Rockport, MA

We can safely say that Joanne Gage Collins was the kindest human being we have ever known. She was a spring of forgiveness, always believing the best of people with never a mean word for anybody. But she was also a strong person. She would stand up for what she felt was right, and defend those she thought unjustly disparaged. She loved others generously and fiercely. She was born and raised in Rhinebeck, NY, daughter of a Baptist minister and a teacher. As a young woman she attended Gordon College in Wenham MA, where she met her soon to be husband, William Francis Collins III. Joanne's father officiated the ceremony himself in the chapel on campus. After living in various apartments around New England, in 1981 they settled in a house in West Gloucester. They had three children: William IV, Dylan and Daphne, all three of whom are artists. Joanne was also the closest friend of Olivia Giles Collins, Bill's mother, who lived with them for thirteen years. The two shared the same birthday, and loved to celebrate together in style. Among the many jobs she had in life, Joanne worked for years in the music department at Gordon College, while her husband Bill spent most of his long career working as a Video Engineer and Engineering Manager in cable television. Joanne's work in the music department touched the lives of many college students, who found her an approachable guide and sympathetic ear during their challenging studies. They were both extremely active in their church, the Union Congregational Church in Magnolia. Joanne loved to volunteer for Vacation Bible School, helping kids do arts & crafts projects and creating costumes for the Bible plays. Joanne died early Saturday at the Seacoast Nursing facility in Gloucester. She had been suffering for several years from vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In lieu of flowers, Joanne's family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz. org. She is survived by her husband Bill, her three children, five wonderful grandchildren, and her sister Sharon and extended family. There will be a memorial service for Joanne open to the public on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at 11:00 am at Union Congregational Church in Magnolia, 3 Norman Ave. , Magnolia MA. 01930Arrangements by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. William Breen

William Breen

Age - 69

November 18, 2023

Bill grew up in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, where he dreamed of mountains and open skies. As a teen, he made his way to Wyoming, spending summers on a ranch wrestling calves, hoisting hay bales, and falling asleep to Hank Williams. Bill met his future wife, Lise, at Colorado College. Throughout their lives, they joyfully explored mountain ranges and distant cities. They traveled to India for several months in 1979, and on return, Bill exhibited his captivating photographs of Ladakh's people and landscapes at New York's Explorers Club. Bill then spent two years studying literature, receiving a post-bac degree from Trinity College Dublin and a Master's degree with honors from University College Dublin, enjoying Irish music sessions along the way. Bill began his journalism career in Brooklyn, freelancing for major news organizations covering topics as diverse as poverty, politics, and rock and roll. He won the Roger Star Journalism award for his work on housing. During these years, he relished teaching journalism students at the City University of New York. He landed in Gloucester in 1991 as the editor of the start-up environmental magazine Garbage, where he challenged conventional eco-wisdom with new research and wry humor. Lise and Bill made their home overlooking a quarry, at the wood's edge, always listening for owl calls and snowfall, and imparting a sense of wonder to their two children. Throughout his life, Bill found solace when returning to his Sebec Lake cabin, hiking mountain ridgelines, slamming his bike over rocky trails, and skiing through frozen woods. In 1995, he joined Fast Company magazine as the founding senior editor. For twelve years, he developed and edited major sections of the magazine. On his watch, it won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1999. His articles and issues on innovation, leadership, creativity, and design were widely shared. Sought after as a public speaker, he captured the attention of NASA scientists as well as business gurus and community leaders. A recent tribute to Bill was published by Fast Company. Bill took the lead authoring award-winning business books, including The Future of Management with Gary Hamel; The Responsibility Revolution with Jeffrey Hollender; and Brick by Brick: How Lego Rewrote the Rules of Innovation. In 2016, he joined The Bridgespan Group, a leading social impact advisor, to advance research around breaking cycles of poverty and impelling upward economic mobility. Committed to its mission, he traveled as far as Mumbai, Rwanda, Mississippi, and the Texas panhandle to illustrate how these varied communities confront challenges to build better lives. His work was published in The Atlantic, TIME, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and Harvard Business Review. Admired by peers as a brilliant writer and editor, Bill was well-loved for his unassuming and easy demeanor, and great good humor. Between interviewing and writing, Bill delighted in family adventures, backpacking Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National Park in 2021 with his children and rambling among the giant redwoods and the Lost Coast with Lise in 2023. Weeks before his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2022, he completed skiing Vermont's Catamount Trail. Afterwards, he hiked Utah's canyons with family and swam in Ipswich Bay. Bill faced his health challenges with grace and grit, astounding his medical team. His life cut too short, he is survived by his beloved Lise, their treasured children Leah and Aidan Breen and son-in-law Raja Hamid, his brothers Tim and Ken Breen, mother-in-law Enid Michelman, and brothers-in-law Doug and Tom Michelman, their families, and the extended families. Bill is terribly missed by a wide circle of relatives, friends, and colleagues who cherished his warmth, kindness, humor, intellect, and adventurous spirit. Bill's legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the lessons he imparted (lately quipping "enjoy every sandwich"), and the memories we created. The day before he died, under Boston's golden-leaf trees, he recited Patrick Kavanagh's poem, October: "O leafy yellowness you create for me / A world that was and now is poised above time / I do not need to puzzle out Eternity. "A private celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Vermont's Catamount Trail Association or to Rwandan communities via Spark Microgrants.
