Marian Kimrey

Marian Kimrey

Age - 78

November 16, 2023

"Marian Elizabeth Andrew Kimrey was born May 5, 1945. Marian passed peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on November 2, 2023. Marian was the daughter of Shirley and Sterling Andrew, wife of James Glenn Kimrey, mother of Sterling Drew Kimrey and Jessica Kimrey Recicar (husband Todd), grandmother of Sterling Drew Recicar, and cousin to Margaret (Peggy) Davis Saz. Marian was also the adopted aunt and mother to many who loved her and who she fiercely loved. At an early age, Marian gravitated to the outdoors and all the adventures that a small-town St Augustine girl could discover. Fishing, clamming, crabbing, and throwing a cast net were at the forefront of her favorite childhood memories. Her father, Sterling, was a master of making cloth cast nets, a very tedious and time-consuming craft. With that kind of patience, you can only imagine that he took great pride in teaching Marian to throw a cast net with precision. Marian shared that knowledge many times over in her lifetime with her family and friends. As a child and into her teen years, Marian lived in St. Augustine during the week with her grandmother, Jessie, while her parents operated the Matanzas Inlet Restaurant. Marian loved her days with her grandmother and other family members, but loved the weekends and summers more when she was able to go to Summer Haven to ride the beach with friends and spend her time fishing. Matanzas Inlet at Summer Haven was Marian\u0027s favorite place in the world and it was who she was to the core. She loved to tell her grandson, Sterling, stories about her childhood and all her adventures and encouraged him to do the same. Her dream was for her children and future generations to cherish this special place as much as she did. Marian attended Evelyn Hamblen Elementary School, Ketterlinus Junior High School and graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1963. After receiving her bachelor's degree in education from Florida State University, Marian attended Florida Atlantic University to receive her master's degree in education. Shortly after that she spent her 30\u0026#43; year teaching career back in her hometown of St Augustine. She taught at RB Hunt, Murray Middle School, and Gamble Rogers Middle School. Marian could not go anywhere in St. Augustine without running into a previous student. Each time those students would express their gratitude. Shortly after graduating from FSU, Marian met Jim and married. Once married, they settled into the life she had grown up with, spending their weeks in St. Augustine and their weekends and summers at Matanzas Inlet. Jim was from North Carolina and knew very little about fishing so she taught him and they passed that love of the water to their children, Drew and Jessica. Marian loved her Minorcan heritage, studying her family tree and helping other local Minorcans, young and old, to connect the dots to their own heritage. She would spend hours researching and sharing her knowledge with anyone that was interested. Jim and Marian always had a revolving door at their home. Storytelling is one of life's simple pleasures and Marian was no stranger to a long chat on the porch or in the living room. Every child should have the opportunity to hear and appreciate the kinds of stories that would be appreciated for generations. The world would be a better place if each family had a storyteller like Marian to share their memories and values with the younger generation. At Marian's request, there will be no service. "Bob was born May 28, 1936, the oldest of 3 sons, to Solomon and Gertrude (Schwartz) Gerson, in the Jewish Maternity Hospital, New York, New York. The family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Bob grew up and graduated from Central High School. He went on to college, studying optometry and graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Optometry in 1958. Immediately after graduation, he entered the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Optometry attached to the Martin Army Hospital in Fort Benning, Georgia. Bob enjoyed working with his patients, many of whom were generals and their families, and the time he spent with fellow officers as a young bachelor. After serving two years, he returned to civilian life and opened his first practice in Philadelphia. In 1966, he married his first wife, Norma McElligott. The couple thought they'd like a warmer climate and decided to take a trip, drive South, and stop where they found a home. They landed in Jacksonville, Florida, and Bob started his Florida practice near Mandarin. Bob enjoyed his Florida lifestyle; he and Norma took many cruises, they had a condominium for weekends on Crescent Beach, he played golf, and he became a pilot, flying single engine planes on weekends out of Saint Augustine airport. Flying became his passion, and he loved to talk about doing touch-and-goes. Optometry also was a passion and his practice was devoted to taking the best care of his patients. He was well known as the doctor to go to if you wanted the best care for your eyes. Bob faith always was a very important part of his life. He was an active member of the Congregation Sons of Israel in Saint Augustine, serving on the Board multiple times and leading services for many years. In 2009, Bob lost Norma after 43 years of marriage. Soon, he met Beth Slotnick who had also lost her husband and the two became friends and then partners, eventually becoming engaged. Bob and Beth spent half of every week together and you could count on his car arriving at the Sand Dollar every Friday afternoon. Bob and Beth travelled together, to China, Australia, and Europe, as well as on many cruises and trips to see family in Texas and Pennsylvania. They built a life together and Beth kept Bob young and active for 14 years. Bob continued to practice optometry, retiring in 2023 after a career that spanned 65 years. Bob was first diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2020 and did everything possible to fight the illness, with Beth by his side. After a two-year remission, cancer returned, and he passed away at Baptist South Hospice, again with Beth at his side. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Norma, and his brother Paul. He is survived by his fiance, Beth Slotnick, his stepson John McElligott (Jill), his brother Phillip Gerson (late wife Linda), and his nieces and nephews Debra Steinberg (Stuart), Jodi Gerson, Richard Gerson (Frank), Joel Gerson (Inga), Scott Gerson (Kathleen), Michelle Moissett (Andrew) and several great-nieces and great-nephews whom he adored. Bob is greatly loved by many and will be missed tremendously by the family, friends and patients whose lives he positively affected over the years. "Show more
