"Jeanne Elizabeth Menzie Johnson of Chestertown, MD, passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023, in Easton, MD, after a long battle with dementia. She was 79. Jeanne M. Johnson was born February 16, 1944, in Dubois, PA, to the late William D. Menzie and Ethel Fawcett Menzie. She attended Chatham College from 1962-1964 and received her Bachelor of Arts in History from Dickinson College in 1966. She earned her Master of Library Science in 1969 and her Doctor of Philosophy in Administration in 1978 from the University of Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Pennsylvania/National Association of Secondary School Principals and Elementary School Principals, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and a member of Phi Delta Kappa where she was the Three River Chapter Past President. Locally in Maryland, she was Past President of the Chestertown Garden Club, a Master Gardener, a member of PEO Chapter AL, and a participant in the Kent County School District Teacher Mentorship Program. Jeanne dedicated her life to education serving students and communities in a multitude of capacities from teacher to administrator in western Pennsylvania for more than forty years. She started her career as a Social Studies teacher at Forest Hills Junior High School in the Churchill Area School District. She completed her career in the Quaker Valley School District as a principal of Quaker Valley High School, a Curriculum Coordinator, and the principal of Osborne Elementary School. Jeanne was a strong advocate for her family, students, teachers, and the causes she cared about. She could regularly be found in her garden tending to her flowers or visiting with her sons and grandchildren of whom she was so proud. Jeanne loved traveling down the street and around the world with her husband Bob. She loved life and cherished every minute spent with both friends and family. Jeanne is survived by her husband, Robert L. Johnson of Chestertown, MD; two sons, Todd Johnson and his wife Jennifer Bianco of Alexandria, VA, and Andrew Johnson and his partner Kathryn Rosecrans of Dili, Timor-Leste; beloved grandchildren, Liam and Amelie Johnson of Alexandria, VA; and her siblings, W. David Menzie II and his wife Carolyn of Chestertown, MD, and Anne Wright of Blacksburg, VA. Jeanne is also survived by nieces and nephews, Marcia Parks of Blacksburg, VA, Jacob Johnson of Jeannette, PA, William Menzie III of Amman, Jordan, Allison Kruckow of Blacksburg, VA, Elizabeth Crotty of Brambleton, VA, and James Johnson of Monongahela, PA. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 14 at Fellows, Helfenbein \u0026amp; Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Rd in Chestertown starting at 10 a. m. with a visitation, followed by the celebration and a light luncheon. A reception in celebration of Jeanne will also be held in Pittsburgh, PA, at The Chadwick, 10545 Perry Highway, Wexford, PA, on Wednesday, October 18 from 4-6 p. m. "Lucia Porcher Johnson Rather died on November 8, 2023, age 89, at the Heron Point retirement community in Chestertown, Maryland. She was born on September 12, 1934 to Lucia Lockwood (Porcher) and Cecil Slaton Johnson, a professor of history and later Dean of the General College at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Because women could not enroll there until junior year, Lucia began post-secondary studies at Westhampton College in Richmond, Virginia. She received her BA in History with Highest Honors in 1955 and MS in Library Science in 1957, both from UNC-Chapel Hill. After graduation, Lucia moved to Washington, D. C. for a position at the Library of Congress, where, some years later, she met John Carson Rather, a widower with two young children. They married in 1964 and remained devoted to each other until his death in 2013, at age 93. Son Bruce predeceased them both. Lucia had a distinguished 34-year career at the Library of Congress, notwithstanding progressive hearing loss that began in her youth. After serving as a cataloguer, reference librarian, bibliographer, and systems analyst, she joined a three-person leadership team that ushered in a world-wide revolution in library automation, the MARC [Machine-Readable Catalogue] II Format (1968). In 1976, Lucia was appointed Director for Cataloging, managing some 700 employees and operations in the Library's largest division. For a period during the 1980s, Lucia and two close colleagues traded multiple turns as Acting Deputy Librarian of Congress; their handwritten office nameplate, an increasingly cramped list with each name successively crossed out for the next, survives in genial testament to their sense of perspective. As a longtime member and then president of the International Federation of Libraries Association, Lucia traveled the globe. Her professional leadership and impact were acknowledged by the Margaret Mann (1985) and Melvil Dewey (1991) awards from the American Library Association, a Distinguished Service Award from the Library of Congress, and a Distinguished Alumnus award from the University of North Carolina School of Library and Information Science. In 1989, Lucia looked back on her career in an interview for the Columbia Center for Oral History, Columbia University Libraries, leavening the technical subject matter with humorous anecdotes, obvious modesty and professional generosity, and the soft southern accent that never left her. https://dlc. library. columbia. edu/catalog/cul:866t1g1mng At her professional peak, Lucia decided to seek a Ph. D. in history - fulfilling a dream set aside in the 1950s, when women faced barriers in academia. She was admitted to George Washington University, which, in consideration of her demanding job, allowed her to take just one class per semester, making the normal two years of doctoral coursework into an uncommonly long haul. Research for her dissertation on the Suez crisis, however, would have been impossible without extended time in British archives. Lucia embraced the enticing prospect of life in London with John by retiring from the Library of Congress in 1991. (For well over a decade afterward, she volunteered in its Prints and Photographs Division, cataloguing political cartoons. ) She received her doctorate from GWU in 1994. In 2004, Lucia and John moved to Heron Point, where she built strong friendships and led an active and fulfilled life. She chaired its Long-Range Planning Committee and served on the Board of Directors during the transition to ACTS management. As head of the Heron Point library committee, Lucia firmly advocated for preserving library satellite locations and the main library's integrity as a space for books and reading, making a quiet financial commitment in support of renovations. Locally, she was active in the League of Women Voters and taught thirteen history courses for the Washington College Academy of Lifelong Learning, earning its "George Award" in 2021. Mere days later, Lucia suffered the stroke that began her distressing cognitive decline. No account of Lucia's life would be complete without acknowledging her deep love for a sequence of Sheltand Sheepdog companions stretching back to childhood. Astonishingly, a photo of her first dog, Panda, remained in her wallet until the end. Lucia also relished European and Caribbean travels with John, collecting and working intricate handmade wooden jigsaw puzzles, politics, reading, and gin martinis straight-up. Lucia is survived by her daughter Susan Rather - for whom she was such a professional role model - and devoted son-in-law Richard Wheelus, of Austin, Texas, and by her adored grandson Robin Wheelus. Nieces Laura and Alexandra McGee, who maintained lifelong relationships with their mother's only sibling, survive her as well, along with their brother Scott. We are deeply grateful to the many caring Heron Point staff members, companion Delores Phillips, and steadfast friend Lindsay Batcheller for the daily attentions that sustained Lucia throughout her difficult final years. "Gail Lee (Dixon) Rawlings of Chestertown, MD passed away on November 7, 2023. She was 78 years old. She was born on December 26, 1944 in Maryland, the daughter of the late Robert Dixon and Lucille Davis Dixon. She graduated from Glen Burnie High School with the class of 1962. On June 30, 1973, she married the late Gary Frank Rawlings, and the two moved to Chestertown. She worked at Campbell's Soup as well as with Chester River Home Care \u0026amp; Hospice as an administrator. She was a member of Wesley Chapel Church as well as Hope Fellowship Church, and often hosted bible studies at her home. In her younger years, she enjoyed spending time on the water and boating. She was dedicated to her family, and loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews very deeply. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lyn Shenton. She is survived by her daughters: Dawn Speck of Middletown, DE, Karen Biagiotti of Glen Burnie, MD, Lisa Sayles of Rock Hill, SC, and Tina Klein of Salisbury, MD; brothers, Matthew Dixon, Robert Dixon, and Shawn Dixon; sister, Cindy Bussells; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Monday, November 13 at 1:00 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown. A visitation for family and friends to gather will be held the night prior, Sunday, November 12, from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm as well as an hour prior to the service, from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. Charlotte J. Coleman, 85 of Chestertown, Md passed away on November 4, 2023 at the Resorts at Chester River Manor. Mrs. Coleman was born on August 12, 1938, daughter of the late Leonard S. and Araminta Wallace Voshell. She was raised in Millington. She cleaned houses in the Chestertown area for many years. Charlotte was a life member of American Legion Post 36 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved her grandchildren. Along with her parents she was preceded by 3 brothers Norman, Sam and Clifton Voshell. Charlotte is survived by her children, Fred Beaver, Jr. (Debbie) of Chestertown, MD and Rose Taylor (Donald) of Dover, DE; a brother, William Voshell (Peg) of Millington, MD; 4 grandchildren, Carrie Johnson (Billy) , Tonya Paras (Tony), Jennifer Toston (Corey) and John Haines (Pat); 9 great grandchildren, JT, William and Erica Johnson, Jesse James, Jasmine, AJ and Michael Paras and Andrew and Emily Toston; sisters in law, Mary Voshell of Millington and Jackie Harding of TN and many nieces and nephews. . "Geraldine Ann (MacCord) Martin of Chestertown, MD passed away on October 12, 2023 at the age of 69. She was born on February 17, 1954 in Wilmington, DE, the daughter of the late Philip N. and Geraldine Taylor MacCord. She graduated from Ambassador Christian Academy in Richwood, NJ with the class of 1973. After graduating, she worked at several daycare facilities before eventually becoming a private home healthcare provider later in life. She married Donald Martin in 1988 and resided in New Castle, DE and then in Middletown, DE for the last 20 years. She enjoyed playing video games, collecting stuffed bears, and her coffee. She was a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Brian James MacCord; three brothers: Philip, Timothy, and Kevin MacCord; and one sister, Sandra Stewart. She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Ann Martin and Stephanie Marie Martin, both of Dover, DE; sisters, Sharon Reusch (Richard) of New Castle, DE and Linda Scullion of Newark, DE; brothers, Gregory Wayne MacCord of Wilmington, DE and Jeffrey Brian MacCord of Dover, DE; and her four beloved grandchildren, Jailynn Martin, Cherish Milborne, Skylen Martin, and Colby Martin. "Daniel F. Frey of Chestertown, MD passed away after a long battle with illness on October 7, 2023. He was 63 years old. Daniel was born in Baltimore, MD on January 17, 1960 to Ellen Virginia and David F. Frey. He grew up in Catonsville, MD, where he graduated with the Catonsville High School class of 1979. He then began work as a brick mason with Buck Resch, and then with Anytime Electrical with Glenn Miller, and finally AZZ Electrical. He also worked for himself as a handyman. Everyone knew him from the annual 4th of July Barbeque he hosted at his home in Catonsville, Maryland. It was a fun event, with friends and family coming from all over to enjoy the food, music, and company before walking to the high school to watch the fireworks together. He loved fishing. If he wasn\u0027t at work, you could find him out fishing. He would often go fishing with his friends or family, and he always looked forward to the challenge of catching a big fish. He also enjoyed the peace and quiet of being out on the water, and he found fishing to be a very relaxing activity. He was a kind and generous man, and he was always willing to help out his friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Zepp; his mother, Ellen Virginia Frey; and his brother, Douglas Mason. He is survived by his father, David F. Frey; sister, Virginia Cook (Charles); nephews, Rick Boothe (Stacey) and Nick Boothe; nieces, Jolene Gonzales (Chris) and Katy Frey; as well as many other great and great-great nieces and nephews. Edward Callahan Jr

Age - 77

"Edward "Trippe" Callahan, Jr. , 77, of Ruthsburg, MD, passed away on September 25, 2023, at his residence. Born on September 10, 1946, in Chestertown, MD, to the late Edward Trippe Callahan Sr, and Sarah Pauline Coleman. Trippe graduated from Centreville High School and went on to Georgetown University to graduate from the School of Foreign Service. He became an epidemiologist for the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, in Wilmington NC. Later he returned to school to become an attorney, studying at the University of Maryland School of Law. Back home, Trippe worked helping his father at the farm, and practiced law in Centreville with John Clark for a period of six years. At that time decided that full time farming was his call. He bought the home farm from his father and settled to work in his beloved land. Trippe got involved in many organizations. He contributed tirelessly to many causes, ranging from farming, Our Mother of Sorrows Church, human rights, equality rights, and environmental and conservation efforts. Working to defend Ruthsburg was first and forefront in his agenda during those difficult times. He also pioneered renewable energy sources for his farm, and many others. He advocated consistently for the less privileged, he gave his time to help the community, the neighbors, and the causes dear to him. He was a superb debater and knowledgeable thinker. He thought globally. An avid reader, Trippe belonged to Florence DeNagy's book club in Denton, Caroline Co, for 38 years. After retirement joined another book club in Centreville. He never had enough books, New Yorker magazines or reading material on hand. He would order a few more every week. Farming was demanding and Trippe worked from dawn to dusk, but he found rainy days, or 4 am, the best time to catch up. He had great memories of his stay at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University in Cambridge, U. K. , while taking a writer's course. Trippe married Blanca 31 years ago and started a family. Then he belonged to two worlds. Trippe was very passionate about music and enjoyed all genres. His LP, cassette and CD collections attest to that passion. He loved to go to the Avalon Theatre during The Met opera season and watch each and every opera played live from NY City. He delighted in going to Bob Dylan concerts and cherished Lyle Lovett's, Nancy Griffith's, and John Gorka's music. Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, and others were favorites as well. He enjoyed watching his DVRs about philosophy courses, and his DVDs of Rumpole of the Bailey until his last days. Trippe also enjoyed reunions with his Centreville High School classmates, and met at least once a year with his law school classmates where they loved to reminisce on their shared years. Trippe was a wonderful husband and father, a volunteer, a blood donor, a good solid friend, a kind, gentle and humble soul, and an independent thinker. He extended his kindness and generosity to all alike. He was adopted by his in-laws in Uruguay, where he spent time every year at the family farm. He ended up purchasing the home farm down in Uruguay and helped his wife to grow beef cattle there. Trippe loved to back up all initiatives, enjoyed the successes and suffered the droughts as well down there. Trippe had a life without a spare minute. It was rich, full, and well lived. Sharing life with Trippe was a privilege, learning from him a blessing. He taught us in his own quiet way tolerance towards others, commitment and forgiveness. God bless Trippe in his eternal life. We are grateful to him. Love is eternal. Trippe is survived by his wife, Blanca Callahan, his sons, Trippe Augustus and Alexander Callahan, and his mother-in-law, Blanca Mayero de Rusinol. Abram S. Zeiset, 91, of Chestertown, MD went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 25, 2023. He was the husband of Sara E. (Martin) Zeiset for 68 years. Born July 25, 1932, Abe was the son of the late Martin M. and Martha M. (Sensenig) Zeiset. Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Eric, husband of Connie of Chestertown, MD; three grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by siblings Emma (Zeiset) Ranck and Katie (Zeiset) Good. Abe started farming in Weaverland, then in Elizabethtown with his son, and later in Chestertown, MD with son and grandson. He was a Lancaster County Farm Bureau Board member and an award recipient for his soil conservation work. He attended Calvary Church, Lancaster and was a founding member of Christian Fellowship Church, New Holland, PA and LCBC Church, Manheim, PA and served on the board of Lancaster Bible College. In his early years he was a member of Weaverland Mennonite Church. He found joy in his faith, family, and farming. On Thursday, Aug. 31, greet the family at 1:00 pm with a memorial service following at 2:00 pm at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Rd. , Lancaster, PA. Interment will be private for family.
