Elizabeth Long

Age - 86

November 25, 2023

Mrs. Elizabeth Long, 86, of Jefferson City, Missouri, died on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Jefferson City Manor Care Center. The third daughter of Lusby West and Eleanor M. (Colson) Greenwood, she was born on Monday, May 3, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois. Elizabeth was a 1955 graduate of Austin High School in Chicago. In May 1956, she was employed at the original Sears Roebuck and Company Tower Store, Auditing Department, until June 1968. On Friday, June 21, 1968, Elizabeth was united in marriage to Roger L. Long in Evanston, Illinois. They were blessed with two children. Elizabeth's most beautiful experience was delivering both of their children all by herself with the use of one hand. The family lived in seven states, several cities in each, before coming to Jefferson City in June 1990. During her years at Sears Roebuck and Company, Elizabeth was on the Sears Women's Bowling League. Some of her greatest accomplishments in life were working her very first job full time at Sears Roebuck and Company for over 12 years without ever missing a day, being late, or taking any paid sick day off. Even on the day Chicago had 24 inches of snowfall overnight in 1967, she made it to work on time that morning. Elizabeth was employed full time for the Salvation Army. A few years later, she became a volunteer for which she served for many years. She was recognized on KRCG-TV as "A Person You Should Know" in 1996 and again in 2004, along with several newspaper articles for her dedication to helping others. She was a Salvation Army Corps member and Missouri East Walk to Emmaus member. She also served as Secretary of the Young Men Christian Association's New Horizon Travel Club. She was an avid square dancer and served as Treasurer of the Guys and Dolls Square Dance Group where she participated in an all-night marathon. She was an official greeter of the Highlander Church Group, on the staff of Erie Neighborhood House, and was a mentor to under privileged children, helping them with school work and playing indoor games. Elizabeth's enjoyment was found in writing poems, short stories, drawing, and designing and sewing many of her outfits. Most of all Elizabeth loved to listen to Gospel music as praises to the Lord for all He had done for her. She attended First Baptist Church in Jefferson City since June 1997. She is survived by daughter, Luanne (Paul) Yarnell of Centertown, Missouri; daughter, Kathleen (Travis) Bretton of Boise, Idaho; granddaughters, Bethany Yarnell, Kristin Yarnell, and Elise Bretton; grandson, Ian Bretton; great-grandchildren, Liam and Jaxson Rapier, Maverick and Rylee Farris, and one due December 2023; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger L. Long on June 15, 2001; father, Lusby W. Greenwood on April 12, 1964; and mother, Eleanor Greenwood on September 30, 1969. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Eleanor Schweiger and Gloria Fenton and their husbands, Frank Schweiger and James Fenton. Friends will be received from 4:00 p. m. - 7:00 p. m. on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 10:00 a. m. at First Baptist Church, Jefferson City. Elizabeth will be laid to rest at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens directly following the funeral service. Arrangements are under the direction of HOUSER-MILLARD Funeral Directors, 2613 West Main Street, Jefferson City, Missouri 65109 (573) 636-3838.
