Howard Stump

Howard Stump

Age - 88

November 19, 2023

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Howard B. Stump, of Smyrna, DE on November 17, 2023 at 88 years of age. Howard was born in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Alfred Nervin Stump and Nellie Aston Riday Stump. A plumber by trade, he worked alongside his father and brother after he graduated from Sharon Hill High School in 1954. When he was 24 years old, Howard met and married a single mother, Catherine, and became a father of four children instantly. Over the next six years, he and Cass added two more kids and raised their blended family in Folcroft PA. In 1969, the whole family moved to Smyrna DE when Howard and his brother started A&H Plumbing & Heating. A&H became a successful family business for over 40 years, until his retirement. Howard relished being the patriarch of a large family, and "Pop" to a large extended clan. When the kids grew up, instead of sizing down, they bought a farm in Clayton and sized up. He built a big farmhouse to encourage everyone to visit, and it was always full of family and friends. He and Cass bred and showed Morgan horses under the banner Heatherstone Morgans, in which the family was heavily involved. In recent years, he moved back to town, where he enjoyed getting out and chatting with golfers on the 16th hole at Garrisons Lake. He followed his Philly sports teams faithfully and enjoyed hosting celebrations at his house. Howard was known for his kindness, his generosity, his loyalty, and his big heart. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Catherine, to whom he was married for 57 years. His unassuming and friendly nature endeared him to a large circle of friends and family, who will miss his affable smile. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine M. Stump; his son, Howard R. Stump; his granddaughter, Lisa A. Mullaney; his parents, Alfred and Nellie Stump; sister, Jean Riley; brother, Al Stump; and brother, Charles Stump. He is survived by his children James W. Mullaney (Rita), Timothy P. Mullaney, Sr. (Renie), Kathleen Mullaney (Tom Witkowski), William Mullaney and Kimberly Stump (Ken Hausman); 11 grandchildren, J. Michael Mullaney (Jennifer), Joseph Mullaney (Sanh), Lynn Burke (Matt), Shannon Coble (Chris), Timothy P. Mullaney, Jr. (Kristen), Brian Cote (Lis), Melissa Young, Scott Bundek (Cheryl), Amanda Bundek, Jacob Hausman and Katie Hausman; his sister, Ruthanne Stump; and 22 great-grandchildren. A public viewing will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 10 AM to 11:00 AM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM, and burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Smyrna.Show more
