1937-2023 The world has lost one of its greatest. It is with heavy hearts the family of Steve Georgiev announce his passing on November 28, 2023. He finally lost his hard fought battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome and will be sorely missed and remembered by his family. Steve leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Elizabeth, his children Valery Hobson (Michael), and Steven (Lisa). He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren whom he adored : Alexander, Madeleine, and Nicholas Hobson, Jesse, Owen, Finn and Rusty Georgiev. He is predeceased by his parents Szava Georgiev, Bozsinova Natzka and his siblings Apollonia, Anthony, Anna and George. Steve emigrated from Hungary with his brother George after the revolution in 1956 as a shy 19 year old. He eventually settled in Galt and worked as a fitter welder for 26 years until he and his wife started a second career owning and operating their own private retirement home in 1988. They worked tirelessly around the clock for 21 years until retirement in 2009. Steve always considered himself a Canadian citizen but was fiercely proud of his Hungarian heritage and was a founding member of the Hungarian Canadian Kossuth Club in 1962. In his youth, Steve was a formidable soccer player and developed a lifelong passion for athletics. He was a devoted Habs fan and in addition to hockey, he loved watching soccer, tennis and the Olympics. Steve was also a wonderful story teller and could have a conversation on an array of topics : politics, economics, religion, sports, European history and his favourite topic, his homeland. Over the years, he and Elizabeth were fortunate enough to travel to different parts of the world including New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Bali, and countless cruises and trips to the Caribbean and Central and South America. As much as he enjoyed the many trips, his favourite place was always wherever his family was. Sunday evening family dinners, birthdays, trips to the cottage, summer barbeques, vacations to Florida, or just a quiet get together. This was his happy place. Steve lived simply, but he loved hard. His family was his greatest achievement and the thing he was most proud of. The family wishes to thank Dr. Martin and the oncology team at Grand River Cancer Centre as well as Dr. Hahn at Cambridge Memorial Hospital for her sensitivity and gentle care over his last days. In keeping with Steve's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral services. The family wishes to extend an invitation to join them on January 13th 2024 from 12-5pm at 31 Irvin St. Kitchener, for a celebration of life/open house. We ask you to wear your favourite sports jersey or tennis shirt and share a happy memory with us. He always had the biggest smile and peppered our lives with humour and silliness. In lieu of flowers and in Steve's honour, the family asks that you give the gift of life and make a blood donation. Steve's life was extended by several years because of the generous donations of others. We ask you pay it forward in his name.Show more

With heavy hearts we announce Chuck's passing on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at Freeport Health Centre, Kitchener in his 90th year. Beloved husband to Alice (nee Hardcastle) of 68 wonderful years. Loving father to Terry (Linda) and Bill (Margaret). Proud Papa to Brendan (Jocelyn), Trevor (Jenn), Leah (Jake), Shaina (Dean), Ben (Taryn), Aimee, Jason (Gloria), Allie (Jordan) along with his great-grandchildren: Sylis, Charlie, Theo, Kinsley, Will, Mason, Madison, Addison, Alexis, Samantha, Sawyer, Danny, River and Sunny. Predeceased by his parents Charles and Dorothy. Chuck will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his extended family and many friends. Chuck led an active and engaged life, participating in various community activities. He was a member of the Probus Club of Cambridge, the Galt Curling Club and served on the board at Trinity Anglican Church, where his contributions left a lasting impact. His commitment to giving back was evident through volunteering at Cambridge Memorial Hospital and the hours he spent at the church. After high school, he pursued a career in textiles at Dobbie industries and graduated from the Hamilton School of Technology. He spent the second half of his career at Allan Bradley until his retirement. Sports were a huge part of his life. As an athlete he played hockey, baseball, football, golf and curling. As a spectator he was a big supporter of the Blue Jays, Leafs and Raptors. And any sport his family was involved in, he was their number one fan. Chuck's love for sports extended beyond the sidelines, as he graciously shared his expertise by coaching minor ball and hockey, contributing to the development of young athletes. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends and family will be received on Monday, December 11, 2023 from 2-5 p. m. at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge (519-621-1650). A Memorial Service will be held the following day on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 2 p. m. at Trinity Anglican Church, 12 Blair Road, Cambridge. Very special thanks to the nursing and medical staff at Freeport Hospital. As expressions of sympathy, donations made in Chuck's memory to Trinity Anglican Church would be gratefully appreciated.Show more

It is with sadness, but peaceful hearts, that we announce the passing of our Mother on Sunday December 3, 2023 at Forest Heights Long Term Care in Kitchener. Mom was in her 93rd year. Mom was a kind, gentle person who was content to just sit back and listen, a dedicated and hard worker, and a good friend to many. Mom is reunited with the love of her life, her husband Neale, who passed away February 24, 2022. They had celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on September 8, 2021. She leaves behind her children Cheryl Oliva (Dennis -deceased Sept. 2018), and Brian (Nancy -deceased April 2002). Proud and loving Nana to Braden James (Rita), Amy James (Andre), Courtney (Jamie Colwell), Andrew Oliva (Cathy), Craig Oliva (Kristen), and Lauren (Matt Ferraz). Adored Nana Ruth to Steven, Brooke (deceased April 2008), and Adriane da Terra, Bryce Colwell, Armondo James, Emmett and Ryan Oliva, Hudson, Eden, and Myles Oliva, and Rowan Ferraz. Mom was born to George and Alice Smith (nee Derby). Predeceased by her brothers Glen, Bill, and sister Jean Lovejoy. She is survived by her brother Ivan (Pat), sister-in-law Marilyn (John Stubbs), and many nieces and nephews. Mom was born in Sheffield, Ontario and moved to Galt (Cambridge) when she was 8. She attended St. Andrew's Public School. When she graduated at 14, she went to work to help out her family, and worked at the Galt Wooden Heel. At the age of 34 she was offered a job by her cousin Hugh Reid to be the first employee of Reid Candy & Nut Shop. A long, dedicated employment followed, working into her 70's and helping out at Christmas when she was still able. Many reading this will remember our Mom, with the curled brown hair and lovely smile, selling you Flip Chips. Her Reid's family were very important to her and she enjoyed the good times together. Mom and Dad were members of Lincoln Avenue United until it closed in 2003, First United until amalgamation in 2017, and now Wesley United. Mom was a member of the "Harmony Unit" at Lincoln and always eager to bake for Bazaars or help at fundraising dinners. She was renowned for her pies, butter tarts, and shortbread cookies. Mom also took part in a number of Variety Shows at Lincoln singing songs that carried her through the years. In her early 80's Mom developed Alzheimer's and spent her last two years at Forest Heights. We are grateful for the care she received and the compassion shown. Through the incredible "reconciliation" work of Jenn and others, Mom and Dad were able to share a room from Sept. 2021 until Dad passed in February 2022. After 70 years of marriage this was a battle worth fighting for to keep them together. Sunday Dad got his bride back, may the dancing resume! A Celebration of Life will take place in early January 2024 at Little's Funeral Home (223 Main Street, Cambridge). More details to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mom's name to Wesley United Church, the Alzheimer's Society, or the Canadian Cancer Society.Show more
