FORT WORTH - Joeene Nan Pumphrey, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 2, 2023. Funeral:12 p. m. Friday, May 19, 2023, in Greenwood Chapel, with a reception to follow. Memorials: Those desiring to honor her memory may do so with memorial contributions to University Christian Church of Fort Worth, Bible Study Fellowship, or the Alzheimer's Foundation of Fort Worth in lieu of flowers. Joeene Pumphrey was born Aug. 2, 1934, in Houston to Moselle Vandra Taylor and Joseph Henry McElroy. She graduated from high school at 16 and moved to Fort Worth with her mom and stepfather, George Pat Foley, where she attended TCU for two years. Then she went to UT Austin and graduated with a degree in education. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She married Dr. Andrew Beal Pumphrey, Jr. , in 1954 and moved to Galveston where he was in medical school. They were married almost 50 years before his death in 2004. She taught in Texas City and always valued education. She made sure that her children and grandchildren were educated and enjoyed many college tours with them. She was a devoted Christian and an active member of University Christian Church. She was also very involved in Bible Study Fellowship for 20 years and a leader for some of those years. She always wished everyone "Hugs and Blessings!" She was active in her children's schools' PTAs, Women's Medical Auxiliary, the Women's Club, Planned Parenthood, and other volunteer positions. She also loved Bah Humbug and spending time with other groups of friends. She worked as a travel agent and had a passion for travel. She would tell you that she went around the world east to west and west to east. She loved everywhere and was very informed about what she was seeing. Joeene was a positive, kind, and caring person. She loved life, her family, and her friends and especially being a Gmommy and a GiGi. She was very sweet, inspiring, and encouraging to them. She will forever be missed and loved but her faith, grace, kindness, and life will live on comforting and inspiring all those who knew her. She also loved OPC (Other People's Cooking) and eating at restaurants, especially at the Vietti home and the Greek House. Survivors: Children, Priscilla Bennett and Steve, Kaye Beth Vietti and Don, Laura Baird and Bruce, and Andrew Beal Pumphrey III; grandchildren, Matthew and Agu Bennett, Buck and Dani Bennett, Alex Vietti, Katelyn and Devin Helsel, Hunter and Lindsey Baird, Margaret and Doug Lynn, Reason and Heather Pumphrey, and George Pumphrey; great-grandchildren, Adele Baird, Harrison Baird, Tilly Bennett, Jack Bennett, Wesley Bennett, James Pumphrey; and siblings: Elaine Greer, Mac McElroy and Pat, Mike Foley and Michelle; also, deep appreciation for Dr. Allan Kelly for his loving care.
