Russell Schoeneman, PhD, of Tempe, Arizona, died on February 15, 2024, after a lengthy illness with leukemia. He was born in 1943 in Hawarden, Iowa to Chester and Olive Schoeneman.He is survived by Dianne, his wife of 60 years, their children Geoff and Terri; grandchildren Geoffrey, Ryan (Alexandra), Lilah, and Wiley; great granddaughter Emerson; and his brother Robert (Gilda). He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sandra. He was always very proud of his family’s accomplishments and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.He graduated from West Sioux High School in Hawarden, then attended the University of Iowa and the University of South Dakota before graduating from Arizona State University (ASU) with a BA, MA, and PhD. After his undergraduate degree, he taught English at Tempe High School before returning to ASU for his graduate degrees. He was licensed as a psychologist in 1976, after which he was employed at the Conciliation Court and Juvenile Court in the Maricopa County Superior Court. For three years, he was employed by the Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center in Sheridan, WY. He returned to Arizona, where he was appointed the director of the Conciliation Court. During much of his career, he taught at levels ranging from junior college to graduate college and maintained an independent practice of psychology. He was on several professional boards, including past president of the Association of Family & Conciliation Courts and the first non-Canadian member of Family Mediation Canada. He served as member and chairperson of the City of Tempe’s Merit System Board for almost 20 years.When his children were younger, he and his family enjoyed camping in the Arizona north woods as well as other outdoor activities. He enjoyed his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, including sports such as baseball and softball. He and Dianne enjoyed travelling in both the U.S. and other parts of the world, much of it on river cruises. Russell was also an avid fan of ASU baseball.Our heartfelt thanks go to all the hospital staff who cared for him and made his days as comfortable as possible. Alys Jo (Andersen) Chavarria passed away peacefully on December 19, 2023 at the age of 87 surrounded by her family. Alys Jo "aka Jody" was born in Indiana. Upon graduation from high school, she dabbled in modeling and was a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines. Jody moved to Tempe, Arizona in 1955 to be with her sister and her family. Shortly after moving to Arizona, she met her husband Paul and they were married for 58 years before his passing in 2015. During her working career, she was employed as a Supervisor with AiResearch, Allied Signal and Honeywell until her retirement. Jody enjoyed spending time with her family, camping and traveling to watch ASU football games with her husband. She is survived by her sons - Paul and Phillip (Hayley), daughter Caryn (Kevin), her sister – Hazel Whitlow, four grandchildren – Allie (Daniel), Paul Joseph (Andrew), Ryan and Nicolas, great granddaughters – Hunter and Dilyn, and many nieces and nephews.

Ann Lowman Patterson, age 93, of Tempe, Arizona, passed peacefully surrounded by family on December 29, 2023. Born in Columbus, Ohio, to Bruce and Ruth Lowman, Ann attended Miami University (OH) where she earned a BA and MA. In 1957, Ann and her new husband, Robert (Bob), moved to Tempe, Arizona, where Bob began his career as a Zoology professor at Arizona State College (ASU) while Ann continued as a journalist. She began her career at the Columbus Dispatch, then became the women's editor for the Phoenix Gazette. She stayed home to rear four children, but once they were slightly grown, she returned to journalism. She wrote for the ASU Alumni Association, and later, about architecture and interior design at The Arizona Republic. Ann was a talented journalist, avid reader, and loved to travel. She was a founding member of a book club that continues nearly 60 years later. She and Bob traveled the world, from Austria to Australia, the Arctic Circle to the Equator, Asia to Europe, and across the US. They traveled by auto, ship, plane, hot air balloon, and train. Ann loved it all and never said no to an adventure. After they retired, Ann continued writing and contributing to her community. She worked with the Tempe Historic Preservation and Tempe Arts Commissions, tutored adults in English, and helped children with reading at Broadmor School. At her 89th birthday party, Ann was honored by Tempe's mayor for her contributions. To her delight, it was declared "Ann Patterson Day."Ann is survived by her sister Lois, and her four children, Rebecca (Jack), Kenneth (Kathleen), Jennifer (AJ) and Stephen (Buffy). She is also survived by grandchildren, Alene (David), Zachary (Alex), Ryan, Christian (Amanda), Casey, Caroline, Lucas, Sarah, Ann, Sadie, Zane and David, and great-grandchildren, Arya and Brigid. Ruth 'Chita' Ballesteros Lucero, our beloved mother, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024, shortly before her 86th birthday. She was born to Manuel and Aurelia Ballesteros on February 6, 1938 in Jerome, Arizona. Her family moved from Clarkdale, AZ to Phoenix when she was a young child. She attended Grace Court Elementary School and Phoenix Union High School. For many years, Ruth was a babysitter and caretaker to children of friends and family. They all called her Nina, as she cared for several of her godchildren. In her spare time, she loved to crochet, make puzzles and work on her Seek and Find word books. She enjoyed watching TV, especially the Hallmark Channel. Chita loved her sports, too. The Arizona Diamondbacks was her favorite baseball team. The Army-Navy Football Game was always a favorite of hers, since one brother was in the Army and the other was in the Navy. She also loved listening to her favorite Mexican Ranchera music. Ruth is survived by her children, Mona, Becky and Ray (Michelle), 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ana Marie Gonzales, and many nieces and nephews. Chita was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon I. Lucero, and her 2 brothers, Theodore Ballesteros and Eloy Ballesteros.
