Dennis Gottschalk

Dennis Gottschalk

Age - 78

October 23, 2023

Dennis "Big Den" Gottschalk passed away on October 19th surrounded by his family and lots of love. Denny was born, raised and resided in his hometown of Winona, MN his whole life, other than his time serving in the Coast Guard. That was not only a source of pride for him, but began his lifelong love of the water, including all the good times on the Mississippi River with his family and many friends. Our family also appreciated the special services and kindness the Winona VA showed to him. And it was during his time in the Coast Guard while stationed in Cleveland, OH that he was set up on a blind date with a lovely blonde named Judy and the rest is history. While Big Den wasn't at all big in stature, he had the biggest heart of anyone we knew along with a great big, wonderful personality, so the nickname sure was fitting. Big Den loved the simple pleasures in life, including an ice-cold Busch Light, a cruise in his red Mustang convertible, a piping hot Rocco's pizza, grabbing Kwik Trip coffee and finding trouble with his best friend of 60+ years, Robert "Brother Bob" Grant, doing projects and grabbing a beer and burger with his best buddy Paul "Tollie" Tollefson and telling his granddaughter Clara Jude she was literally the best at everything she did. That included watching Clara for hours on her trampoline and on her swing set (a gift from Grandma built by Big Den and Brother Bob) doing all her tricks and shows for Grandpa. It was a match made in heaven. Denny spent his entire career as a successful salesman, not surprising to anyone that knew how much he loved to talk and meet new people. He retired at the top of his game and loved his second career as full-time Grandpa. One of Big Den's passions later in life was travel. He loved going on international cruises, spending time in Florida during the winter, visiting Seattle and sunny California. Our family also wants to say a very special thank you to the staff at Gracewood Senior Living in St. Paul, MN for all their care and compassion for Big Den. Denny is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Judy, his adoring daughters, Michelle Gottschalk and Kimberly Gottschalk (and son-in-law Tommy Kueppers who saved him from finally being the only guy in his immediate family), his beloved big sister, Diane "DeeDee" Gottschalk, the light of his life, granddaughter Clara Jude Kueppers, his favorite sister-in-law Janie May (and the whole Cleveland Crew) and so many family and friends that he loved deeply. Denny was preceded in death by his treasured Mother and Father, Ruth and Arnold Gottschalk, his dear siblings, Darrel Gottschalk, Ardys Malesker, Merlin "Butch" Gottschalk and Sharon Gottschalk as well as his shenanigan co-conspirator, brother-in-law Tommy May. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Winona County Veterans Services at 225 West Second Street Winona, MN 55987. There will be an upcoming Celebration of Life for Big Den on Saturday, December 9th (his birthday month) at The Riverport Inn in Winona. More details to follow but know there will be a cold Busch Light or a hot cup of Kwik Trip coffee for all of those that can join us. Services entrusted to Fawcett Junker Funeral Home & Crematory, Winona, MN. Online condolences can be left at www. fawcett-junkerfuneralhome. com.Show more
