"Jerome D. Wadzinski, age 66, of Connorsville, WI died unexpectedly of heart failure on September 8th, 2023. Jerry was born April 20,1957 in Marshfield, WI to parents Randy and Evelyn Wadzinski. Jerry and family moved to Boyceville, WI in 1970 where he attended school and graduated from Boyceville High School class of 1975. Following high school he pursued a career in the family tradition of his grandfather and uncles in the masonry trade. Jerry worked 40 years as a bricklayer for various companies in WI and MN. During his work years to present he was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Local 19-WI. From childhood on, Jerry enjoyed competitive sports and outdoor hobbies: football, basketball, hunting, bowling, downhill skiing, cutting wood, and many years in softball, darts, and pool leagues. He was an avid follower of college and pro sports, especially basketball-a loyal Dukes supporter. Jerry was also a Packers, Badgers, and Brewers fan. Proud of his heritage, Jerry readily accepted the nickname 'Pollock'. He valued relationships with family and many friends that he referred to as his 'buddies' and 'pals'-high school buddies, work pals, drinking buddies, sports buddies, and on. Being very social and quite a talker he had an uncanny ability to recall and tell stories with dates, places, and times shared with each family member or friend. Jerry will be dearly missed by his surviving family: Mother Evelyn Wadzinski of Boyceville, Sisters Laura Wadzinski of Wausau, Deb (Slick) Hoage of Colfax, Linda (Stan) Larson of Connorsville, Dianne (Steve) Martinez of Almond WI, 'adopted' Sister Brenda (Jeff) McIntyre of Somerset, Nephew Jamie (Angie) Larson and family Sydney and Brady of Connorsville, Niece LeAnna (Seth) Stanchik and family Delaney of Boyceville. Jerry is reunited in the good company and care of those preceding him: Father Randy Wadzinski; grandparents Louis and Sylvia Wadzinski, Erwin and Meta Fust. Close and very special friends Mark (Robbie) Palmer and Jamie Anderson; other relatives and friends. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Olson Funeral Home with celebrant Teresa Pejsa officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p. m. There will be a traditional polish farewell toast following the service. Private burial will be held at a later date. Phyllis Lyons

Age - 92

"Phyllis Louise (Howard) Lyons age 92 of La Crosse, Wisconsin went home to her heavenly Father on November 30, 2023, while at Comforts of Home Memory Care in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Phyllis was born on June 27, 1931, to Elmer and Meta (Welch) Howard of La Crosse. Phyllis attended Logan High School. She was in the choir, band, and was selected to join the city marching band. Phyllis also enjoyed working at the Rivoli Theater. On October 15, 1949, she married her childhood sweetheart, Richard "R. J. " Lyons. They were married for 58 years until his passing in 2007. Once married, Phyllis became a very skilled silk screener and was proud of her work. She silk-screened decretive designs on glass while she worked at Gateway Products and silk-screened decals for many well-known companies at Empire Silk Screening. She even worked on the decals for the Space Shuttle Challenger. She retired from Empire in 1993. Phyllis looked forward to the weekends because she and "R. J. " would pack up the car on Friday nights and head to their cabin on the river in Black River Falls. There, she enjoyed entertaining family and friends, relaxing in the yard, woodworking, fishing for muskies, and watching a variety of wildlife; her favorite by far was the hummingbird. Embroidery was also one of her big passions. Phyllis loved making dish towels and pillowcases for the people she loved, and she passed down her expertise to her granddaughter and great granddaughter. In addition to her other hobbies, she loved to watch and cheer on The Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Braves. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Teresa (Lyons) Ayres; granddaughter, Turkia (Monsoor) McCauley and her husband Steven; great-grandson, Mitchell; great-granddaughter, Kennedy; sister Patricia (Howard) Hundt, and husband Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge all the staff members at Comforts of Home. You became part of our family. Your care and support throughout the years has been truly amazing. The family would also like to thank all of friends and family who have called, texted, and/or posted condolences and prayers of encouragement. "Larry E. Hellendrung, age 94, of Menomonie, WI passed away peacefully around family Saturday, November 25, 2023, at his home. He was born July 22, 1929, in Menomonie, WI to Valentine and Helen (Rogers) Hellendrung. He grew up in the Menomonie area and graduated from Boyceville High School in 1947. January 4, 1951, Larry joined the Air Force to be in the air police. While stationed out in Spokane, Washington he met Donna Mitton. They were married on December 8, 1952. They had four children: Larry Jr. , Donald, Ronald, and DeAnna. Larry retried from Ralston Purina in 1998. Soon into retirement he moved back to Menomonie where he grew up. He enjoyed getting together with his siblings, working on his John Deere tractors, building doll houses, and having family gatherings at his home. Larry is survived by his two children Donald (Georgia) Hellendrung of Edina, Minnesota and DeAnna (Brad) Trussell of Menomonie, WI. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister Marvel (Hellendrung) Brahmer, brother Roger (Kathleen) Hellendrung; and survived by many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Valentine and Helen; wife Donna; his sons Ronald and Larry Jr. ; his brother Kenneth; as well as his special dogs Toby, Monica, Boots, and Jordan. John Ubel

Age - 98

"John (Jack) Reginald Ubel departed exactly as he wished, at home in bed with his beloved dog Charlie. He dressed, went dining with friends, was active and engaged to his last day. He lived 98 healthy years and managed his own life and affairs until the very end. Although born in St. Paul, Jack was a child of Knapp. His father, John Ubel, was killed in a streetcar accident when he was 5 months old necessitating his mother, Ruth Nida Blandford to move to Chicago for work leaving him with her Aunt Xerpha Peck and Uncle Holland in Knapp. His Mother sent money to support him but after a few years Aunt Xerpha needed the help. Jack had become a child of this small town, and his character of responsibility was established. Xerpha was crippled from arthritis and had lost her husband and only son, so Jack began taking care of her. Busy hands and learning were evident in his childhood. He built a club house, a motor derby car and requested a chemistry set for Xmas. In adulthood he built grandfather clocks, made surf boards, learned welding and fiber glassing, restored boats and built electronics. His hands were always busy. Jack married the "most beautiful girl he had ever seen", Mary Lehr. A girl he noticed in high school and told his friends, "that is the girl I am going to marry!" and he did and they celebrated 67 years together. First daughter, Heidi, was born when Jack was 19, married and working in Iowa for the army. They had just had a newborn and Mary got the mumps, so he cared for a new baby and sick wife. A second daughter, Dina, completed the family. Jack was a "Jack of all Trades". After a condensed year of study at Dunwoody Institute we worked as an armament calibration instrument specialist for the army. After the war they returned to Knapp and he worked as an engine watchmen, shoveling coal and keeping the locomotive engine ready for steam in the morning. Next came a restaurant and working with Frances Bosley installing gas burners in commercial businesses such as creameries and canning factories. They travelled throughout the Midwest and Dad recalled leaving a motel even though there was a blizzard because the bedbugs were so bad. They would rather risk the snowstorm. Next, he and Jim Purvis opened a hardware store in Knapp. During these years he earned both his Master Electrician and Master Plumber certifications. He was licensed to test water and also became a Professional Engineer without attending college! He said," I was good at taking tests". He co- owned Woodward Electric and did electrical contracting though out the area. Not busy enough he developed Hill Terrace Mobile Home Park in Knapp and consulted for Cedar Corporation. His final position was director of the Water and Sewer Utility for the city of Menomonie. Jack was engaged in many civic organizations including Lions and Rotary. He was Mayor of Knapp and "made many folks mad" when he developed the pond. He also was responsible for the installation of sewage and water utilities in the village of Knapp. He served 10 years on the Menomonie Board of Education and with Clarence Werner encouraged the district to buy the property which is now the school forest. He served on the Dunn County Board. Leisure life was equally full and fulling. Jack and Mary were members of a snowmobile club, dance club, boat and ski club, RV club and citizen band radio club! He earned his scuba diving certification and was in the U. S. Coast Guard Auxillary and U. S. Power Squadron, teaching for them. Travelling and keeping in touch with lifelong friends was very important too. At 98 he was still a "techie" with 2 computers, Alexa, Ring Doorbells, blue tooth hearing aids and a smart watch. Jack was Jack. He seemed gruff and outspoken but he was tender-hearted. He enjoyed friendly arguments, maintained his opinion yet felt no animosity to the other side. He hosted his twice a week coffee group in his home with friends who were from all walks of life. Robust conversations! Barely a day passed that a friend or neighbor didn't stop to visit. His door was always open making his friends and neighbors feel welcome. Jack is survived by his two daughters: Heidi Baruch of Boulder, CO and Dina (Lee) VandeBerg of Madison, WI; 5 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Jack was truly blessed to be loved by many. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Dunn County Humane Society or "Bob's House For Dogs", a nonprofit shelter in Eau Claire. Thank you Knapp and all of his devoted friends. A special thanks to Vince Hague for years of steadfast devotion and friendship. Jack Ubel had a full and remarkable blessed life. He always said, "I've" lived at the best time and in the best place". Mary Orfield

Age - 82

"It's with great sadness that we share the news that Mary Louise Orfield, age 82, of Menomonie, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023, at her home. Mary was born August 23, 1941, in Winona, Minnesota, to Paul and Louise Datta. Mary grew up in Berlin, Wisconsin, and graduated from Berlin High School in 1959. Mary went on to earn her bachelor's degree at UW- Eau Claire in 1963. Mary taught Mathematics at Menomonie Junior High School and Science at Menomonie High School. Mary married Bernhard Orfield on October 24, 1964, and together they recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. Mary continued her education by earning her master's degree from UW-Stout and then her doctorate degree in Materials Science from the University of Minnesota in 1987. She was a tenured Chemistry Professor at UW-Stout until she retired in 2003. Mary continued to be active in her community volunteering at many local agencies. She never hesitated to help others no matter their circumstances. She and Bernie opened their home to many individuals in need, and after Eric and Sue were out of the nest, they were foster parents to three children. Mary donated her time at the Menomonie Public Library, at The Bridge To Hope, mentoring inmates at the Dunn County Jail to earn their GEDs, and supporting those in need within Twelve-Step Recovery Programs. Mary loved animals, caring for many dogs and cats over the years. She enjoyed annual summer vacations with her family, especially her time on the water. She and Bernie enjoyed live music and supported all of their daughter Sue's musical endeavors. Mary was accomplished and creative in the kitchen, finding joy in dreaming up her own concoctions and modifying old favorites. "She never met a recipe she couldn't improve on. " She also enjoyed other creative outlets, like designing and decorating their home and sewing clothes and she was a voracious reader. Mary is survived by her husband Bernhard of Menomonie, one son, Eric (Dawn) Orfield of Green Bay, one daughter, Sue Orfield (Randy Sinz) of Eau Claire, one foster son, Robert Young, three grandchildren: Lauren (Benjamin) Flynn, Paige (Colin) Duffy, and Noah Orfield and one great-grandson Callahan Duffy, all of Green Bay. Mary will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, John Datta. "Laura R. Severson, age 77, of Menomonie, WI passed away Monday, November 13, 2023 at her daughter Markia (Mark) Schmidts home surrounded by loved ones and her beloved dog Bobby. She was born October 26, 1946 to Marvin and Dorothy (Cormican) Burton in Amery, WI. She graduated from Boyceville High School in 1964. Through her marriages, Laura was blessed with six wonderful daughters. Laura was a hard worker and farmed for over 20 years. She started her factory career at Sandy Lees before working at McMillans for 39 years. She also served as a caretaker from time to time. Laura enjoyed eating all different types of food, and took much pride in her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. She was always busy canning in the summer months. In her free time, she loved to read books. She also enjoyed many adventures traveling with family and her best friend/sister-in-law Jill Burton. Spending time with her family was very important to Laura. She was the best Grandma ever. She was a member of the Wilson Calvary assembly of God Church since 1972. Laura survived a near death encounter with a bull and her faith got her through this difficult time and many other trials throughout her life. "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. " Luke 10:19 Laura is survived by her daughters Jodi (Joe) Lovell, Lori Lamm, Crystal Doreen (Tony) Andersen, Afton (Tom) Simpson, and Markia (Mark) Schmidt; grandchildren Kari, Amanda, Daniel, Brentley, Jessica, Joe, Jericka, James, Justin, Tyler, Dylan, Stephanie, Ashley, Sarah, Allyson, Austin, Jayden, Alana, and Sophia; 34 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She is further survived by siblings Victoria (Michael) Zurn, Marvin Lowell (Jill) Burton, Merlin (Gail) Burton, Kevin (Tina) Burton, Calvin (Bev) Burton, Rodney Burton, Valarie (Tim) Bonngard and many nieces' nephews' other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Marlow Burton, daughter Georgina Howard, and son-in-law Tom Lamm. Laura was looking forward to reuniting with her daughter Georgina and her three unborn children. Laura was cared for in her final years by Mark and Markia Schmidt and family with special help from grandchildren Jayden and Lillian. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. David Walton

Age - 40

"We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of David James Walton at the age of 40. He passed away after a long battle of diabetes and MS on November 6, 2023 at his home. David was born on August 7, 1983 in LaCrosse, WI to David and Victoria Opsahl. After the passing of his birth mother and with the blessing of his birth father, David was adopted by Pamela and Michael Walton. He grew up with his three siblings, Lisa, Jamie, and Chelle in Wabasha, MN. David\u0027s biggest joys in his life were his three children, AnnaDeja, Max, and Trinity. His face lit up when he talked about them. He was so proud to be their Dad. David was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He found solace in his countless hours on the land owned by his Dad and Stepmom, Nancy, in Nelson, WI. David was a long-time employee at Angels Haven in Menomonie where he provided care and support to individuals with disabilities. He was adored by the patients; as was his dog. David is survived by his three children, AnnaDeja, Maxamis, and Trinity, along with their mother, Nikki. His parents, Pamela Walton, Michael and Nancy Walton, and his birth father, David (Sara) Opsahl. His siblings, Lisa (Jeff) McGee, Jamie (Sara) Walton, Chelle (Ross) Weeden, and Chad (Michelle) Weltzin. Nieces and nephews, Chloe, Piper, Nini, Harlow, Lily, Hudson, Abbigail, Kailah, and Jaxsen. Godparents, Margie and Jerry Ott. Along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, his dog, Xena, and cat, Bagheera. He was preceded in death by his birth mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and a close cousin. He will be so incredibly missed. "Karen L. (Metzger) Bignell, age 72, of Menomonie, WI passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Mayo Red Cedar in Menomonie with her family by her side. She was born May 2, 1951 in Menomonie, WI to Lyle and Delores (Bedient) Metzger. She grew up in Knapp and graduated from Menomonie High School in 1969. After high school she worked at 3M, she also worked in the healthcare field as a nurse in Minnesota and Menomonie. Karen met the love of her life, Wayne Bignell and they married on November 6, 1971. They resided in Menomonie, WI and together they raised three boys, Jim, Mike and Wayne Jr. . Karen was a homemaker for many years before returning to work as a bartender for TJ\u0027s Inn in Downsville WI, Midway Roadhouse in Menomonie WI and later she worked for lndianhead for many years in a supervisory position. Karen loved spending time with her family, it was everything to her. The grandchildren brought her so much joy. She enjoyed watching the Packer\u0027s and Badgers and about any football game she could find, she loved her football. She loved being outdoors and going on side by side rides with family and friends. Karen was an amazing woman, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Those who touch our lives, stay in our hearts forever and this is where Karen will be. "Douglas (Butch) Gundlach (78) died October 19, 2023 after a brief illness. He was born on July 29, 1945 to Earl and Leona (Hegeman) Gundlach. He was known by many as Doug, Barney, Butch and Butchie. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, an uncle, a father, a grandfather, a friend to many and a husband to his loving wife Carol. He was always ready to lend a hand and help others, often accompanied by a quick witted joke and a hearty laugh and smile. After growing up in Boyceville with his brothers (Ronald, Lewis, Norman) and twin sister (Darlene), he joined the Army and served for three years. He married Carol (Brunn) who he shared his life with in the Menomonie area for the last 55 years. Doug spent his career in construction and as an independent drywall finisher. In his later years he enjoyed camping, sitting around the campfire, watching Westerns, playing dominoes, and tinkering in his shed with his dog. He is survived by his wife, Carol; son James (Susan); daughter Tina (Jim) Prechter; grandchildren Samuel, Daniel, Jacob, Rachel, Jake, Elliot, Trevor, and Garrett; Two brothers Norman, and Lewis (Barb); his twin sister Darlene (John) Marczak; and sister-in-law Fran Gundlach. He is further survived by many other friends and relatives. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Neighbors of Dunn County for their care and compassion. He will be missed by all who knew him and remembered fondly by everyone he met.
