John "Jay" Garibaldi, 77, of Scotch Plains, passed away on September 3, 2023. Born in Orange, NJ to Joseph "Bud" and Clare Garibaldi, Jay grew up in Short Hills. He attended Xavier High School in New York City and went on to graduate from Villanova University. Jay was a US Army veteran of Vietnam, receiving a Purple Heart before being honorably discharged in 1970. For all he had and eventually would go on to accomplish in life, his service to our country is what he was most proud of, second only to his family. Jay went on to play a pivotal role as partner of The Garibaldi Group, a family-owned business founded in 1919 by his grandfather. With his father, Bud, and siblings, Joseph III, Patricia, James, and Jeffrey, he successfully led the firm to become one of the preeminent family-owned real estate firms in New Jersey and around the country. Armed with incredible work ethic and business acumen, he also launched his own property management company, GRC Consulting. Jay's career in real estate spanned nearly 60 years and his accomplishments were significant. He had earned the highest respect of his peers - many of whom became dear friends - for his unwavering commitment to ethics, morals, and professionalism. Jay was philanthropic, and devoted time and energy to charities. He helped support the Children's Specialized Hospital and sat on the Board of Directors for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. He was responsible for leading/organizing many of their fundraising initiatives. A voracious golfer, he was a longtime member of Plainfield Country Club in Edison, Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, and enjoyed golfing in Naples, FL with his friends during the winter months. He is survived by his wife, Carol Arendt Garibaldi; his sons, Christian and Ryan; his daughter-in-law, Gwendolyn; his siblings, Patricia, James, and Jeffrey; and many cherished nieces and nephews. To the very end, Jay was a loving, smart, witty, and generous gentleman. He loved his magic tricks and truly found joy in making others smile and laugh. A visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave. , Fanwood on Monday, September 11th from 4-8PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church in Scotch Plains on Tuesday, September 12th at 11:00AM. Cremation will be private. Holly Walker, Cranford, died peacefully on Friday, December 1, 2023 at age 70 at the Center for Hope in Scotch Plains. She grew up in Pennsylvania and was a proud graduate of Penn State, where she received a degree in English because she loved to read and write. She loved to travel as well. The beach was her happy place, and she visited many beaches around the world. She loved to ride on boats and often went on dolphin or whale watching tours. She collected driftwood and shells at the beach, and could be found many summers at Rehoboth Beach eating Thrasher french fries. Holly had a long list of places she had visited, including but not limited to: Scotland, England, China, Cambodia, Canada, states across the U. S. , and more. She enjoyed music and went to many concerts throughout her life. Holly also had a deep faith and was an active member of her local church community. She organized numerous community service projects through the church such as blanket nights, sandwiches for the homeless, and food donation drives. She was known for her fantastic Italian wedding soup and for hosting parties for friends that became family over the years. Above all else, Holly treasured spending time with loved ones. She was the daughter of William E. and Grace Bair Walker. Her husband, Thomas Hopta, and her stepdaughter, Renata Engel, are waiting for her across the rainbow bridge, as are many family friends like Sandra Tobias. She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Hopta and Katherine Walker, as well as her new son-in-law, John Ouligian. She is also survived by her sister, Laurie W. VanTine, and her brother, Scott E. Walker. Additionally, she is survived by many family members, including, but not limited to: Kaylee Walker, Ryan Walker, Lisa Walker, Stephanie VanTine, Jaimie VanTine, Sandy Guilfoyle and family, Steve Engel and family, and numerous family and chosen family. Holly considered life, family, and friends a blessing. She was loved and will be deeply missed.Show more

Richard Tyson Olmsted was born on June 8, 1946 in Derby, Connecticut and passed away at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains, New Jersey on October 24, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. Richard spent his early childhood in his father's hometown of Conneaut, Ohio until the family moved to Chatham in 1957. After graduation from Chatham High School, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Baldwin Wallace College in Beria, Ohio. An interest in racquet sports led Richard to the love of his life, Janice Weiss Olmsted. Introduced by a mutual friend, they took up tennis together, and soon it was "love. " They met in the late seventies and were married in 1986 at Stanley Congregational Church in Chatham, and they settled in Chatham Township. Richard was a wonderful caring husband to his wife Janice and a great dad to their fur babies Murphy, Jake, and Cooper. He was not only a brother, but also a best friend to his sister Linda Olmsted. Although as teenagers they didn't always see eye to eye, as they matured so did their relationship; so much so, they could have passed for twins. In his battle with cancer, Linda was his great ally and advocate. Most of all, Richard was a strong and steady man with a kind heart and generous spirit. His parents, Richard H. Olmsted and Gladys Tyson Olmsted, who predeceased him, raised a kind, compassionate man who loved to serve his community. He was a devoted son-in-law to Lorraine and Bob Weiss, who also predeceased him. Richard was also a very special brother-in-law to Linda and Gary Taylor and beloved uncle to Stefanie, Kimberly, and Craig. Kim's husband Mark and sons Ben and Sam and Stefanie's husband Jeff and son Gavin were also very fond of Richard. Everyone found in Richard a loveable guy with a calm presence and a dry sense of humor that made you smile or laugh out loud. Richard joined BSA Troop 28 in 1957 and earned the rank of Eagle Scout, Scouting's highest youth achievement. Continuing his Scouting career as an Adult Leader with Troop 28, he excelled in many leadership positions including Scoutmaster, a role that his father held before him. He was recognized and awarded with many of Scouting's honors, including the District Award of Merit and the Council's highest award, the Silver Beaver. In his more than 65 years with Chatham's BSA Troop 28, he was a role model and mentor to hundreds of young men, guiding them on their path from adolescence to adulthood. Over many decades, the boys and adults affectionately referred to Richard as Mr. 'O'. Richard especially loved Scouting's outdoor program and he was always ready to share his knowledge, experience, and time with others. He served as a merit badge counselor, not just for Troop 28, but for other scouts in the greater community. His passion for Scouting was unparalleled! He leaves a legacy of compassion, caring, and service to others, and will be greatly missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him. As Richard's day has come to an end. . . Fred Kramps, 90, passed away peacefully at home in Scotch Plains on Sunday, October 15, 2023, with his family by his side. Born in Paderborn, Germany on March 8, 1933, he emigrated to the United States as a baby and was raised in Hempstead, Long Island and Linden, NJ before moving to Scotch Plains in 1967. Fred received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Rutgers University and was very proud to have sung as a tenor in the Rutgers Glee Club. He served as a Quartermaster in the US Army in Germany and France from 1955 to 1957, and loved telling his family stories of his time there. He was employed as a salesman for International Harvester in Linden for almost 50 years before retiring. He enjoyed his job, and he valued his relationships with his customers. Fred was a longtime member of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Trustee. He was a volunteer and Advancement Chairman with Boy Scout Troop 33 in Scotch Plains, and served as Co-President of the NJ Parents Club of the US Naval Academy. He was also a member of the Deutscher Club in Clark for many years. He will be remembered as a kind, caring, generous person who always thought of others before himself, right up to his death. Never one to complain, he was an incredibly hard worker and was always willing to help others, particularly with yard work. He loved children, especially his grandchildren, and could always be found spending time with his immediate and extended family. He will be dearly missed. Surviving are his wife of almost 62 years, Eleanor Beyer Kramps; his daughter, Heidi Kramps Fox (and her husband, Larry); his son, Commander Ronald Kramps, US Navy - Ret. (and his wife, Kelley); his sister, Marian King; and six grandchildren, Lauren, Emma, and Alex Fox, and Katie, Calvin, and Joshua Kramps. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, George King and his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Dorothy Beyer. Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave. , Fanwood, on Friday, October 20th from 4 PM to 7 PM. Funeral services will be held at the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, at the corner of LaGrande and Martine, on Saturday, October 21st at 10 AM. Interment with military honors will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.Show more

Frances DiFiglia, 94, of Monroe Twp. passed away on Monday September 18, 2023 at the Center for Hope in Scotch Plains. Frances was born and raised in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and lived in Wantagh, NY before moving to Clearbrook, Monroe Twp. in 2002. She was employed by Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. on Long Island as an administrator for 20 years until her retirement in 1994. Frances was very active in her community at Clearbrook. She was a member of the HOA board, the Italian American Club and loved tennis and staying active, gardening, exercising and Pilates. Family was most important to Frances and she enjoyed cooking for them, especially on holidays. Frances was preceded in death by her two sisters: Marion Schembri and Angelina Bianco. She is survived by her two children: Santa DiFiglia of Nutley and Peter DiFiglia and his wife Colleen of Shrewsbury, five grandchildren: Jeffrey Bunn and his wife Nicole, Michael Bunn and his wife Milana, Gabrielle Faella and her husband Sean, Lauren Plunkett and her husband Quinn and Kelly DiFiglia and three great grandchildren: Christian Bunn, Brayden Bunn and Ellis Faella. Also surviving are many extended family and friends. A funeral liturgy will be 10:00 am on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at St. James the Less RC Church - 36 Lincoln Ave. , Jamesburg, NJ 08831 followed by interment in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick.
