Philip "Ed" Darby, Jr., 93, of Johnson Lake, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Tabitha Prairie Commons in Grand Island surrounded by his loving family.He was born on October 16, 1930, near Darr, Nebraska to Philip Edwin Darby Sr. and Clara B. Strohmyer. He graduated from Lexington High School with the class of 1948. In 1951, Ed joined the United States Army where he did topography in the Philippines during the Korean War until 1953. On July 22, 1956, Ed married the love of his life, Karen Rupe at the United Methodist Church in Lexington. To this union, six daughters were born: Sara, Jennifer, Luanne, Linda, Patricia, and Karla. Ed worked for three years at Reed Engineering in Columbus, Nebraska before dedicating 43 years to the Dawson Public Power District. There he worked for the engineering department for 20 years and transitioned to being a manager for 23 years before retiring in 1998. Ed loved being involved in his community and served on various committees. He was a part of the Founding Fathers of Lexington Foundation, was the president of the Nebraska Power Association, was a secretary and treasurer for the Tri-County Shrine Club, served on the board at Home Federal as well as several committees with the Nebraska Rural Electric Association, helped campaign for John Wightman, and was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge Thistle #61. Ed was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church He loved Nebraska football, spending his days out at the lake, and gardening. He was an incredibly hard worker and was able to fix anything you brought to him. He was a doting father to his girls and always followed their activities as well as his grandchildren's activities. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Sara (Craig Forester) Darby of Omaha, Jennifer Jo (Scott) Mitchell of Grand Island, Luanne Rae Gesell of Lincoln, Linda Kae (Rick) Petet of Lincoln, Patricia Ann (Andrew) Cohen of Lincoln, and Karla Lynn (Roger) Schmidt of Grand Island; grandchildren, Liza Jo (Chad) Lorenz, Clair Olivia Schmidt, Philip Payton (Jessica) Schmidt, Cameron Lee Petet, Erin Darby (Jared Kennedy) Gesell, Darby Linn (Dana) Kurtz, Sydney Kae (Tyler) Wilhelms, and Tanner John Gesell; great-grandchildren, Tatum, Taelor, Devon, Porter, Lettie, Lovelyn and one on the way; sister, Joan C. (William) Smith of Broomfield, Colorado, as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Darby; sister, Jean E. Large; brothers-in-law, Dean Linn and Harold Benzel, sisters-in-law, Gloria Benzel, and Donna Linn.Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Lexington. Grand Island resident Arnold L. Toben, 91, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2024, at CHI Health St. Francis, Grand Island, NE. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 9, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Doniphan with Pastor Tyler Hauptmeier officiating. Burial with military rites by Doniphan American Legion will be at Cedarview Cemetery in Doniphan. Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. with family present 5-7 p.m. Thursday, February 8, at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Doniphan or Doniphan Fire Department QRT. Arnold was born January 9, 1933, in Hastings, NE to Henry and Martha (Porth) Toben. He graduated from Doniphan High School in 1950. Arnold served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He married Marilyn J. Schroetlin on August 7, 1960. Arnold farmed in the area for many years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and American Legion Post #300 in Doniphan. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; siblings and spouses, Victor Toben, Arvilla & Don Treat, Ron & Vivian Toben, and Donald Toben; and infant daughter, Susan K. Toben. Online condolences may be directed to www.apfelfuneralhome.com.Linda Grace Wolff made her entrance on life’s grand stage on March 7, 1944, the youngest of five children born to Melvin and Fern Wells in Grand Island, NE. She took her final curtain call on February 1, 2024, having lived a full life centered around a deep-seated faith and the high school students she was privileged to guide and to teach.After graduation from Hastings College, Linda and her husband, Gene, taught in the English department of Kingman High School. She soon added the responsibilities of being a drama coach to her duties. Linda brought her elegant posture and stage presence to her classroom as well as the solid mid-western values she learned from her parents and teachers at Trinity Lutheran School.Linda retired after three decades of service as a teacher and guidance counselor but stayed busy hiking, singing in the choir at Grace Lutheran Church, cooking her famous "roast beast" for friends and making several extended trips to the British Isles.When illness finally slowed her down, Linda was cared for by the dedicated staff of Country House in Grand Island. The family is grateful for their tender, compassionate care which eased her transition from life to life.Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Fern Wells and her siblings, Neal, Gene, Bob, and Janis. She is survived and missed by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the family for later designation.Mary was born on August 10, 1934 in Ord, NE to Raymond and Ida (Fowler) Murphy. Mary grew up in Ord and graduated from Ord High School. She was united in marriage to Weston Bloomquist in May of 1957.Mary (Mert) loved her Dreisbach family of 44 years as much as she loved her own family. She enjoyed playing Bingo, crocheting, puzzles, and talking on the phone for hours to her Dreisbach co-workers, family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Christy (Alan) Kroeger; sons, Dennis (Karry) Bloomquist, Dean (Vickie) Bloomquist, and Doug (Kim) Bloomquist; brother, Bill (Pat) Murphy; grandchildren, Zac (Nicole) Bloomquist, Ethan (Abbey) Bloomquist, Caleb Hetrick, Tiffany Bloomquist, Rick (Lexie) Bloomquist, Nate (Malorie) Bloomquist, Kylie Bloomquist; step grandchildren, Tyler and Cody Kroeger; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. WOOD RIVER – Abraham G. Soto, 92, of Wood River, passed away on February 13, 2024, at the Veterans Medical Center in Grand Island. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River, NE. The Rev. Jorge Canela will be the celebrant. Burial with military honors by the Grand Island Honor Guard will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wood River and will conclude with a rosary at 7 p.m. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.Abraham was born March 16, 1931, in Hastings, NE to Jesus and Rosario (Herrera) Soto. He received his elementary and middle school education in Hastings, before moving to Wood River in the mid-1940s where he received his high school education at Wood River High School.He was drafted into the Army in 1953 and went to basic training at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, for 16 weeks. He was deployed to The Harold D. Smith Barracks, Baumholder, Germany, where he was assigned to the 43rd Armored Infantry Division Head Quarters & Service Co. and was in a Morter Platoon. He served for 1 year, 6 months and 23 days in foreign and sea service. Abraham returned to the USA on February 11, 1955. He served 2 years and one day, because of a storm delay.On February 18, 1956, he married Emily Galvan. They were 5 days shy of their 68th anniversary. They raised their family in Wood River. He worked in construction and farmed. He worked at Sperry New Holland for 20 years, 15 of those years he was a supervisor. He was able to retire at 55. After retirement, he worked in the summer at the Wood River Country Club. He also helped Marvin Wiseman in the fall with harvest. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Emily; his children and their spouses: Judy and Chris Wiemers of Elm Creek, Abraham Jr., and Sue Soto of Omaha, Michael and Misty Soto of Wood River; Jesse and Marilyn Soto and Terri and Gilbert Trejo, all of Grand Island, and Tim and Jodie Soto of Phoenix, Arizona; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; brothers: Frank Soto of Oxnard, California, Robert and Linda Soto, and Richard and Virginia, all of Wood River; and a sister, Juanita and Robert Briseno of Wood River. He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Secundino and Isabel Galvan; brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Reynalda Soto; brother, Joseph Soto; sisters and brothers-in-law: Lupe and Henry Aldana, Connie and Gonzalo DeLeon, Comfort and Felipe DeLeon, and Hope and Pete DeLeon.

Barb was born February 17, 1963 in Kearney, Nebraska to Lloyd and Rose (Clouse) Stauffer. She received her education from Elm Creek High School, graduating with the class of 1981. Barb later attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Kearney State College. On March 6, 1987, Barb was united in marriage to Matt Benson in Kearney, NE. To this union two sons were blessed. Barb worked at Elm Creek Veterinary Clinic and most recently at The Buckle until her health forced her to retire. She had a passion for art and loved to draw. She enjoyed being outdoors and gardening. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Tyson (Melissa) Benson of Doniphan, NE and AJ Benson of Kearney; grandchildren, Rosalie, Charlotte and Elena Benson; siblings, Vickie Stauffer, Kathy Petersen, Bill Stauffer, Rita Stauffer and Mark Stauffer; longtime companion, Matt Benson; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Barb was preceded in death by her parents; and great niece, Evelyn Langer."

Deb graduated from Republican Valley High School in 1979 and then went on to attend Mid Plains Community College. On February 14, 1988, Deb was united in marriage to Robert Rose and two children were blessed into this union. For the last 30 plus years, Deb has worked for Cabela’s, now Bass Pro. In her spare time, Deb enjoyed horses, barrel racing, genealogy, and taking care of children. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Robert; children, Tosha Gott, Tim (DeEtta) Rose; seven grandsons; siblings, David (Tess) Larington, Dan (Michelle) Larington, Andrea (Mike) Castor, and many extended family members. Deb was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents."

Condolences can be left at www.giallfaiths.com. Theresa was born September 8, 1954 in Palm City, CA to Joseph “Spud” E. and Josephine “JoAnne” Shafer. She grew up in various towns around Nebraska and graduated from Ord High School in 1972. She then moved to Omaha and that is where she met the love of her life Thomas. They were united in marriage on September 28, 1974 in Ord. To this union five children were born. They lived in Omaha until 1977 when they moved to North Platte and then in 1993, they moved to Grand Island. She attended Mid-Plains Community College where she received an associated degree. Terry was employed with Mid Plains Center for Behavior Health for over 20 years. Terry was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She attended all their musicals, sporting events and activities. She will be remembered for always having a surplus of candy comparable to a candy store. She liked to read and be on the boat at the river or the side-by-side. Her and Thomas enjoyed traveling and went to many amazing places together. She was always up for a game, whether it was Yahtzee, bingo or pitch and she always kept a running tally of who won. She was always happy with a big smile on her face (until Wal-Mart started self-checkout). She was hardworking, passionate and always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Terry is survived by her husband, Thomas; children, Jennifer (Tyler) Hering of Omaha, Amanda (Steve) Skradski of Omaha, Alison (David) Johnson of Omaha, Martin (Erin) Urbanski of Grand Island and Thomas II (Jessica) Urbanski of Papillion; grandchildren, TJ, Brayden, Maddie, Hayley, Skylar, Isaac, Ellie, Natalie, Savannah, Mackenzie, Corbyn, Avery, Thomas III, Alexander and Lilianna; sister, Cynthis (Harvey) Schultz of Queen Creek, AZ; brother, Dan Shafer of West Monroe, LA; and sisters in-law, Mickey (Dean) Shafer of Grand Island and Marlene Vasicek of Ord; 11 nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles. Terry is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joseph Michael Shafer and Donald Douglas Shafer; in-laws, Martin and Adeline Urbanski and brother in-law, Leonard Urbanski."

Penny was born September 22, 1948 in St. Charles, Iowa the daughter of Eldon and Martha (Allen) Fife. At the age of 13 she moved to Mineola, IA and graduated from high school in Glenwood, IA in 1967. On September 9, 1967 she was united in marriage to Willie R. Brown. They made their home in Grand Island. Penny worked as a nursing assistant at Parkplace Nursing Home. From 1978-1995 she worked at the Grand Island VA Hospital. She then worked for Skagway South and the Grand Island Nebraska Veterans Home retiring in 2003. Penny liked to fish, sew, read, make quilts, play cards, garden, and enjoyed spending time with her family. Those left to cherish his memory include her daughter Victoria Brown; grandchildren, Morgan Brown, Nathan (Kimmy) Crockett and Briana (Ty) Dimmitt; great grandson, Beau Dimmitt; brothers Eldon Fife of San Bernadino, CA, Mark Fife of Des Moines, IA, Stephen Fife of Des Moines, IA and Dennis Fife of Iowa. She is preceded in death by her husband, Willie who died on February 4, 2018; daughter, Valerie Brown; 2 grandchildren, David and Lisa Crockett; her parents, Eldon and Pauline Fife; sisters, Paula Fife, Peggy Nelson and Patti Sieck and brother, Allen Fife."
