Waterdown, ON

On 3 October 2023, Rev. John Gerrit Groen was taken from our midst at the age of 93 at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga following complications from a hip-fracture. He was a devoted husband, father, pastor and tireless evangelist in the Christian Reformed Church (CRC). John's wife of 66 years, Nel Groen passed away on 6 April 2022 and was sorely missed. John is survived by children Pauline (Kevin Lee), James (Annette Van Geest), and grandchildren Kaia, Jensen, Mitchell, Jason and Holden. His brothers and sisters are: +Clarence Groen (+Anne Canrinus), +Paul Groen (+Ma Visser), Henry Groen (+Anne Boer, +Trace Prins), Marie Groen (Steve Elgersma), Jerry Groen (Tena Spoelstra), +Joe Groen (Betty Fennema). John was brother-in-law to +Annie Slot (Gordon Kraayenbrink), +Jantine Slot (+Klaas van Hulst), Ali Slot (Piet Koedijk), +Piet Slot (+Ankie Glas), Jan Willem Slot (Nel van Wijk) and +Hanneke Slot (Reimer Bekius). He was uncle to dozens of nephews and nieces in Canada and the Netherlands. John was born in 1930 to Gerrit and Elizabeth (Van Hooidonk) Groen, a market gardening family from Broek Op Langen Dijk, North Netherlands. The third of seven children, John was confident, hard-working and from an early age had the courage of his convictions. His confidence was nurtured by his mother who, despite a busy household and an austere upbringing as an orphan, doted on "Jan" and mitigated war-time deprivations with her role-modelling strength and focus. Early leadership in youth groups and the completion of a B. Ed. in Alkmaar were followed by family emigration to Copetown, Ontario in 1950. Before his untimely death at 57 from a brain hemorrhage, John's loving and good-natured father Gerrit encouraged John to leave the just bought 100-acre farm and enroll in Calvin Seminary in Grand Rapids. John never forgot this family sacrifice. His commitment to theological studies was total. He was active in the "Groen Van Prinsterer Students Club" that championed a more Reformational worldview at Calvin, and he later served on the Board of Trustees and on Synodical committees. Following graduation in 1957, he completed an M. A. in Theology on scholarship at the Free University, Amsterdam. Then, in a slice of good fortune, he married Nell Slot, his grade-school classmate, following an extended long-distance courtship. Nell was the love of John's life. Her warm personality and shared history made for a perfect combination; together thousands of house calls were performed in their ministry to the pleasure of congregants. In turn, John's work-ethic and care for others earned Nell's respect. Despite relocations and robust work-loads, John was a loving husband and father. Active meal-time discussions, horseplay in backyards half-converted into vegetable gardens, weekly hikes and swims, board-games and annual camping pilgrimages with children and grand-children, sustained into his 80's, were family touchstones. John was generous and supportive of his children Pauline and James, their spouses and his grandchildren. John served in seven CRC congregations including Wallaceburg, Ontario (1959-64); Kentville, Nova Scotia (1964-68); Owen Sound, Ontario (1968-71); Mexico City (1971-74); Aldershot/Waterdown, Ontario (1974-80); Burnaby, British Colombia (1980-90); Kingston, Ontario (1990-95). Key milestones included: early promotion of Dutch immigration to Nova Scotia and the construction of Christian schools; attending to the sick, widowed and needy; and an energetic, biblically-focused teaching style of exhortation calibrated for new Christians. Anticipating the impact of secular trends, John came to believe that Reformed theology should reflect a greater appreciation for the Holy Spirit and enthusiasm for outreach, personal prayer and inspired praise and worship. The CRC Board of Foreign Missions sponsored his deployment as a theology instructor in Mexico City; his seminary students nick-named him "senior crunch" for his towering, direct instruction, in Spanish. His years in Latin America, where the spiritual cries of people were often openly presented, was a turning point in his Ministry. The congregations John served generally flourished in membership. New churches were constructed in Waterdown CRC and in particular Burnaby CRC where church-community outreach transformed many lives. John and Nell were called on well into their 70's to serve as interim pastor-team in Wallaceburg, Ontario; Victoria, British Colombia; Faith Burlington, Ontario and New Street Burlington, Ontario before finally retiring to Holland Homes in Brampton, Ontario. Later years focused on corresponding with inmates through the Prison Fellowship Canada program until his mind began to fail him. John touched the lives of hundreds of people from all walks of life. Over the course of a well-lived life, he earned the respect and appreciation of many for his courage, leadership and humanity. When confronted with the choice between expediency or his convictions, John was prepared to pay the price. He is loved and admired by family, who take comfort in knowing that his pain is over and he is with his Savior. A viewing and visitation for John will be held at BETHEL CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH from 9:30-10:30 am on 14 October 2023. Pastor Shawn Brix, John's co-pastor and CRC Canadian Church Relations Liaison, will lead the funeral service from 10:30-11:45. A luncheon/reception will be held in from 12:00-1:30 p. m. in the Fellowship Hall. The Graveside Memorial for interment will be held at Burlington Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p. m.

Walter Joseph Moon, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully and far too soon on November 29, 2023 at the age of 48 in Barrie, Ontario. Walter was born in Burlington on December 5,1974, to loving parents Bryan and Dorothy Moon. He was a devoted brother to his siblings Wesley (Shannon), Sharon, and Emily (Kris Lawler). Much-adored Uncle Wally to Georgia, Emmett and Albert. Walter was fortunate to have a far-reaching group of friends, notably in Muskoka, Barrie and southern Ontario, many of whom had the opportunity to visit him in his final days. Walter lived a full life. He enjoyed the outdoors, including many years in Muskoka in the hospitality industry with many dear friends and in close proximity to Nine Mile Lake, where he cottaged his entire life. Hunt camp at the cottage with his Dad was an annual favourite. In recent years, he relocated to Barrie and found peace in a regular routine with work-life balance while still being close to family and friends. A lover of all things culinary like his Mom, Walter was not just a foodie but found joy in cooking, creating memorable meals that were often enjoyed with a great glass of wine. As a passionate Euchre player, Walter's competitive spirit was matched by his contagious laughter, and very possibly, cheating. Friends and family often gathered around the table at Moon Bay, sharing memorable evenings filled with friendly banter (trash talk) and heaps of fun. Outdoors, Walter relished moments spent with his faithful dog companion, Reggie. Whether a casual stroll around the neighbourhood, a waterfront hike, or just lounging, he found a unique sense of contentment in these shared activities. Walter devoted much of his life to nurturing his friendships, whether it be through his treasured weekly darts league, many active group chats, nights out or trivia games, he cherished his time spent with his wide circle of friends. We remember Walter as a devoted family member and friend. We are comforted knowing that Walter lived a life filled with love, laughter, and a profound impact on the people around him. His memory will live on in all the laughs we shared, the meals we enjoyed, and the fun we had together. Let us carry this forward in our hearts as we commemorate his beautiful life. Friends and relatives may visit with the family at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N. , Waterdown, on Sunday, December 3, 2023 from 1-3 p. m. with a Memorial Service to follow at 3 p. m. with Rev. Thomas Sawyer

Thomas Sawyer

Age - 87

November 30, 2023

Thomas Gladwin Sawyer died peacefully at home in Flamborough Township in the same house he and his wife Nancy purchased 53 years ago. He loved their country home and property and wanted to spend his final days there. He got his wish surrounded by his loving family on November 26, 2023. Tom was born on a farm near Science Hill in Fullerton Township on September 26th, 1936. His knowledge of farming grew during his youth and led to him going to the University of Guelph for the diploma in agriculture program. Once he had completed the diploma, he had a professor who suggested Tom had what it took to enroll in the crop science degree program. Tom graduated from O. A. C. in 1964 thoroughly enjoying his years at the U of G. Tom was active in several varsity sports and was inducted into the Gryphon Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 for football, hockey, and rugby. In 1997 Tom received the Alumni Volunteer Award for his contributions to Ontario agriculture and the university. By far, Tom's happiest memory of his time at Guelph was meeting the love his life, his wife Nancy. They were wed in July 1964. Tom's working career had several phases. He first worked for Fisons and this led to Tom and Nancy living in Burlington, London, and Calgary. They moved back to Ontario, and he spent twenty-two years working in marketing and product development for Ciba-Geigy. One of Tom's passions was to help educate farmers on safe pesticide use to decrease the possibility of pesticides contaminating ground water. He then spent ten years working for The Fertilizer Institute of Ontario. Tom was committed to the safe use of fertilizers and commonly talked about the goal of being able to feed the entire world's population. Tom 'retired' in 1999, but then joined Sylvite where he worked to introduce several new product lines for agriculture. In 2017, Tom was inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame. Tom is survived by his wife Nancy and two sons, Roy and Rob, daughter-in-law Alexis and granddaughters Stella and Beatrice. Tom was always supportive of his sons' schooling and made sure to visit them no matter where their education or careers took them. The highlight of the last fifteen years for Tom has been spending time with his granddaughters. They will fondly remember his smile, singing, dancing and big hugs. He was a consummate gentleman who always shook your hand when meeting and always looked you in the eye. He held doors for everyone, stopped to help people on the side of the road with engine problems, flat tires or stuck in the snow and always treated everyone he met with kindness and respect. Tom was a man who believed in the motto that you don't learn anything when you are talking. He would ask several questions of everyone, listen carefully and then remember all that he was told and ask about things the next time they met. Young people who initially found Tom to be a bit odd with his shaking of their hand and introducing himself as Tom Sawyer would warm to him as he asked questions, learned about their interests, and then followed up with them when he saw them next. His sons would bump into former classmates and one of their first questions was, "How is your dad?!"Tom touched so many people's lives and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that you consider donating to the Al Singleton hockey scholarship at the University of Guelph that Tom was an integral part of its creation and success.Show more
