St. Leon, IN

Jerome "Jake" Stenger, 93 years old of St. Leon, Indiana, peacefully passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023. He was born and raised in St. Leon. He purchased land from his mother to build a home for his family. He loved the town of St Leon and told many fond and memorable stories over the years frequently starring the 'Stenger' boys which were his many brothers. Jake served in the United States Army and upon his return from Germany became a dedicated member of the St. Joseph American Legion Post 464. Jake had his own business, Jake's Garage, St Leon. After closing Jake's Garage, he went to work for his childhood friend, Ed Oehlman, at Firestone in Brookville. Jake made friends all over the county and beyond. When he wasn't working at Firestone, he was on his farm raising cattle and baling hay. Jake had a strong work ethic and rarely took a day off. Despite working two jobs most of his life, he found the time to coach American Legion baseball for over 55+ years. While winning games meant some something to him, shaping young men's lives is what meant the most to him. The impact he had on so many local boys carry on today as they've become adults, fathers, and coaches themselves. Many former players stayed in contact with him over the years and reflected fondly on the memories and lessons learned. He had friends across Indiana and beyond usually knowing people when the family traveled for vacations outside the State, even to Florida. When he wasn't working or coaching, he could often be found playing poker or 7-Up on Saturday nights. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan for decades staying tuned in on the radio or at the game on the riverfront. He was also a staple at many local sporting events, mostly at East Central, but occasionally in Batesville if it meant seeing a grandchild play. Fireman's festivals, church picnics, and events at Post 464 were mainstays in Jake's life and he could always be seen at these local events talking and listening to just about everyone. As a parishioner of St. Joseph, he rarely missed Sunday mass and wanted to attend even when it became nearly physically impossible for him to do so. A special memory was the ringing of the new church bells at St. Joseph's. Jake's biggest joy was his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing was more important than his family. Jake will be deeply missed by his children Terri Gardner of Batesville, Jerry (Sandy) Stenger of St. Leon, Lynn (Ric) Hertel of Batesville; sister Joan Oesterling of Oldenburg; eight grandchildren~Sam, Kate, Bill, Carly, Kira, James, Jessica, and Tripp and four great grandchildren, Madison, Tommy, Ruby and Ophelia. He is preceded in death by Ruth, his wife of 69 years; siblings-Sylvester Stenger, Joseph Stenger, Melvin Stenger, Earl Stenger, Theodore Stenger, and Anthony Stenger; and parents Catherine & Joseph Stenger. Visitation for Jake will be held on Monday, September 18, in St. Joseph Church, St. Leon, IN. Rosary will begin at 10:00 AM with visitation directly following until 1:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00 PM and burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery. Ella Rose Andres Schneider, 76 years old of St. Leon, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2022. Mary Hodapp Weldishofer, 81 years old, of St. Leon, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022. Jerome Fuernstein

Jerome Fuernstein

Age - 72

August 16, 2021

Jerome Fuernstein, 72 years old of St. Leon, passed away Thursday morning, April 30, surrounded by those he loved the most. Jerome had a great sense of humor and loved to tease and tell jokes. His warm personality lit up the room and would make friends with everyone. . . Jerome never met a stranger. Jerome met his wife, Roseanne of 49 years, at a CYO dance in New Alsace. Since then, they've been inseparable. He loved to rebuild cars, fix tractors or anything else that might need some tuning up, "if Roseann broke it, he fixed it". Jerome had many talents including making wine, tending to his vegetable garden and cooking. He was quite the foodie and one of his favorites was pineapple upside down cake. He also loved to hunt and fish and Roseann would gladly prepare anything he brought home for dinner. Another hobby was bee keeping and Jerome, Roseann, and Bridget would make their own honey. They loved to camp and hike as a family, enjoying a vacation to a dude ranch and also spending three weeks out west. Jerome's best friend was his dad and they would spend as much time as they could together. One project that stands out is when they made a chicken coop out of stainless steel doors inside the garage. Between the weight and size of the coop, they could barely get it outside for the chickens to use! But, perseverance paid off and the chickens were happy. Of course, with all the chicken eggs came more cooking including homemade noodles and angel food cake. One of the best memories that many family and friends will have is the 25 years that Jerome dressed as Santa; he was a jolly old soul for sure. It is these stories and more that the family hopes will keep his memory alive. We know during this difficult time, it wasn't possible for many to see him before he passed, but the memories you created with him left an imprint on his heart he will never forget. Hug those close to you, cherish the stories you have and keep on smiling for him. Jerome was in the Army National Guard and a member of the New Alsace Legion Post 452. Jerome will be greatly missed by his wife Roseann, daughter Bridget of St. Leon, brother James of St. Leon, sister Darlene Mudd of Trafalgar, IN, his dog Jackson, and many close friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Lester & Georgiana and brother Russell. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 11:00 am at St. Paul's cemetery of All Saints Parish. Memorials can be made to New Alsace Legion Post 452 or Cincinnati VA Medical Center at 3200 Vine Street, Cincinnati, OH 45220. Andres-Wuestefeld Funeral Home is honored to care for Jerome and his family. Please visit www. andres-wuestefeldfh. com to offer online condolences.Show more

Tim Andres

Tim Andres

Age - N/A

June 16, 2021

Tim "Sach" Andres, 59 years old of St. Leon, passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2021. A generous man who would drop everything to help someone else, Tim was always there to support to his family, friends, and community. His mom could always count on Tim to fix things around the house. At home, he loved to work in the yard, play with the dogs, and listen to his beloved Reds on the radio. He also enjoyed his time volunteering as a chicken fat puller at the St. Leon Fireman's Festival every summer. Born and raised in St. Leon, Tim was well known and liked by everyone. His talents in the masonry field led him to owning his own brick laying business and then working for Ollier Masonry for the past several years. Tim shared his talents with the community, doing work for the churches, local businesses, and friends. In his free time, you could find Tim on the golf course during the summer and at the North Dearborn Conservation Club shooting trap during the winter. After thirty-one years of marriage and two beautiful daughters, Tim & Missy were still having fun. They loved to ride his Harley and often went on rides with friends. Missy's family loved to tease that they loved Tim as much, if not more, than her. He tried to be the disciplinarian with his girls, but it wasn't in Tim's DNA; he was just wrapped around their fingers. Tim was happy with life and enjoyed everything he had. Tim will be deeply missed by his wife, Missy, and their daughters Kari & Kasey; his mother Charol Andres Fuernstein, and siblings Cynthia (Daniel) Ullmann of South San Francisco, CA, Susan Mendel of Sunman, Steve (Christie) Andres of St. Peters, Catherine Kissel of Batesville, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Tim is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Andres. Visitation for Tim will be on Thursday, June 17, 2021, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at the Parish Life Center at 7536 Church Lane, W.
