"Judith L. (Picard) Hiemstra, age 84, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023 while surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 15, 1939 to Howard and Opal (Lount) Jessup in Muskegon, MI, where she remained a lifelong resident. Judy graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central High School in 1957, marrying Bob Ross shortly after. Together they had 4 children before ultimately divorcing in 1967. Judy became a dedicated employee of General Telephone, where she thrived in radio sales for 20 years. She married Richard "Dick" Picard on January 12, 1968, with whom she shared nearly 30 years of love and laughter, with Richard preceding her in death on December 23, 1997. Judy then married Robert "Bob" Hiemstra on December 12, 1998. Together they cherished 24 years of loving companionship in their golden years. Judy's strong faith was inspired by her grandmother and applied throughout her life as a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, where she was an active contributor to the Guild, and later as a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Judy loved to give handmade gifts to friends and family; she had a knack for arts and crafts, including ceramics and knitting, but her passion was for crocheting. She loved all things outdoors, particularly the annual camping trips she took with Bob. They spent many summers at Poncho's Pond Campground in Ludington, where Judy loved to swim. Judy will always be remembered as a well-read, sharp-witted, strong-willed, and unconditionally compassionate woman who faced every challenge head on. Her kind and loving heart was balanced with the perfect amount of stubbornness. Judy was the beloved matriarch of an enormous family, and she will be deeply missed by the many who knew and loved her. She is survived by her loving husband, Bob Hiemstra; 4 children, Dave (Shellie) Ross, Sue (Tom) Hernandez, Maribeth (Joy) Picard, and Kathy (Scott) Six; 5 step-children: Chris (Dave) Harkin, Roxanne (Jay) Laughtenschlager, Marty (Lila) Hiemstra, Tammy (Richard) Shorter and Cheryl Hiemstra; 11 grandchildren: Jason (Karen) Ross, Chad (Kara) Ross, David (Angie) Ross, Joshua (Vanessa) Hernandez, Elicia (Jake) Bourne, Melissa (Sam) Burden, Trevor Picard (Alexis Springer), Dylan Picard, Kaylee Picard (Jeremiah Dunne), Derick (Nikki) Six, and Sammie (Derek) Serritos; 7 step-grandchildren: Jeremy Sturm, Stephanie (Brian) Brown, Daniel (Lauren) Strobel, Kimberly (Devin) Cavanaugh, Amber Shorter, Ashley Shorter, and Richard Shorter Jr. ; 24 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, her youngest sister, Christine (John) Stacey, her brothers-in-law, Dan Krupp and Rod Pusman, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two of her sisters, Sandy Krupp and Nancy Pusman, her stepson, Brian Hiemstra, and her step-granddaughter, Jennifer Vanderstelt.
