Jerry Charles Torkelson was born December 4, 1944, to the late Charles O and Edna E. (Leopold) Torkelson, in Springfield, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. Jerry attended Windom public schools and graduated with the class of 1962. After high school, Jerry enlisted in the U. S. Army, and served for one year in Vietnam. Jerry was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army. On December 2, 1967, Jerry was united in marriage to Barbara Lee Taylor. The union was blessed with two daughters, Staci and Tara. Jerry worked as a lineman for over 40 years for the City of Windom. He was active in the VFW and American Legion. In his free time, Jerry loved to go for drives, especially to watch his brother's work. He enjoyed meeting his buddies for coffee. He was a member of the Karz & Trux club and a motorcycle club. He also enjoyed horses, camping, and talking with people. Jerry was admitted to Windom Area Health on June 17th and passed away on June 18th, with his family by his side. Jerry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barb Torkelson of Windom; two daughters, Staci Gommersch of Mankato, and Tara Torkelson of Windom; three grandchildren, Izzy, Jack, and Stella; two brothers, Randy (Linda) Torkelson and Mark (Donna) Torkelson; as well as many dear family members and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Edna Torkelson; son-in-law, Joe Grommersch; and one sister, Nancy Rippentrap. A Celebration of Life Service for Jerry Torkelson will be held on Thursday, June 23rd at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Windom, with Pastor Mike McInnis officiating. Military honors will follow outside the church immediately following the service with burial following the military honors at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Windom. Visitation and time of gathering will be from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 23rd at the First United Methodist Church in Windom.
