VINTON: Jim Wilson, age 69, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 6, 2023, at the Olforf Hospice House in Hiawatha, with his loving family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton, with Rev. Brian Channel officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Monday, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Memorials may be directed to the Vinton Volunteer Fire Department. Jim was born on March 27, 1954 in Vinton, the son of Ralph and Elsie (Vaupel) Wilson. Jim graduated from Washington High School in Vinton with the class of 1972. He furthered his education at Marshalltown Community College, studying auto repair. On November 8, 1975, he was united in marriage to Penny Long at the Vinton Presbyterian Church. Jim worked as a mechanic with his father-in-law Gene Long at Long's DX Gas and Service Station in Vinton. Following Gene's retirement, Jim continued to operate the business as Wilson's Petro Stop. Jim was a skilled mechanic and had built a loyal customer base through his many years in business. He very much enjoyed his profession and continued to work until a few days before his death. He was a member of the Vinton Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and a member of the Cedar Sailors. Jim loved boating and time spent outdoors. His greatest joy was time playing with his grandchildren, where he served a variety of purposes such as a horse, or a patient in a make-believe doctor's office. He was a very giving person and would always find time to visit with a friend or help in any way he could. Survivors include his wife, Penny; daughters, Jamie (Cheo) Wilson-Sierra of Albuquerque, NM, Kim (Chad) Newton of Vinton; 3 grandchildren, Sophia Newton, Annabelle Newton, and Ernesto Sierra; 2 sisters, Janice Ozias of Austin, TX, Elaine (Lyle) Bolton of Vinton; 1 brother Chuck (Pam) Wilson of Cedar Rapids; and his niece and nephews, Orin, Liz and Austin. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother-in-law Doug Ozias. Memorials may be directed to Compassus Hospice in Cedar Rapids or the Alzheimer's AssociationDelbert was born on August 2, 1930, on the family farm in Keystone, the son of Llewellyn and Helen Marie (Sadler) Smith. He graduated from Keystone High School with the class of 1948. He was united in marriage to Leona M. Maurer on March 3, 1951, Leona preceded Delbert in death in 2006. He was united in marriage to Judy Bradley in January of 2007, Judy preceded Delbert in death in 2012. He was united in marriage to Doris Brumley on June 4, 2013. After Delbert and Leona were married Delbert took over primary operation of the family farm, where they raised their family. Summer vacations were spent traveling, camping and fishing. Over the years, they raised beef cattle, hogs, corn, and soybeans plus various other endeavors such as peacocks, quail, chickens, sheep, and sunflowers. The Smith farm was recognized as a Heritage Farm in 2021, celebrating 150 years in the family. After retiring in their 50s the couple enjoyed traveling. They put down roots in both Cape Coral, Florida, and the north woods of Ely, Minnesota, where they built their log home on Eagles Nest Lake #3 out of logs harvested from their property. After 55 years of marriage, and Leona's passing, Delbert met and married Judy. They spent five happy years together, dividing their time between Minnesota and Florida. Together they were very involved with their churches and communities. For the past 10 years, Delbert and Doris have made their home in Cedar Rapids. As Delbert's health and eyesight diminished, Doris was his lifeline, dedicated to caring for Delbert with love. For the last sixteen months Delbert was a resident of an assisted living facility in Cedar Rapids. During his lifetime Delbert was an avid fisherman and lover of cars! He was an active church member and a 4-H leader for 25 years. He was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge. Delbert was always ready to help a friend or neighbor in need. He will be missed by us all. He is survived by his wife Doris Smith; 3 daughters, Susan (Dennis) Wallace of Minneapolis, MN, Deb (Mark) Rhoades of Cedar Falls, Sherry (Steve) Gehlsen of Ames; grandchildren; Willow Martin, Ayla Martin, Leigh (Jason) Martin, Adam Rhoades, Sarah (Nathan) Edwards, Meagen (Will) Rahm, Elizabeth (Kevin) McClure, Emily Wallace, Allison (Jordan) Fuller, Lucas Gehlsen, and Ryan (Paige) Gehlsen; 13 great-grandchildren, Leigh Rhoades Martin, Adam Rhoades, Liam, Lilia, and Lucia Edwards, Rhys and Myles Rahm, Abi and Sydney McClure, Aslynn, Maelynn, Ezra, and Kohana Fuller; and brother Rodney (Glennys) Smith; and many others who loved him. URBANA: Michael "Mike" John Kramer, age 75, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, October 22, 2023Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, October 30, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Urbana with Rev. Jim Brokman as celebrant. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, rural Urbana with graveside military rites conducted by the Walter J. Meyocks American Legion Post #264 and Iowa Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Sunday also at St. Mary's in Urbana. Memorials may be directed to the Urbana-Polk Township Fire Department or The Walter J. Meyocks American Legion Post #264. Mike was born on August 1, 1948, in Urbana, the son of Lawrence and Alice (Willford) Kramer. He graduated from Urbana High School with the class of 1966. Mike served his country in the United States Army from 1968 through 1970 in Germany, attaining the rank of SP5. When he returned home, he worked at Wilson's packing plant in Cedar Rapids. He met his wife Terrie (Jasa) in 1971, and they were married on December 11, 1971, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Urbana. In 1974, Mike started working for the City of Urbana as the Public Works Director, which he retired from in 2004. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was active in the community of Urbana as a member of the Urbana-Polk Township Fire Department for 25 years. He was also a member of the Walter J. Meyocks American Legion Post #264 in Urbana and had served on the Urbana City Council for 8 years. Mike loved everything about his life. He lived for his hunting and fishing adventures, a lot of which were spent at their cabin in Harpers Ferry, Iowa. He had the Mississippi River mapped out for his favorite fishing spots. He truly adored his 2 grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Terrie; son Trent (Emily) Kramer; 2 grandchildren, Jake, and Hannah Kramer, all of Urbana; sister Kathy (Gary) Durow of Center Point; brothers, Keith (Judy) Kramer of Urbana, and Brian (Susan) Kramer of Center Point. BLAIRSTOWN: Eugene R. "Gene" DeNeve, age 78, died Thursday, October 12, 2023, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Van Horne, with Rev. Jacob Dunne as Concelebrant. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Monday at the Blairstown Community Building Gym in Blairstown. A memorial fund has been established. Gene was born on November 20, 1944, in Belle Plaine, the son of Herman and Clara (Baetsle) DeNeve. Gene graduated from Van Horne High School with the class of 1963. On August 22, 1964, he was united in marriage to Becky Kimmich at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne. Gene worked for F. S. for 37 years, driving the fuel truck. He had served with the Van Horne Volunteer Fire Department and was a long-time, active member at St. John Catholic Church. He enjoyed volunteering with Mission of Hope. Gene had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed teasing friends and family alike. You always wanted to be careful accepting any hot-wings from Gene. He loved a good time, especially bowling, Rolle Bolle, Cards and games of any kind. He dearly loved his large family. VINTON: "I must be dead, I read it in the paper"Ted L. Goodell, age 85, died Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Compass Memorial Hospital in Marengo. A Celebration of Life will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 23 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street). Graveside services will take place following the celebration of life on Saturday, with full Navy Military Honors. Following the burial, a luncheon will be provided at the George. G. Lucky post #57 in VintonTed was born on October 4, 1937, in rural Benton County, the son of Forrest and Helen (Bickal) Goodell. Ted graduated from Urbana High School with the class of 1957. Following graduation Ted enlisted in the United States Navy in 1958 and continued his service for 20 years before retiring from the military in 1977. On July, 13, 1957 he was united in marriage to Shirley Brehm. The couple later had six children together. During his enlistment Ted was able to see and live in many beautiful places, such as Honolulu, HI, San Diego, CA, Oakland, CA, Heyward, CA, Norfolk, VA, Columbia, SC. After retirement Ted settled down in Oxford, Iowa. Ted was on the USS Enterprise when it caught on fire and had a series of explosions on January 14, 1969. Following his retirement from the US Navy, Ted was employed by the University of Iowa and ran his own janitorial cleaning company. Ted enjoyed fishing, gardening, and showing off his produce to local businesses in Oxford. Above all else Ted loved his family and lived for his grandchildren, attending many of their events. He was lovingly known as Papa Ted, or PT for short. Ted is survived by his children, Mary Helen Concklin of Indiana, Mark (Judi) Goodell of Iowa City, Aaron (Susie) Goodell of Williamsburg, and Erica Goodell-Hejlik of Springfield VA; grandchildren, Kaylyn Concklin, Karrie (Marco) Seguro of Indiana, Matthew (Kristin) Concklin of Indiana, Abby Goodell, Alissa Goodell, AJ Goodell of Des Moines, Kyle Goodell of Williamsburg, and Brianna Hejlik of Springfield, VA; greatgrandchildren, Titus Jones, Kaysen Jones of Washington, Chloe Concklin, Kaylyn Concklin, Torin Concklin, Addisyn Concklin all of Indiana; brothers, Leon (Sam) Goodell of Boyd, Texas, Gary Goodell of Apple Valley, CA, Kim (Beverly) Goodell of Smyrna, GA; sister, Linda Edler of North Liberty, and sister in law Karen Goodell. Letha was born on September 15, 1933, in Covington, IA, the daughter of Hubert and Thelma (Bemer) Hepker. She became a nurse and met her future husband, Ed Sand while caring for him. They married on September 15, 1954. They had six children. Letha retired from Virginia Gay Hospital. She was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Urbana, Iowa. She was a loving, caring, wife, mother, nurse, and friend. Her memory is cherished by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her 5 daughters, Teresa (Dave) Umbdenstock, Karen Thurm, Rose (Cary) Relf, Mary (Roger) Davis, Joan (Scott) Young; She had 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law; sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Marilyn was united in marriage to William "Bill" Wolfe on February 17, 1955, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She was a farm wife and homemaker in the Cheney area, and also served as a teacher's aid for a number of years in the Urbana school system. Marilyn was a past member of the Cheney Club, and the Pleasant Prairie Club. Survivors include her children, Kathleen (Michael) Naylor of Vinton, Kindra (Larry) Nudd of Vinton, Robert (Pam) Wolfe of Midway; 7 grandchildren, James Naylor, Jennifer Naylor, Jeffrey Naylor, Stoner (Tabitha) Nudd, Nikki Kennedy (Nick), Samantha Kennedy (Richard), Robyn Costello; and her great-granddaughter, Piper. A Parish Rosary will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, August 9th at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton, followed by visitation from 4:30 until 7:00 PM. Joan was born on August 8, 1936, in Dubuque, the daughter of Arnold and Dora (Cruzan) Steger. She was a 1954 graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque and a 1957 graduate of St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing. Joan was united in marriage to George Hahn on October 4, 1958, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dubuque. Joan worked as a registered nurse for 2 years and then stayed home to raise her 6 children. George and Joan moved to Vinton in 1978, and she worked at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School as a classroom aid for 16 years. Joan was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the Altar & Rosary Society. Joan was an avid reader, and traveler, and was a great cook. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, George; 6 children, Kay Spratt of Waterloo, Beth (James) Joslin of Raleigh, NC, Maureen Hahn of Austin, TX, Nancy (Gary) Rash of Buffalo Gap, TX, Doug (Colene) Hahn of West Des Moines, Suzanne (Chris) Schumacher of Ballwin, MO; 10 grandchildren, Chris (Sydney) Spratt, Katie Spratt, Amy (Justin) Reuter, Ryan Rash, Madeline Joslin, Cole Hahn, Nick Schumacher, Claire Hahn Aaron Schumacher, Ben Schumacher 5 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Joyce Steger, and Dorothy and John Enright, Madonna and Bill Glasz, and Bonnie Hahn; and many nieces and nephews.
