Jerry Franklin Welborn, 78, of Nacogdoches, TX passed away on Dec. 1, 2023. Born on May 7,1945 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Walter and Sadie Welborn, our world received a blessing - aka - "Bernie". After joining the United States Air Force June 1965, Jerry proudly served his country for 3 1/2 years in the 4442nd Field Maintenance Squadron. Jerry was Honorably discharged and then started his career in communications. Jerry began working with Lockheed Martin Corporation and ended his career with Able Communications, a company he and his partner, Edmond Mallet, started together after moving to Pearland, Texas in 1984. Jerry and Ed worked together for 35 years. Jerry received the United States of America Federal Communications Commission lifetime general radiotelephone operation license while running his company in Pearland. During his time in Pearland, Jerry met his wife Patty, and they were married on June 7, 1991. He was active in the Pearland Lions Club, serving as President for several years, heading the annual turkey shoot, and earning a Lifetime Membership in the Lions Camp of Texas. In 2008 Able Communications was sold and Ed and Jerry retired. At the time, Jerry and Patty lived on a canal off the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston County. Jerry's retirement plans were to be free to run his boat through the Bayou Vista canals and Bay of Galveston, fish all the time, and just relax on the water. However, when Hurricane Ike, a few months after he retired in 2008, destroyed their house in Bayou Vista, the Welborn's decided to repair the house, sell it, and move to Nacogdoches, where they had a hunting lease and had been going since 1992. Jerry spent his last eleven years in Nacogdoches, the piney woods of East Texas, naming their place "Sun n' Pines" ranch. Here Jerry kept busy working on countless projects (managing to finish two or three of them), hosting numerous friends, organizing annual "Opening Weekend" deer hunts, and throwing legendary New Year's Eve parties - all the while taking in any cat that came up to their place needing a new home and loved every minute spent there. Over the last 6 years, Jerry became deeply involved with Christ Episcopal Church where he was confirmed in his faith for Christ. At the time he was called home to the Lord, Jerry was serving on the Vestry as Junior Warden, the Altar Flower ministry, the mobile ministry, and most importantly, the Audio ministry plus volunteering for "Love in the Name of Christ", a local organization helping people in need in Nacogdoches County, For reasons we cannot understand, Jerry was taken from us far too soon. On that day, the world lost an amazing human being while Heaven received an awesome husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, and mentor.
