HENRIETTA MOYER was born January 20, 1921 in Churchville, MD to Henry C. and Bessie Pouska, who were immigrants from Czechoslovakia. Her parents ran a feed mill on Calvary Road . She was joined by a sister Bessie who died at a young age of pneumonia, and later by brothers Jerome and Henry Jr. and sister Mildred . She attended high school in Bel Air, MD, and graduated as a senior in the 11th grade which was a usual practice in those days. In the 1940's she worked as a secretary, rooming with Mrs. Franzl during the week and returning home on the weekends. Her brother, Jerome did this for her often. By that time the family had moved to the Eastern Shore near The Bohemia River, after the feed mill was burned down. Her parents started a big dairy operation as well as other related farm work. Her brothers were glad when they were able to leave home because they were tired of milking cows. Mildred also did lots of farm chores, and left to be a secretary in the late 1940's. She met and married Robert Moyer, from central Pennsylvania, in 1949. They resided in the Catonsville area, finally purchasing her current home off of Old Frederick Road. Henrietta and Bob tried their hand at several ventures, including a frozen custard stand near Elkton, MD. He obtained a job at Westinghouse, where he stayed until retirement. She was a busy homemaker and very active in the Methodist Church. She was known as a good cook and was always buying yet another cookbook. She made wonderful dishes for the church potlucks. She was also a skilled seamstress. She and Bob would go to the fabric mills in Pennsylvania , and buy fabric to make clothing to sell. RVing and touring the country was a favorite pastime. She and Bob visited all over the US, including Yellowstone National Park in California and many places in Florida. Her parents sold the dairy farm in 1957 and bought a chicken farm in Masaryktown, FL. . This gave them the opportunity to visit so many places like Silver Springs, Daytona Beach and Cypress Gardens before they became major tourist attractions. With air conditioning was rare in those days, they eventually bought a second home in central Florida and promptly became snowbirds. Henrietta became a widow in 1994, but this did not deter her from going to Florida every year. She often had Millie drive her down there. She became best friends with Melba Slates there and their friendship continued until Melba passed away this past year. Henrietta and Millie visited Millie's nieces, Cammie (Vrzalik) Hugunin and Marie(Vrzalik) Hillberry in Idaho and Montana many summers between 1998 and 2010. They were taken many places to sightsee in the Rocky Mountain area. They were both interested in seeing a lot of historical areas- like Virginia City, MT and the Salmon River country. Both enjoyed the small town life in the Rockies. As Henrietta aged gracefully into her 90's, she did slow down just a bit. In 2019, she sustained a series of falls that landed her in various Emergency rooms. None real bad, but it did put a cramp in her style. She was blessed to have wonderful church friends, especially Bobbie Bien, and her neighbors like Heather, who really looked out for her. She tried to manage at home-she was VERY independent, but eventually she was "coaxed" into going to Encore Assisted Living when she just really could not manage on her own. She had a lovely celebration for her 100th Birthday there. Heather would bring her her favorite candy- M&M's. Bobbi was awesome in making sure Henrietta always had what she needed- from a new phone to her favorite clothes from home. When called and asked how she was, she would always answer "I'm hanging in there". Well, she did just that until she was 102 and was able pass away peacefully. She was of clear mind until the day she died. She was a lovely and intelligent lady, full of wit and humor, and will be missed by her friends and family.Show more
