"PITTSBURG, KS - Jenifer Lyn McDonald, 47, of Pittsburg, died September 9, 2023 of a sudden illness. She was born February 13, 1976 in Pittsburg the daughter of Captain James L. and Barbara Williams Hurt. She had lived in Pittsburg for most of her life. She graduated with honors in 1994 from Frontenac High School, received her Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from PSU in 1998, received her Masters of Business Administration from PSU in 1999, received her Masters of Human Resource Development from PSU in 2022. She married Christopher D. McDonald on July 6, 2002 at the Victory Life Center in Pittsburg. He survives at the home in Pittsburg. She was the training coordinator for Crawford County Mental Health Department for the past 7 months, had worked at Ascension Via Christi, Greenbush, Depco and Egon Zender in Dallas, Texas. She was baptized at the First Christian Church in Pittsburg, was a Pittsburg Woman of Distinction in 2017, was a member of Phi Tau Omega Sorority Theta Epsilon Chapter where she held all national and local offices, served as president of Hope for MS, Civic Health Hero, president of southeast Kansas Human Resource Association, Past President of the Frontenac Rotary Club, Frontenac Education Foundation, friends of Pittsburg Public Library past President, Pittsburg Lions Club, Mother to Mother Ministry, Frontenac Library Board, and secured many grants to improve lives of those suffering from mental illness. Survivors include her husband Chris McDonald of the home, a son Camden McDonald of Pittsburg, her mother Barbara Hurt of Pittsburg, two sisters Lee Ann Gazi (Kenan) of London, England, Heather Spaur (Marc McCully) of Frontenac, and one brother James Hurt of Pittsburg, brother in law Brandon Spaur (Michelle Alt) of Pittsburg, two nieces Zehra Gazi of London and Madison Spaur of Frontenac, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services will be 10 am Monday September 18, 2023 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway in Pittsburg, KS, with Peter Mayo, officiating. Urn bearers will be Camden McDonald, Chris McDonald, James Hurt, Kenan Gazi, Marc McCully and Brandon Spaur. Inurnment will be in the Frontenac City Cemetery. The family will receive their friends from 6 to 8 pm Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in her memory to the Frontenac Education Foundation in care of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home. WHEN HER HUSBAND TO BE, FLOYD SIMON RETURNED FROM THE ARMY AIR CORPS IN 1946, THEY MARRIED AND SHE BECAME A HOMEMAKER AND WORKED AS A CRAWFORD COUNTY DEPUTY ASSESSER FOR EIGHTEEN YEARS. "Frank Clyde Peterson, 85, of Carthage Missouri, passed away into the loving arms of his Savior on Sunday, November 19, 2023 while surrounded by his family and the Lord. Born on May 8,1938 in Laurens, Iowa, he was the youngest of two children born to Gretchen and Clyde Peterson. Frank is survived by his older sister, Ardis Gustafson of Phoenix, Arizona, with whom he held a cherished relationship that lasted his entire life. The two siblings had a standing phone call that was a priority for them each on the first Saturday of the month. Frank graduated from Laurens high school in 1956 then attended college in Ames, Iowa and Devry technical school in Chicago, Illinois with a focus on engineering. Frank's career path took him and his family on many adventures around the nation. Frank's first and most loved job of his forty-five year career in research and development was with Sandia corporation. From this experience, Frank shared his four most important life lessons, both professionally and personally. Optimism in all aspects of your life Enthusiasm in your business dealings as well as your personal activities Initiative to take ownership of the responsibilities that have been assigned to you and/or you have agreed to Stick-to-it-tive-ness. . . do not quit, do not look back, do not slow down; look and go forward According to Frank, these four attributes will guide one to success. While working and building his family, Frank moved from North to South, then West and East. In 1977, Frank met the love of his life, Dianna, with whom he spent forty-six years of his life; the love affair between Frank and Dianna is one seen in the movies. On an unsuspecting day in March destiny brought the two together and devotion kept them together until the moment Frank took his last breath. The adoration Frank held for Dianna is beyond words. In their life together, the two had countless triumphs and challenges which they surmounted through their devotion to each other and to God. Frank held his role as leader of the family with pride and devotion throughout his life. Frank's children described his influence and fatherly love in the following words: "He was a teacher and a leader who taught us to make decisions and stick by them with integrity and faith in the same ways that he lived. " "His love was as pure as the smile on his face. He showed me how to give and receive love, with abundance". "He was a man of wisdom, integrity and honesty. He would never compromise the truth and, if he made a mistake, he would own and correct it". Frank and Dianna's love affair not only involved seven children, but also sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Frank's grandchildren remember him as a stern man with loving arms; a dedicated and detail oriented role model; a passionate person with a strong work ethic; a devout family man with an infectious smile; a religiously dedicated man always willing to lend an outstretched hand. Frank was a cherished husband, father, grandfather and brother. After forty-six years of marriage and devotion to his family and Christ, we are honored to agree with the Lord in saying, "Well done, good and faithful servant. " Frank was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Peterson, and his mother, Gretchen Peterson. He is survived by his beloved wife Dianna; five sons: Bruce, Mike and wife Karen, Mark and wife Linda, Frank Jr and wife Cathy, Dusty Sampson and wife Ila; two daughters, Heather Sampson and Ardis Lo; and cherished sister, Ardis Gustafson. A memorial service to celebrate Frank's life will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023 at 10:30 am at Cornerstone Revival Center located at 220 W Main Street in Carterville, MO with Morris Cleveland (Frank's brother in law) officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday evening November 22 from 6-8pm at the church. Following the memorial service will be a graveside burial at Old Pleasant View Cemetery in Weir, Kansas. "A local farmer\u0027s wife and mother has gone to join her family in heaven. They will surely be waiting for her at the Gate of Heaven. Margaret Mae Naomi (McGown) McColm, 87, passed away suddenly Tuesday evening, October 17, at her farm home in rural Columbus with her loving and faithful companion, Suzie, by her side. She had finished her chores for the day, had supper with her daughter, Athena McColm, sat down for the evening and unexpectedly passed away. Margaret was the fifth daughter of seven girls, born to John and Florence McGown. She was born on August 20,1936 in their farm home north of McCune, Kansas. Margaret worked on the farm, completing her chores before walking to Green Elm School (a one-room schoolhouse). This included a time when she was taught by an older sister. In 1954, she graduated from McCune Rural High School. She also attended Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg, Kansas. On Easter Sunday, April 1,1956 she married Charles L. McColm in the United Chapel Church, of rural McCune, Kansas. Two daughters, Athena and Anita, were born to this union. In 1957, Margaret and her family moved to Columbus. She was a stay at home mother until her girls were school age. She then began working for USD #493 as a bus driver. She drove the school bus for 42 years. With the hours of driving a bus, she could also work on the farm. She was currently a member of the Columbus First United Methodist Church, Retired School Personnel of Cherokee County, Old Iron Club in Fredonia, lifetime member of Miners Hall Museum in Franklin and American Legion Auxiliary of Erie. She along with her husband were charter and founding members of the Columbus Saddle Club. She served as project leader for several different 4-H projects and coached girls and women softball teams in Columbus. She helped with crafts at Vacation Bible School and for second graders, in her daughter\u0027s classroom. Margaret and Athena were named Citizens of the Decade 2011 to 2018 for Columbus with the work they did in making the Veterans Memorial a reality. Margaret and Charles put on antique tractor pulls and for over 28 years put on kiddie tractor pulls at county fairs in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma with the miniature sled they designed and built. Margaret and Athena have exhibited pedal tractors and implements at local fall festivals. They recently showed at the Columbus Days Festival. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Anita McColm and three sisters, Betty Zimmerman, Dorothy Zimmerman, and six week old Kathleen McGown. She is survived by daughter, Athena McColm, Columbus, her precious dog, Suzie, and three sisters, Patty Mustard, Oak Point, Texas, Helen McDonald, San Tan Valley, Arizona, Marietta Munding, Parsons, Kansas along with several nieces, nephews, and many longtime friends. A celebration of life will be conducted Monday, October 23 at 10:30 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus. Pastor Dorcia Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow the service at the Park Cemetery in Columbus. Those serving as pallbearers will be Jake Cain, Roger Forth, Harry Mitchell, Bub Tate, Steven Zimmerman, and Vernie Zook. Janice was born September 3, 1949 in Pittsburg, KS the daughter of John W. and Elizabeth J. (Vena) Lamb. She attended St. Mary's Grade School, St. Mary's Colgan and later graduated from Pittsburg High School. Janice was of the Christian Faith; she loved to high dive and swim in her early years. Survivors include her brother Curtis John Lamb and friend Debra Aubrey of Ottawa, KS. Janice was preceded in death by her parents. Wilma Vanbeber

"Wilma "Jean" (Augustus) VanBeber passed away on September 14, 2023. She was 95 years old. Jean was the daughter of Don and Goldie Augustus and was raised on a farm near the Brush Creek area of Cherokee County, Kansas. She received her early education in a one-room country schoolhouse and in 1946 graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in Columbus. On July 2, 1949, Jean married Henry VanBeber. Together, they built a home on Cherry Creek Farm near Hallowell and raised their three children, enjoying Saturday night steak dinners and strip pit fishing adventures. In 1972, she and her family moved to Columbus upon the purchase of her beloved home at 510 West Walnut Street where she spent the next 30 years restoring the historic residence to its original charm. She was the perfect hostess, preparing wonderful holiday and birthday dinners in the formal dining room complete with china, crystal, and silver settings. She loved making the home magical for Christmas, starting weeks in advance. Early in her professional life, she worked at the Cherokee County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) office. Later, she served as a Director of the Columbus State Bank, of which her husband Henry was a co-owner. However, she was most recognized in the community for her natural skill as an exceptional seamstress and home decorator, which she used to good advantage to build a successful custom drapery business. Following her retirement, she enjoyed exploring her family genealogy, traveling, and fishing at her cabin at Grand Lake, especially when grandkids visited. Jean was a member of PEO Chapter V, serving as president. A lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Columbus, Jean also served in leadership roles in United Methodist Women. Her faith in God and Christ were unwavering, giving her family much comfort knowing that Jean has received her well-deserved reward. For the 10 years immediately preceding her death, Jean lived in McLean, Virginia with her daughter, Dianne, and family. She was beloved within her adopted community for her beautiful smile and sweet character. Jean will be remembered by her family for instilling in them the qualities of hard work, resilience, education, love of God, forgiveness, and the power of positive thinking, all of which were exemplified by the way she lived her life. Jean was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband and her sister Zelma Kelly. She is survived by her three children Hance (Anne) VanBeber of Arlington, TX, Dianne (Jay Watkins) VanBeber of McLean, VA, and Eric VanBeber of Overland Park, KS, and her grandchildren Claire VanBeber, John Henry VanBeber, and Caroline Watkins of New York, NY, Katie VanBeber and Mimi VanBeber of Lawrence, KS, and nephews Keith Kelley and Kenneth Kelley of Cherokee County, KS. Graveside Services will be 11:00am Saturday September 30, 2023 at the Park Cemetery in Columbus, KS with Pastor Dorcia Johnson officiating. "Leo V. Peak entered into eternal rest in the comfort of his home in Wichita, Kansas on August 22, 2023. Leo was born to James and Edna Ryan Peak on July 22, 1934. Leo married the love of his life, his "little sweetie", Billie Lee Talarico, on September 12, 1953 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Arma, Kansas. Leo attended St. Mary's High School, graduating with the class of 1952. He was one of the football players that started the tradition of singing "Goodnight Irene" to the sisters after winning a football game. Leo loved supporting the Panthers, attending football games for many years. He made many trips to state games, regardless of if he had kids playing or not. Leo was a barber for over 60 years. He held many titles in the state and local unions. Leo was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus. One of Leo's greatest attributes was his ability to answer questions about the people of PIttsburg and country music. He was a walking encyclopedia. Leo loved doing crossword puzzles. He always had a clipboard with puzzles on it. Even with his failing eyesight, he managed to do puzzles with the help of a machine from Envision until a few days before he passed away. Leo was most proud of his role as a father to three children, a Papa to nine grandchildren, and an Old Papa to his 18 great grandchildren and his one great- great grandson. Leo is survived by his wife of 70 years, Billie (Talarico) Peak. He is also survived by his daughter Roxie (Roger) Loewenstsion of Wichita, Kansas and son Ray (Linda) of Pittsburg. Grandchildren Dawn Hardesty, Danna (Mark) Thorne, Melissa (Chris) Crossette, Michelle (Josh) Maes, BJ (Sara) Loewenstein, Ben Peak, Cory (Jena) Peak, Chris (Michelle) Peak, and Matt (Krista) Peak. Great-grandchildren Jeffery Gage Ammerman, Kaden Hardesty, Kyle Crossette, Christian Crossette, Carter Crossette, Peyton Thorne, Zachary Perrault, Ryan Perrault, Katie Loewenstein, Robert "Bob" Loewenstein, Aubree Peak, Ainsley Peak, Sylus Peak, Kolbie Peak, Kase Peak, Kendall Peak, Keaton Peak, and Kelsie Peak. Great-great grandson James Crossette. Leo is survived by two sisters, Angela Patterson and Joan McGeorge both of Pittsburg, sisters-in-law Karen Pryer, Patty (Phil) Whitmore both of Olathe, Kansas and Faye Peak of Pelzer, SC, brothers-in- law Glen Jenkins of Lancaster, CA and Pete Boyd and daughter-in-law Roxanne Walker of PIttsburg. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly, as well as his special buddy Gus and his trusty friend Deuce. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Florence and Bill Talarico, his son Randy Leo Peak, brothers Bill, Joe, and Pat Peak, sisters Margaret (Bernie) Hayden, Gertrude (Dave) Lewis, and Eula Ann Peak, sisters-in-law Maryanne Boyd, Sandy Peak and Beverly Jenkins, brothers-in-law Henry McGeorge and Pat Patterson, nieces Cheryl Sue Hayden and Linda Peak Kent nephews Larry Peak Kelley Hayden and John Lewis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am on Saturday September 2, 2023 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS, with Fr. Joshua Evans as celebrant. James was a self employed painter and lived in the Crawford County area his entire life. He was of the Methodist Faith. "Mary Carol (Schirk) Leabo "Momo" passed away Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on March 11th, 1962 to Louis and Leona (Spielman) Schirk in Pittsburg. She graduated from Pittsburg High School and worked at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center (Later Via Christi) for over 40 years until her retirement in 2021. She married Todd Leabo on September 25th, 1982 in Pittsburg, they divorced after many years of marriage but remained good friends. "Momo" enjoyed spending time with her family, playing games, and seeing her grandchildren grow up; they meant more to her than anything (her bedroom walls were filled with drawings, paintings, and other items from them). She had a great sense of humor and would often prank her family and friends. Survivors include: son Craig (wife Jonnie), daughter Cari (husband Austin); brothers Jim, Bob (wife Terry), and Rick; grandchildren Xyler, Ember, and Maycie; fur grandchildren Dozer and Boone. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition, she is survived by her close friend Dawn, whose children; Robin and Danielle (who preceded her in death) and grandchildren Ayden, Micah, Jason, Rylee, Halleli, and Elijah she loved and considered them her own. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jerry, and her brother Troy.
