Born May 28, 1951, beloved only son of Pauline Kittrell Christian and John Wortham Christian, Jr. As a child, Richmond was a wonderful place to live and his parents' love of travel, the arts, music, and theater provided early opportunities to see and experience the world on a broad scale. After four years at his cherished alma mater, Duke University, and celebrating his marriage at the Duke Chapel upon his graduation, he and his only true love and soul mate, Sandra, began their life's adventure in New York. Following in his father's retailing footsteps, John began his career with Bloomingdale's where international travel was part of his buying, merchandising, and eventual VP of Contemporary apparel roles. New designers like Kenzo, Willie Smith, and Liz Claiborne were starting fledgling businesses at the time. John met Liz at the Mineola, Long Island train station at the very start of her business and helped carry her "little trunks" to the Bloomingdale's trunk show venue that day. He had a keen understanding of what the women's wear market needed and what young women wanted in apparel in the 70s and 80s. He traveled across Europe, the Far East, Southeast Asia, and India to find new, unique, and special craftsman that just needed a little individual attention on their work to blossom. That overwhelming desire to see the world transcended his life. He and Sandra loved New York, however an opportunity to move to San Francisco with I. Magnin, a west-coast fine apparel chain of stores, lured them west. John rose through the ranks to become VP & General Merchandise Manager of the I. Magnin chain. After years in New York and San Francisco and the births of two children, John returned to Richmond to help run a family-owned business, Datastor, Inc. The energy, enthusiasm, and vitality John exuded for life was made even more poignant by the diagnosis of cancer at the age of 50. His approach to this early diagnosis was to attack his disease head on. New research, treatments, medication, and clinical trials were explored and utilized to the fullest. John never stopped living his life regardless of his health challenges. Running the business and chairing the American Records Storage Management Committee, while eagerly traveling to the many off the beaten path destinations he so wanted to see. . . Myanmar, Bhutan, India, Fiji, Nepal, and Thailand just to name a few, John lived every minute of the adventure as if it might be his last. His overwhelming desire to meet new, diverse people and experience their varied cultures and appreciate all that the world has to offer instilled that same love of travel and exploration in his own children. The legacy John leaves is one of pushing the boundaries, continuing the fight, living a complete and loving life filled with joy, love, and family. Who could ask for more? The world became a brighter place on January 29th, 1953, the day that Debbie Lou Alspaugh McCormick, also known as Deb, Debbie Lou, Deb Deb, Dee Dee, Lavenda, and Honey, was born. Sadly, Deb passed on November 27th, 2023, at the age of 70, after a long and happy life. She will be sorely missed. Debbie was proceeded in death by her loving parents, Kenneth and Elizabeth Alspaugh; her aunt Zellene and uncle George Rasnake, who loved her as their own; and her special Godson, Austin Staples. She is survived by her devoted husband of 36 years, Mike McCormick, and their loyal dog, Beau; her two sisters, Cindy Staples, and Wenona Williams (Keith); and her brother, Kenneth "Kenny Boo" Alspaugh (Pat); and a host of special cousins. She was a proud Godmother to Cassie Rae, Codie Liz, Cameron, and Colleen, proud Aunt to Amanda, Zachary, Carrie, Brooke, Kari, Lindsay, RJ, and proud grand Aunt to Brady, Blake, Connor, Hudson, Milo, and one in the oven!Debbie grew up in Chesterfield County and spent most of her adult life here. It was here that she was first introduced to church at a very early age. Her mother, grandmother, uncle, aunt, sisters, and cousins belonged to Seventh Day Adventist Church on Roanoke Street. As Debbie got older, she began to realize that just going to church was not enough, and she began to serve the Lord in the church after returning from college. She was a youth leader for over 25 years where she organized many VBS grand productions. She was ordained as a lady deacon, and later, she became one of the first ordained lady elders of the Adventist church. Debbie knew in her childhood years that she wanted to pursue a career in teaching, so after graduating from Meadowbrook High School, she attended Longwood College to receive her Bachelor of Education. She spent 31 years teaching where she gained many lifelong friends amongst her colleagues. Her students were so dear to her and brought her much joy throughout the years. During her retirement, Debbie most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She attended every Bullfrogs family softball game where she was our devoted cheerleader; everyone knew she had arrived at the field when we heard her famous call. She also attended every sporting event that her nieces and nephews played in throughout the years. She was an enthusiastic Gamecocks football and VCU basketball fan; she would cheer with excitement with every win. Our beloved Debbie never met a stranger and made everyone she met a friend; to know her was to love her, and to meet her was to be loved. Those who knew her described her as pure love, life, and sunshine; a bright light from above. Her goofy, fun-loving, joyful spirit made us laugh, made us cry, and made us whole. Debbie was the cornerstone of our family, and we will cherish her in our hearts until she greets us with the Lord in Heaven. Amen, sweet Deb, Amen.
