Byers, John Irvin, age 87, of Oakland, on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Born in Teaneck and raised in Hasbrouck Heights, John had lived most of his life in northern New Jersey and Texas. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War. After his service, John worked as a computer programmer for CPC International in Englewood Cliffs. John was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Byers (2022). Loving father of John Byers and his wife Pamela of Texas and Michael Byers of Georgia. Dear brother of Maryann, Eleanor, Monica, Michael and David. John is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1pm on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa. A funeral mass will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Michael Winston McCarthy, 59, of Hawthorne, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023. Michael was born on July 17, 1964, in Bogota, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Shirley McCarthy and brothers Paul McCarthy Jr. , Gregory McCarthy and Charles McCarthy and sister Frances McCarthy. Michael is survived by his sisters Peggy (Peter) Lawton, Kathleen (Barry) O'Daniels, sister in law Susan McCarthy, and his brother John (Jody) McCarthy; nieces and nephews Cindy, Michael (Doris), Dana, Brett, Mark (Marleni), Tara (Andre), Tiffany (Ian), Amber (Dave), Patrick, Matthew, Allison, Billy (Diana), Shannon; and great nieces and nephews, Michael Jr. , Andrew, Sean, Daniel (Magen), Heather, Kimberlin (James), Sam, Scott, Brett Anthony, Madison, Zoe, Olivia, Juliana, Paloma, Jack, Grace, Cheyenne (Jens), Samantha, Carson, Jonathan, Charley, and Brady. He is also survived by his close friend Carol Rabel. Michael worked in the Ridgewood and Maywood school systems as a custodian and loved his job, the staff and the children. He was an avid sports fan, and could talk for hours about his Cornhuskers, Miami Dolphins or the Bundesliga. Michael cherished his family above all else and was affectionally known as Big Show to those who loved him most. Acri, Francesco Ferdinando, age 88, of Hawthorne, NJ. Born in the Province of Cosenza in Calabria, Italy, Francesco served in the military in Italy. He studied the trade of tailoring in Italy. He met his wife, Angelina, and they married in September of 1958. He immigrated to the United States in 1961. He started his family in Saddle Brook, NJ and then moved to Paterson for a few years. Francesco later moved to Hawthorne where he lived for over 50 years and was a parishioner of St. Anthony's Church there. He started working as a tailor in a men's suit store in Totowa then worked as a tailor for Ornbach's and later Macy's in Paramus. After retiring from Macy's, he cared for his wife. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed being outdoors, nature, planting and gardening. Beloved husband of the late Angelina (nee: Signoretti) Acri. Devoted father of Norina Gorga and her husband Biagio of Midland Park and Marianna Acri and her fiance John Mattina of Hawthorne. Loving grandfather of Joseph Veturio Gorga and Gabriella Rose Maoli. Dearest brother of Lisuccia Ameruso and her late husband Francesco of Calabria, Italy, Franceschina Aloia and her husband Ferdinanado of Calabria, Italy, the late Arnaldo Acri and his wife Francesca of Calabria, Italy, and the late Giuseppe Acri of Calabria, Italy. Brother-in-law of James Conklin and his wife Phyllis Conklin of Haledon and the late Maria Richmond. Dear uncle to many nieces and nephews. Kuiken, Richard Herman, age 84, of Pompton Plains, was welcomed into the loving arms of his Lord for eternity, receiving the eternal peace and reward on Friday, November 3, 2023. He will be separated from those who love him only by time. Born in Fair Lawn, Richard had resided in Glen Rock. He later resided in Wyckoff and then Franklin Lakes before moving to Pompton Plains. Richard was a member of the Pompton Plains Reformed Bible Church, and longtime member of Faith Community Church in Wyckoff, serving as elder and deacon. After attending Calvin College and William Paterson University, he was employed by the F. W. Woolworth Company, New York City and later was President of the Ben Franklin Store in Pompton Lakes. After retiring, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Christian Health Care Center Foundation, and the Holland Christian Home foundation serving as its Executive Director for 15 years. Richard was also a Life Member of the Wyckoff Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Richard H. Kuiken was the beloved husband of Ruth (nee Huizing) Kuiken of Pompton Plains. Loving father of Vernon Kuiken and his wife Linda of Bloomingdale, Vonda Sosnovik and her husband Ray of Blairstown, and Gretchen Leegwater and her husband Bart of Wyckoff. Dear grandfather of Andrew Kuiken and his wife Serena, Joshua Kuiken and his wife Nicollette, Richard Kuiken and his wife Alyssa, Grace Curcio and her husband Christian, Seth Abma and his wife Rebecca, Taylor Nobel and her husband Harry, McKenna Pennypacker and her husband Jason, Hunter Leegwater and his wife Renee, and Chase Leegwater. We enter this life with a cry for air and we leave this life with one last breath. So is the circle of time. It is what we do between those breaths that determines the legacy we will leave behind. Frank L. Gaccione took his first breath on April 14, 1960. Born to Frank W. and Camille (nee Perrelli) Gaccione, his story began in Belleville, New Jersey. Frank grew up in Nutley causing havoc and getting into trouble with all his siblings. Frank met his wife Mina at Bamburgers, where they both worked as sales managers. They began as friends who bonded over after work drinks at Casa Maria's. In 1987, they were married and settled in Hawthorne before moving to Wayne in 1992 where they decided to raise their family. They were blessed with two children, Daniella and Frank, who were the pride and joy of his life. Frank had a long career in sales and consumer electronics, most recently as the Vice President of Sales for Selectron Solutions. He truly enjoyed being around people and loved working parties at Michael's Riverside. You could always find Frank outside, perfecting the landscaping and blasting music. He especially loved The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen attending his 54th concert of his this summer. He was a huge fan of the New York Yankees and New York Jets and enjoyed tailgating and attending games. Frank's love of sports and music was only surpassed by his love of family. Frank will be remembered for his sharp wit and his way of making everyone he met feel like family. He loved his trips to Aruba and lived for his summers spent at Seapointe surrounded by family and friends. He lost his battle with brain cancer on October 29, 2023. He leaves behind a large family, including his beloved wife Mina (nee Di Ienno) Gaccione, children Daniella Gaccione and Frank J. Gaccione, mother Camille (nee Perrelli) Gaccione, and siblings Thomas Gaccione and his wife Vicki, Steven Gaccione and his wife Rosanne, Daniel Gaccione, Michael Gaccione and his wife Alisa, and Kimberly Liotti and her husband Gennaro. He is also survived by his future son-in-law Christopher DiLonardo, several dear nieces and nephews, and a plethora of friends. Funeral will depart at 10:00am on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne for a 10:30am funeral mass at St. Anthony's R. C. Josef Kern, nicknamed Sepp, age 86, of Hawthorne passed peacefully from this life into the loving arms of our Lord, on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. Born in Feldkirchen, Germany, Josef grew up in Munich, immigrating to the United States in 1957, living in Paterson. In 1964, he became a resident of Hawthorne. An auto mechanic, Josef studied mechanics in Munich. After coming to the US, he worked for Gensinger Motors, Inc. and later Chnapko, Inc. where he received his certificate as shop foreman in 1965. He started his own business, known as Kern Auto Repair, first on North 8th Street and later on Wagaraw Road in Hawthorne where he was well known as the Volkswagen specialist. He was also a landlord owning several properties in Hawthorne. Josef was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pompton Lakes. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching soccer, tennis, and cheering for his daughter, Susan and later his grandchildren at their sporting events. Soccer was Josef's favorite sport by far as he played in Germany was a former member of the Haledon Soccer Club. Josef took his family and friends to Seaside Heights weekly in the summer in our VW van and Eva's Farm in the Catskills was always a regular vacation destination. We took a family trip to Germany and he followed with trips there to attend his class reunions. He also loved to visit his daughter and family in Florida and time with his grandchildren always made him smile. Josef Kern was the beloved husband of Erika (Patega) Kern. Loving and supportive father of Linda Fau and her husband James of Highland Lakes and Susan Kern of Hawthorne. Grandfather of Timothy Fau and his fiance Aislin Bender, Jesse Fau, and Dylan Fau and his wife Lia. Brother of Therese Manley and her husband Ira and brother-in-law Victor (husband of Inge). Predeceased by his three sisters, Lydia Huber and her husband Zeno, Josephine Mahoney and her husband, Jerome, and Inge Parastschenko. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023, at 11:00 am, meeting at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 220 Hamburg Turnpike, Pompton Lakes. Cremation will take place privately. Friends may visit with the family at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne, on Sunday, from 3:00pm - 7:00pm. Mary Teresa Rew (nee Leonard) peacefully took her last breath on July 20, 2023, at St. Joseph's University Medical Center, the same hospital where she was born and took her first breath 96 years ago. Her beloved daughter and brother were by her side. She lived a long and full life filled with friends, loyal customers, travel and many good laughs. Born to Joseph P. Leonard and Estelle M. Leonard, she grew up in Paterson, NJ, resided with her family in Glen Rock, NJ and retired to Eastham, MA. before returning to Glen Rock to be closer to her family. She was a selfless giver who loved to help others. As a nine-year-old girl, she saved her childhood best friend, Marilyn Scullion's life after being hit by a car. She was honored by The Cardinal Club of Paterson with an award dinner and presented with a gold medal symbolic of the most heroic deed performed by a school pupil during the year. She continued to help others throughout her life by regularly donating blood and volunteering for many organizations and committees for parties and events. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Grammar School, Eastside High School and St. Vincent's School of Infant Nursing. After graduation, Teresa went on to work at New Jersey Bell Telephone Company in Paterson and Ridgewood. Following her marriage to her husband, Harold C. Rew, she opened and operated The Rooster Shop Gift Shop on Rock Road in Glen Rock until her retirement approximately 20 years later. Upon retirement, she and Harold relocated to Cape Cod where she continued to live for many years after her husband's death. While on the Cape, she was very active in volunteering at The Eastham Council on Aging, St. Joan of Arc Thrift Shop, the Fireman's Thrift Shop in Orlean's, MA. and was a member of The Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary. She continued to volunteer when she returned to NJ and was a volunteer at The Valley Hospital Auxiliary in Ridgewood, NJ. Teresa was pre-deceased by her parents, her beloved husband, Harold C. Rew, former Detective Lieutenant of the Glen Rock Police Department and former Director of the Victim Witness Assistance Unit for the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, her loving son, Kevin L. Rew of River Vale, NJ, sisters, Isabella Leonard of Paterson, NJ, Rita L. Price and her husband Joe of Myrtle Beach, SC, Estelle L. Hand and her husband Tom of North Haledon, NJ and brother Joseph F. Leonard and his wife Jeanne of East Orleans, MA. Brothers and sisters-in-laws Norman and Marge Rew of CA, Roger Rew of IL, Helen Rew of AZ and Janice and John DuBois of AR. She is survived by her dedicated daughter, Carol Ann Rew of Hawthorne, NJ, brother Francis X. Leonard and his wife Patricia of Hawthorne, NJ and daughter-in-law Joann Rew of Tom's River, NJ, John Rew of AZ, and Pat Rew of IL, as well as many nieces and nephews and loving and devoted friends who were like family especially Violet Pace and Joyce Dinice. We would like to give special thanks to her aides Carmen, America, Sherry and Penny who treated her with kindness and love. We found comfort in knowing we could always count on them to take the best care of her, loving friends and family who visited, called and sent cards and gifts to her over the years. We are grateful to all of you for thinking of her, keeping her company and filling her days when we could not be with her.
