Greenville, SC - Joan Edens Porter, 82, died October 3, 2023 following an extended illness. Joan was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville, SC. Her faith in Jesus Christ was most dear to her, and she longed to see her Savior. Joan loved studying her Bible, as well as researching family genealogy and playing the organ. For many years, her joy was to be married to her husband Horace, and be a mother to her three boys. Her favorite advice to her boys was, "Live for Jesus and Love One Another. " For the past several years, Joan had been lovingly cared for by the staff at Shepherd's Care Assisted Living Center. Surviving are her three sons James (Stephanie) Porter of Greenville, SC (grandchildren Ashley, Laura, and Emily); Michael (Susan) Porter of Carmel, IN (grandchildren Claire (Jacob) Pendleton, Caroline, and Ethan); and Stanley (Julie) Porter of New Palestine, IN (grandchildren Stephanie (Cam) Estep, Justin (Natalie) Porter (great-grandchild Charlotte)). A brief service will be held graveside at 9:30 a. m. Tuesday, October 10, 2023 in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC, Section V. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 3810 Grandview Drive, Simpsonville, SC 29680. Joan Bailey McElrath Hellar, 91, passed away on December 3, 2023, after a recent illness. She was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, and friend, and was loved and admired by many. She spent much of her life in Greenville, SC, graduated from Greenville High School, and received her R. N. from Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing. She reared four children with her husband of 42 years, Dr. James T. McElrath, MD, who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a son, Robert J. McElrath, and a grandson, James Benson "Ben" Griffin. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, C. Albert Hellar of Inman, SC and her twin brother, Dr. George O. Bailey, MD of Anderson, SC. In addition, she is survived by daughters, Helen M. Griffin of Newberry, SC, Beth M. Mitcheltree of Simpsonville, SC, Anna R. McElrath of Greenville,SC and daughter-in-law, Crela L. McElrath of Taylors. She is also survived by grandchildren Leslie M. Hoffman (husband, Brent) of Greenville; Erin M. Roach (husband, Jared) of Nashville, TN, Bradley McElrath (wife, Maria) of Eugene, OR, and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mackey Funerals and Cremations, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC, where visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2023. The funeral service will be at 1:30 pm on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Washington Baptist Church, 3500 SC Highway 14, Greer, SC. Private burial will follow. Born in Anderson County, SC, he was the son of the late Gould and Daisy Dean Patterson, and was the youngest of their twelve children. A longtime member of Flat Rock Baptist Church in Liberty, SC, Dennis actively served in various church capacities, reflecting his commitment to faith and community. His devotion to Joyce was unwavering throughout their 63-year marriage, until her death in July of last year. They were an inseparable pair whose unity was a testament to enduring love. They shared a bond that transcended time, a true partnership cherished by all who knew them. Education was his passion and he pursued it diligently, earning a bachelor's degree from Furman University and a master's degree from Clemson University. His career as a Football and Track Coach at Liberty, Pendleton, and T. L. Hanna High School spanned years of dedication and influence. He measured his success not by wins or losses, but how his students succeeded in life. Fondly known as "Coach," Dennis's athletic achievements left a permanent mark on his players, his family, and friends. His records in Track and Field and Cross Country at Furman University earned him a well-deserved place in the Athletic Hall of Fame. Similarly, his contributions were honored in the Athletic Hall of Fame at Liberty and T. L. Hanna High School, reflecting the lasting impact he made. Above all, he was an outstanding father to his sons, Pepa to his grandchildren, and mentor to many. His infectious smile and wonderful sense of humor will forever be remembered. His legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will carry on through his loved ones and the generations to come. He is survived by sons, Bobby Patterson (Teresa), Scott Patterson, and Gene Patterson (Sabrina); grandchildren, Christopher, Jordan (Joe), Molly, Graden, Henry, Rosie, Kaitlyn, Taylor (Will), and Alexis (Tyler). great grandchildren, Teagun and Griffin; and two great grandsons on the way, Stephen and Charlie. In addition to his loving wife and parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Clayton, Russell, Hoyt, Cecil, Dink, and Hugh Patterson; and five sisters, Jessie Thompson, Mozelle Smith, Grace Chapman, Jennie Merck, and Mildred Merck. Patrick "Bo" Cleburne Fant, Jr. , a beloved father, died on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the age of 89. Born on October 2, 1934, in Greenville, he was the son of the late Patrick C. Fant, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Carnes Fant. He graduated from Greenville High School (1952) and then attended The Citadel (1956), Continue Reading x Patrick "Bo" Cleburne Fant Jr. October 2, 1934 - December 1, 2023 Patrick "Bo" Cleburne Fant, Jr. , a beloved father, died on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the age of 89. Born on October 2, 1934, in Greenville, he was the son of the late Patrick C. Fant, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Carnes Fant. He graduated from Greenville High School (1952) and then attended The Citadel (1956), where he was a member of The Summerall Guards. After graduating from The Citadel, he served in the U. S. Army. After his service Bo obtained his J. D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law (1962). After graduating from law school, Bo returned home to practice real estate law with his father at Rainey, Fant & McKay. He later founded Fant & Fant Attorneys at Law with his father, and served the Greenville community handling real estate matters, which he loved, for over 50 years. In the Spring of 2012, he attended the S. C. Bar Foundation's Nifty Fifty celebration. Bo's passion for being a lawyer was passed on to his son Patrick, and three grandchildren, making four generations of attorneys serving in the Greenville community. Bo was a member of The Kiwanis Club and The Cotillion. Bo loved his family and cherished his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "BBo". He demonstrated love and dedication to his family, who he loved unconditionally. His legacy will continue on with his loving son, Patrick Cleburne Fant, III (Jennifer); three grandchildren, Patrick Cleburne Fant, IV, Lillian Gower Fant, and James Edward Fant; niece, Mary Hodges and nephew, James Hodges (Heidi). In addition to his parents, Patrick Cleburne Fant, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Carnes Fant, Bo was preceded in death by his beloved son, Edward Gower Fant; wife, Audrey Goodwin Fant; sister, Susanne Hodges and husband, Friday; and the mother of his children, Sarah "Sally" Gower Lowe Fant. Bo always showed a grateful spirit to those who cared for him. The family wishes to thank Beth Walker and Wells Hamby, who walked alongside the family during their care for Bo in his last few years. The family is especially grateful for the care provided through Pruitt Palliative Care and McCall Hospice Home. Bo's family rejoices in his resurrection and is grateful to our Heavenly Father for the life they shared with him. She was blessed with the gift of hospitality and had a special way of making everyone feel loved and important. What a testimony and legacy she has provided for all who knew and loved her! She is survived by sons, Terry W. McJunkin and Rex L. McJunkin (Jackie); grandchildren, Scott McJunkin (Rene), Christopher McJunkin (April), Tonya Johnson (Brent); seven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. She was the last surviving member of her family. A Visitation will be held Thursday, December 7, 2023, from 11:00 a. m. until 11:45 a. m. at Oak Pointe Church, 8649 Augusta Road, Pelzer, SC 29669, followed by the Funeral Service at 12:00 p. m. Burial will be in Greenville Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oak Pointe Church, Building Fund, 8649 Augusta Road, Pelzer, SC 29669.
