Joan B. Martin age 83 of Burr Oak, Michigan, passed away early Friday, September 8, 2023 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was born July 8, 1940 in Sherwood, Michigan daughter of the late Rodell and Genevieve (Mahieu) Irons. Joan resided in Burr Oak since 1966. Her early life was lived in Athens where she was the Salutatorian of Athens High School class of 1958. On June 13, 1959 she married Daryl Martin at the Sherwood United Methodist Church in Sherwood. He preceded her in death January 22, 1993. Most of Joan's working career was in accounts receivable. In 2006 she retired from Dometic Corporation in LaGrange, Indiana following seven years of dedicated employment. Prior to joining Dometic she worked many years at the Kirsch Company in Sturgis. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting and was a loyal fan of her Detroit Tigers. Joan loved following the many sporting events and activities of her grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters: Beth Martin of Burr Oak and Ann Martin of Colon; one son: Alan (Deanna) Martin of Colon; twin grandsons: Nathan Martin and Nicholas (his fiancee Aubrey) Martin; granddaughter: Megan Martin; great granddaughter: Ava Grace Bohm; sister: Jean Egolf of Fort Wayne, Indiana and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers: George Irons and Rodney Irons. The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 P. M. Wednesday, Sept. 13th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Joan Martin will be held at 1:00 P. M. Thursday, Sept. 14th at the funeral home. Pastor Doug Noonkester of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak. Edward Dean Layman age 75 of Burr Oak, Michigan passed away Wednesday morning November 8, 2023 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was born March 15, 1948 in Sturgis, Michigan son of the late Clifford Dean and Opal June (Criswell) Layman. Mr. Layman resided in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area for over 50 years coming from Bronson, Michigan where he was a graduate of Bronson High School with the class of 1966. On August 19, 2004 he married Amy Ilene Merrifield in Tennessee. Ed was a tool & die maker by trade. He retired from the Stryker Corporation in Kalamazoo following five years of dedicated employment. Prior to joining Stryker he had been employed by Burr Oak Tool & Gauge in Sturgis for over 30 years. He was a member of the Radiant Life Church in Sturgis and the "coffee club" at Five Lakes Coffee in Sturgis. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He had an appreciation of automobiles and loved going to car shows. He was a regular at the American Red Cross blood drives and had donated many gallons of blood over the years. His family will forever remember him in his barn fixing or making something. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Amy; daughter: Angela Layman of Portage; son: Scott (Amanda) Layman of Perry; grandchildren: Austin, Kalin and Evan; step-daughters: Deborah Recod of Sturgis and Denise Davenport of Defiance, Ohio; step-son: Darren Bowdish of Kalamazoo; four step-grandchildren; sister: Judy (Duane) Hostetler of Arizona and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2:00-6:00 P. M. Sunday, November 12th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. Steven Scott Dobberteen, Jr. age 51 of Burr Oak, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly Saturday October 14, 2023 at his home. He was born December 1, 1971 in Sturgis, Michigan son of Steven Scott and Georgia (Frye) Dobberteen. Scott resided most of his life in Burr Oak where he was a graduate of Burr Oak High School with the class of 1990. He had been employed by American Axle in Three Rivers for 10 years and was currently employed by Abbott Laboratories in Sturgis. Scott was proud to have served his country in the U. S. Navy earning the rank of Radio Seaman. Scott enjoyed volunteering his time as assistant coach with the Burr Oak football team. He had a true appreciation for the outdoors enjoying hunting and fishing. Scott was happiest when he was spoiling his grandchildren. He is survived by his children: Hunter Dobberteen or Bronson and Emily (Zachery) Brinkhoff of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren: Owen, Ella and Adaline; mother: Georgia Dobberteen of Burr Oak; brother: Melvin "Buddy" (Tiara) Dobberteen of San Antonio, Texas and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and sisters: Ann Stidham and Gretcheina Lin Myers. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. Jodi Ellen Moore, age 66, of Burr Oak, Michigan unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. She was born on September 18, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan to Gerald and Mildred (Sies) Michaeli. Jodi grew up in Madison Heights, Michigan with her parents and brothers, Todd and Jeff. She graduated from Madison High School in 1974. Jodi met Wendell Moore while working at the City of Troy. The two were married on August 23, 1981. They had their first child Lauren in 1984 and second child Trevor, in 1988. She graduated from Walsh College in 1997 with BS in Finance while working full-time with two young children. The Moore family lived in Troy for 29 years. After her retirement in the finance industry of home building companies, they built their home in Burr Oak, Michigan, where they currently reside. Once she settled into rural life, she returned back to the workforce and worked part-time in Shipshewana, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband Wendell, her children and significant others, Lauren (Gary Abbott) Moore, Trevor (Allyssa Nikkila) Moore, brothers and sisters-in-law, Todd (Angela Madden) Michaeli, and Jeff (Ann) Michaeli, nephews, and nieces. She will be greatly missed by all. Joan Irene Modert age 91 of Burr Oak, Michigan passed away Wednesday morning June 14, 2023 at the Sparrow House Adult Living in Sturgis. She was born August 17, 1931 in Bronson, Michigan daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Vaughn) Machan. Joan was a longtime resident of the Sturgis and Burr Oak area and her early life was spent in Bronson where she was a graduate of Bronson High School with the class of 1949. On December 23, 1949 she married Raymond Lewis Modert in Angola, Indiana. Following 65 years of marriage Ray preceded her in death January 3, 2015. Joan was involved with Ray in the family business of Modert Cement Products as the company bookkeeper/secretary. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. She and Ray were both involved in scouting as Cub Scout Den mother and Ray a scoutmaster. Joan took great pride in her three sons all becoming Eagle Scouts. She and Ray loved traveling and traveled to all 50 of the United States, 49 of them in their motorhome. She enjoyed 30 years of wintering in Florida, crafts, ceramics and antiquing. Mrs. Modert is survived by her three sons: James (Robin) Modert and Scott Modert both of Burr Oak and Daniel (Kathy) Modert of Port St. Lucie, Florida; grandchildren: Adam (Lindsey) Modert, Crystal (Mitch) Sahli West, Myla (Erik) Wine, Travis (Kristina) Modert and Kelli (Wayne) Harker; 18 great grandchildren; sisters: Alana (Roy) Clark of Sturgis and Marilyn (Joe) Macaluso of New Mexico and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson, one great grandson; brother: Don Machan; nephew: Denny Machan and her beloved dog: Duffy. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. Private graveside services and burial of the remains will take place at Adams Cemetery in Rural Burr Oak. Christopher James Boland age 81 of Burr Oak, Michigan passed away Friday afternoon, March 31, 2023 at the Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. He was born May 14, 1941 in Springfield, Illinois son of the late Rev. Christopher H. T. and Rachel J. (Ekre) Boland. Chris resided in Sturgis since 1969 coming from Eaton Rapids. His early life was spent in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin where he was a graduate of Port Washington, WI High School with the class of 1959. Following his graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Army serving with the 101st Airborne earning the rank of E-5. While serving in the Army it was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On December 29, 1965 he married Catherine Schirding in Petersburg, Illinois. Chris had been involved in the retail tire industry for over 50 years. His career began with Firestone Tires and he soon became the owner and operator of Town and Country Tire which was renamed Boland Tire Company. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed collecting, building and repairing clocks of all kinds and pocket watches and he also enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his wife: Catherine; daughters: Emilie (Pat) Bright and Rachel Boland both of Sturgis; son: Matthew (Victoria) Boland of Sturgis; grandchildren: Christopher (Jessica) Boland of Mendon, Emma Boland of Allendale and Ella Bright currently a student at Alma College; great grandchildren: Liam and Blake Boland; step-grandchildren: Annalissa (Oakley) Stevens, Ailaina Cholometes and Justin Cooper, Ethan (Chelsie) Bright, Lucas (Maranda) Bright; step-great grandchildren: Haven and Beckham Stevens, Tiernan, Royce and Bodee Bright; brothers: Stephen (Carol) Boland of Sturgis and John (Patricia) Boland of Elmhurst, Illinois; brother-in-law: James Mulally and a large number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Ruth Mary Mulally. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be announced. William Louis Eckler Sr. , age 57, of Burr Oak, MI passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at his home. He was born July 9, 1965 in Rochester, New York. William graduated from Westview High School in Emma, Indiana with the class of 1983 and shortly after graduating move to Sturgis, MI and began working at Burr Oak Tool & Gauge, where he has been employed for the past 39 years. In June of 1984 he married Sheri Yoder and this marriage ended in divorce. William enjoyed golfing, collecting many unique items, and was a fan of the Pittsburg Steelers and Notre Dame. Surviving are one son: William L. Eckler Jr. and one daughter: Andrea Eckler both of Shipshewana, IN; 2 grandchildren: Madison Elmore and Brentlee Elmore; and a brother: Robert Eckler. He was preceded in death by his mother: Carroll Ann Chase, his grandmother who raised him: Sylvia Langow, and one sister: Tina Eckler. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place.
