed away on July 1, 2023, in Shepherd, Texas. She was lovingly known as a sister, a wife, an aunt, and a special friend to many. Throughout her life, Dorris made lasting impressions on those around her with her kindness and dedication. Dorris received her education at Livingston High School and proudly graduated with the Class of 1977. Following her studies, she embarked on a fulfilling career as a cook. Her culinary skills delighted both friends and family alike as she shared her delicious creations with joy and generosity. Faith played a central role in Dorris' life. She was an active member of the Youngblood Memorial Fellowship Holiness Church in Livingston, where she found solace and community. It was in this community that she formed deep connections with fellow churchgoers who became cherished friends over the years. Family held a special place in Dorris' heart. She was born to Mrs. Nina Mae Holmes Miles and Mr. John Henry Miles Sr. , both of whom preceded her in death. Dorris' memory will forever be treasured by her surviving loved ones: her husband Eugene McGowen; her sisters Reva Mae LaFall; her sister Beverly Criner of Berlin, MD; her brothers John Henry Miles Jr. (Ruby) of Conroe, Texas; Clarence Miles (Benita) of Livingston, Texas; James Miles (Lena) of Houston, Texas; Rev. Andre Miles of Houston, Texas; Rev. Stacey Miles of Houston, Texas; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends. Dorris' kind soul touched the lives of many throughout her journey. Her impact extended beyond immediate family to include Tom Davis – someone who deeply enriched her life as a special friend. Dorris also leaves behind cherished memories for her niece Lovie Criner and nephew Desmond Miles, who will forever hold her in their hearts. A Funeral Service to celebrate Dorris Marie McGowen's life will be held on July 13, 2023, at the Youngblood Memorial Fellowship Holiness Church located at 1100 Colita Street, Livingston, Texas. The service will commence at 11:00 AM, with visitation starting an hour before. Dorris will be laid to rest following the service. Friends, family, and all whose lives she touched are welcome to attend this final tribute to honor a remarkable woman.
